Quote of the Day

"The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments in a courthouse:
You cannot post
'Thou shalt not steal,'
'Thou shalt not commit adultery,' and
'Thou shalt not lie' in a building full of lawyers, judges, and politicians.
It creates a hostile work environment."

Not Always Right (April 29)

(The Customer Is) Not Always Right is a website that I frequent. It contains funny (and sadly actual) stories from people that work in some way, shape or form in the customer service industry about some of their more interesting encounters with the people that are paid to serve.

I am going to start a new installment here on Otter Limits where I will post my favorite one of the day (keep in mind this will probably not actually be a daily installment due to the fact that I don't always blog or don't always remember to blog every day). Anyway, I thought you might enjoy this one:

Ask Her to Close All Windows Next (from a tech support rep in South Carolina)

Me: “Can you get online?”

Customer: “How do you do that?”

Me: “Do you see Internet Explorer?”

Customer: “Where do I see that?”

Me: “It should be on your desktop.”

Customer: *rustling papers* “I don’t see it on my desk anywhere. Are you sure it is here?”

Top 3 Films: Robert Downey Jr

I have not done one of these in a while so I figured now is as good a time as any to return to this old installment.

These are the 3 films that I consider to be Robert Downey Jr's best (in chronological order).

Chaplin

Released in 1992, Downy plays the title role. Downey won an Oscar for Best Actor in this film. He also received a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama and a BAFTA Award for Best Actor as well.

Iron Man

In this great superhero-film, Downey plays (again) the title role of Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Sherlock Holmes

Downey plays the title role in this one as well alongside Jude Law as Dr. Watson. Downey won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy for his performance in this one.

Coming Soon to a Theater Near You

Keep in mind that there are pleeenty of other movies that are coming out and that these are just the ones that caught my eye.

APRIL

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Remake of the Wes Craven classic horror movie. I am not sure that I will see in the theater but I definitely am interested in seeing it just to see what they do to re-boot this franchise.

Clash of the Titans
Another remake however from what I have read about it has little to do with the original movie from the 1980s. I've seen previews of it though. Looks like it might be worth a view.

MAY

Iron Man
Definitely gotta see this one in the theater. My only gripe about the movie from what I've read about it is the producers replacing Terrance Howard as Rhodey with Don Cheadle. Not a slam against Cheadle but I think Howard made a perfect Rhodey.

Robin Hood
Not sure how many movies have been made from this story but I'm sure it numbers in the hundreds. Still, I like the story and would not mind seeing another Hollywood version. This one stars Russell Crowe as the lead character and Ridley Scott directs. Can't go wrong with that duo.

Shrek Forever After
It's Shrek. C'mon.

JUNE

The A-Team.
They're updating this great TV show by making the crew veterans of the Iraq War instead of the Vietnam War. Might be worth a viewing.

Toy Story 3.
Ahh yeah! I know my boy is excited about it.

NOVEMBER(yeah, July through October just didn't seem appealing)

Red Dawn
Re-make of the early 80s classic has the United States being invaded by Russian and Chinese armies.

DECEMBER

Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
I've seen the first two. I liked them both. Might as well check this one out too.

Tron Legacy
Sequel to a movie that I never thought there would be a sequel to. I have to see it just to figure out why they would bother. Interestingly enough, Jeff Bridges is returning for this movie.

Yogi Bear
Really? This should be interesting.

JANUARY

The Green Hornet
Was never really a big fan of this comic book but I gotta check it out just because it is a comic book movie.

Decided to go with some fiction for a little while (although it's actually not the only book I'm working on right now). I saw the movie Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr last night and got interested in the story realizing I had never read any actual Sherlock Holmes stories so I went to the library and picked this one up.

Illegal Crimes?

Okay, let me get this straight...

Arizona passes a law which states that anyone living in the United States illegally is committing a crime and the federal government wants to challenge it?

Okay, first of all doesn't it seem a little redundant to pass a law saying that doing something illegal is a crime?

Isn't that what a crime is? Something illegal?!?

But on top of the redundancy of a state having to pass a law saying something illegal is a crime, the federal government wants to come in and say that they can't pass that law?

What in the hell is going on in the White House? And in Congress?

