Top 3 Films: Tom Hanks

Happy 54th Tom!

Wow, this guy has a plethora of work to choose from!

A League of Their Own (1992)

This Penny Marshall directed film is a fictional movie based loosely on real events.
Tom Hanks plays Jimmy Dugan, the manager of the Rockford Peaches. He is amazing in this role. I actually would have liked to have seen a prequel to this film focused more on his character.
Good cast in this film too. Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Jon Lovitz, Bill Pullman....the list goes on.
One of the greatest movie quotes of all time is in this film and it is a Tom Hanks line:
"Are you crying? There's no crying! There's no crying in baseball!"

The Green Mile (1999)

Based on a novel by Stephen King this film is about corrections officer Paul Edgecomb, played by Hanks, and his life on Death Row.
It also stars James Cromwell as the warden and Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey.
It was nominated for Best Picture in 1999 but lost to American Beauty (I liked Green Mile better).

Cast Away (2000)

Hanks plays FedEx employee Chuck Noland who ends up on a deserted island. It was directed by Robert Zemeckis (who also directed the Back To The Future movies and Forrest Gump) and also stars Helen Hunt.
Aside from Hanks, the actor that stole the movie was the volleyball...just kidding.
Hanks was nominated for Best Actor Oscar for this film but was beaten by Russell Crowe in Gladiator....meh.
He did, however, win the award for Best Actor in a Drama at the Golden Globe Awards.

Here is a partial list of some other great films he made that did not make the Top 3 cut:

Splash, Bachelor Party, Dragnet, Big, Joe Versus the Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump (which almost made the cut), Apollo 13, Toy Story, That Thing You Do, Saving Private Ryan, You've Got Mail, Toy Story 2, Road to Perdition, Catch Me If You Can (also almost made the cut), The Terminal and Toy Story 3.
