The Candidates on Gay Rights

Same candidates, different issue.

Hillary:
Supports civil unions with full equality of benefits and thinks that the states should decide on the gay marriage issue - not the federal government.

Voted in June 2002 to add of sexual orientation to hate crimes legislation.

Although I agree that these type of issues should be left to the states, I do not agree that sexual orientation should be included in hate crimes legislation.

Obama:

Opposes gay marriage but supports civil unions and health benefits for gay civil partners. Also believes that decisions about gay marriage should be left to the states.
Voted against constitutional ban of same-sex marriage in June 2006.

McCain:

Thinks the gay marriage issue should be left to the states.
Voted in June 2002 in opposition of adding sexual orientation to hate crimes legislation and voted in June 2006 against the constitutional ban of same-sex marriage.