Are these people really THAT flipping stupid? Have they not looked at a dictionary lately? Do they not know what ILLEGAL means?!?

Here, let me help our elected officials who obviously like any sort of common sense:
Illegal (adjective). Forbidden by law or statute. (This is from the Random House Dictionary 2010)
And if that isn't simple enough, let's go to another definition:

Illegal alien (noun). A foreigner who has entered or resides in a country UNLAWFULLY.

Guess what? I'm going to let you in on an obviously little known secret. If you are residing in this country, you ARE committing a crime!!!

Our federal government has reached a new level of stupidity.

I finished the book on the Church Fathers by Pope Benny and now I'm about to embark on this one. Probably one of the few books you will ever find that is written by the Pope and has pictures in it.

Here is a quote from the author that is on the back cover:

"The Church was built on the foundation of the Apostles as a community of faith, hope and charity. Through the Apostles, we come to Jesus Himself."
I am really starting to like reading his stuff.

Quote of the Day Part Duo

“We Have received the faith to give it to others. We are priests meant to
service others. And we must bring a fruit that will remain. All people want
to leave a mark which lasts. But what remains? Money does not. Building do
not, nor books. After a certain amount of time, whether long or short, all
these things disappear. The only thing which remains forever is the human
soul, the human person created by God for eternity. The fruit which remains
then is that which we have sowed in human souls: love, knowledge, a gesture
capable of touching the heart, words which open the soul to the joy in the
Lord. Let us then go to the Lord and pray to Him, so that He may help us
bear fruit which remains. Only in this way will the earth be changed from a
valley of tears to a garden of God.”
- - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI)

Duo, by the way, for those that don't know, is the Latin word for Two (I've been trying to learn some Latin lately).

Quote of the Day

"The fact is when politics are used to bring redemption, they promise too much. When they promise to do God's work, they become not divine but diabolical."

I decided to put down that last book (The Essential Pope Benedict) and try it again another time. It really is a hard read for me.

This one, however, so far, has been a pretty easy read. I think that perhaps Pope Benedict had a different audience in mind when he wrote this one.

This book is basically a collection of short biographies of the men we call the Apostolic Fathers. The Apostolic Fathers, if you don't know who they were, were Christians from the 1st and 2nd centuries that were either taught directly by the Apostles or by the men that were taught by the Apostles. These are the men from whom most of the Catholic "traditions" come from.

Anyway, so far it's a good book and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in early Church history.

Although when you look at him, he might remind you a bit of the Emperor from Star Wars, the guy is really intelligence and his writing shows it. I have read some other stuff from him and I really like what I have read...well, what I have been able to understand anyway. Seriously, the guy is really intelligent and most of the time does not write for an idiot audience like myself.

This book is a selection of his homilies, interviews, essays, articles, etc. that have to do with the Catholic faith.

Do Catholics Worship Mary and the Saints?

Worshipping the Saints. Many Protestant Christians believe that Catholics are heathens because they "worship" Mary and the Saints.

What they do not understand is that the word 'worship' simple means showing respect or honor. It does not mean that if I worship something I am worshipping it as a god. It just means I am giving it its proper honor.

There are 2 types of worship though. There is the Greek word latria, which refers to the honor given to God alone and there is the Greek word dulia, which refers to the honor given to human beings.

The problem is that most Protestant Christians do not understand the difference between these 2 words and lump both the worship of God and the worship of Mary and the Saints into one category, incorrectly.

The truth is, in the sense of the word worship that comes to most people's mind, Catholics do NOT worship Mary and the Saints. They worship God and God alone.

Catholics do not worship Mary. They do not worship Saints. They do not worship statues (in fact they don't even honor statues since statues are just slabs of rock).

Another misconception by Protestant Christians (most of them anyway) about Catholics is that praying to Mary and the Saints denotes worship. This is simply not true.

Since the earliest history of Christianity, Christians asked for intercession from their departed brothers and sisters. The Bible does state that there is only one God and only one mediator between Him and man, however this pertains the fact that Jesus is the only person that is both God and man and the only person that bridges man and God. It does not mean that Jesus is the only person that can intercede for us. That would not make any sense, how can God intercede for us to God? Make sense?

Interestingly enough, the Old Testament actually has an example of man praying to those in heaven on our behalf.
Psalm 103 states: "Bless the Lord, O you His angels, you mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word."

And Psalm 148 states: "Praise the Lord.....Praise Him, all His angels, praise Him, all His host."

Was the writer of these psalms worshipping angels? Certainly not.

The point I am making with these passages is that those who are in heaven pray with us and pray for us.

The question I have always wondered about those who attack the Catholics for praying to Saints is how is that any different from these people going to cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and talking to them as if they can hear them? In my opinion, it is no different at all.

The point I am making with this post is:

1. Do Catholics worship Mary and the Saints?
The answer is two-fold. First, depends on your definition of worship. If you are talking about giving someone their due respect or honor. Yes they do. But if you are talking about worshipping them on the same level as God. Absolutely not.

2. Is it wrong for Catholics to pray to Mary and the Saints?
It is no more wrong for them to pray for their intercession than it is for a person to talk to their departed loved ones.

Season to Risk Interview

This is an interview that I conducted with a band called Season To Risk a really long time ago. I can't even remember when I did this one. Maybe Dave remembers?

Season to Risk started their debauchery a little over a decade ago in the seedy underbelly of what is the Kansas City underground. At their show on March 18th @ the Green Door in Oklahoma City I got a chance to sit with the guys for a couple of minutes and discussed life, music and what's in store for the S2R Army in the future.

--Steve Long

How long have you been together? When did the band get started?

We got together in the fall of '89. You do the math. I always get it wrong. Of the original members only Duane Trower and I, Steve Tulipana, still exist. We have had four bass players and ten drummers. The current rhythm section is Billy Smith (bass) and Chris Metcalfe (drums). We recently added a second guitarist, Wade Williamson to round out the sound of the new album.

Where did the name SEASON TO RISK come from?

Season to Risk was the title of one of our songs. We had our first show coming up and couldn't decide on a name so we went through all the titles of the first batch of songs. It [Season to Risk] was a song about how your life can take immediate changes when someone leaves or dies. Your whole world is upside down and instead of wallowing in it you have to step outside your personal definition of what you are. We actually tried to change the name when we got signed. We wanted something simpler and easier to remember. Could not come up with anything, so Season to Risk stuck.

How did you get started in music? Were any of you in other bands prior to forming S2R?

We all have played in numerous bands prior to s2r and throughout its history we have all had side projects.

What side projects are those?

Well, Shiner is basically a full time side-project for all ex-members of Season to Risk. That's a joke, kind of. Duane had made an album with a band called Quitter's Club that just smokes. Very bizarre math/art. They did an awesome cover of the Swans' Half Life. Billy and Wade are together in a band called Dirt Nap that basically wrote the book for Shiner. Wade also plays in an awesome band called Stella Link that you should be hearing more of soon. I have a punk/porno rock band called the Pornhuskers (I play bass) very fun with fire breathing dominatrix dancer girls. All four of us have a live electronic band called The Tang! Trials that also includes a member of The Get-Up Kids. And Duane and I played in a hard-core cover band called Grand Punk Railroad--all Black Flag/Cro-Mags/Flipper, etc.

What are your influences, what bands or artists made you decide that you wanted to get into a band? Or were there any other ulterior motives that made you want to get involved in music?

All of us got involved in punk rock way back in high school. All pretty much self-taught. Duane did study some theory in college. I think it really just came out of boredom and a desire to create and perform. Punk rock told us that anyone could do it. So we did it. Now, I realize the Season to Risk sound isn't your everyday punk rock but the DIY attitude has always been one of our tenants. Bands like Scratch Acid, Bad Brains, Big Black, Sonic Youth, Black Flag, even early Soundgarden showed us that there were no boundaries to punk rock and the goal was to make your own sound. Be as creative and original as possible.

What is the first record you can remember buying?

Queen's The Game.

What bands are you listening to now? Are there any that you would recommend?

Every one of us in the band has different tastes. Wade and Billy have been raving about Cornelius. I love Gang of Four and have been listening to a lot of Brian Eno lately. As far as new stuff, oh my god Out of Chicago blew me away recently. I have been listening to that one a lot.

Have you ever heard anyone compare your band to Big Black?

Yes.

Would you ever consider having Steve Albini record one of your albums/Have you ever approached him about that?

David (who played drums on the last two albums) has worked with Albini and we have mulled it over a few times but it seemed like too obvious of a choice. I love his stuff but we also were way stoked with Jason Livermore at The Blasting Room who did the Shattering w/ Bill Stevenson helping. Awesome experience.

So how did you guys hook up with Bill Stevenson and Owned and Operated Records?

Years ago Duane booked All here on their first tour and we become acquainted. This was when Dave Smalley was the singer. Chad, their current singer has been with them for quite sometime is originally from Kansas City. He turned Bill and the rest on to our first album and we have done several tours together. They actually offered to put our third record out but we had already committed to Thick. When this opportunity arrived to leave Thick we thought it made sense to go to O&O.

What was the experience like with Columbia records? Would you mind going over a few of the details surrounding the split with them? Would you ever consider signing with a major label again?

It was somewhat of a fluke signing to Columbia. We had signed on with Red Decibel, an independent out of Minneapolis. While we were recording our first record for them in Chicago, Red Decibel made a "development deal" with Columbia. Red Decibel was to run all their new projects by Columbia a&r and they in turn would release at least 3 projects per year, or something like that. They came to check us out at the studio and signed us before we had even put anything out. We were stoked but taken aback and were very weary of not "selling out." There were some great people there at Sony/Columbia and some bullshit artists just like anywhere in life. They promised us they were in for the long haul. That we were an inexpensive band with tons of future potential and that they would stick behind our artistic integrity and grow with us. I can't remember which a&r person it was. Hell, it could have been Donny Einer (president at the time) to tell you the truth. He even went on to mention how Aerosmith started out small and grew into what it is today. I add, what a giant heaping pile of overproduced shit. Anyway, they dropped us, as well as a ton of other bands, after the complete financial shipwreck that was Michael Jackson's history album. Nonetheless, Columbia gave us the opportunity to not have to work day jobs and get out there and tour solid for 9 months out of the year and make somewhat of a name for ourselves that 6 years later we can still tour in a van and make it somewhat worth our while.

What were your best and worst live show experiences?

All live experiences are both. Lots of people/no people (sometimes the no people shows are the best). Blood, broken fingers/broken bottles/broken amps. Lots of drinking, lots of driving, lots of people. So many shows I really couldn't quantify it.

Do you guys all have your personal favorite songs to play live, if so what are they?

I don't think any of us do. We just like to try and keep it fresh and interesting for ourselves which in turn keeps it that way for the audience. Needless to say, because of this, we have given up on some of our best songs. (Mine Eyes, Snakes, Dogs.) It just goes back way too far. We do pull them out from time to time but it really depends on who is drumming for us that week and which songs he knows.

How do you guys write your songs? Is it lyrics first or music first or do you kind of write it all at the same time?

Kind of all at the same time. Riffs come up first then we work together on arrangements. The words generally come last. Phrases make an appearance during arrangements but it usually is sitting down with the finished project before the really materialize.

The new album, The Shattering, how would you compare this album to your others?

It slays them all. We are incredibly happy with this one. Production is awesome. You can hear the vocals. It has low-end but isn't woofy. All around really stoked.

What is the story behind the band member's nicknames on The Shattering?

To amuse ourselves. We had an underlying theme/story to The Shattering. It isn't really obvious unless it is pointed out. The idea is that there is a cult headed by an over-educated, over-read paranoiac. He is called the filter because he takes all the information he culls from books/tv/religion/conspiracy/philosophy/science/etc. and edits it to make his own plan. Which is really what we all do, no? Anyway, he filters the information and disseminates it to the followers. The concept of The Shattering is taken from the ideas of the kabbalah. Original light/energy separating into many facets, thus shattering out into life. But also, in there, there is a convoluted concept that it is the sun that all life shattered out from and that the sun is sick as far as human needs go and we soon will be enveloped in its outward motion/shattering. It is all just a false mish-mash of ideas, really. A concept about lunatics and information/dis-information. Enaud is Duane backwards. We always thought it sounded alien backwards. Dvivid is a name David has used as a signature on his art forever. Serpico is proof that Wade is an infiltrator--the new guy, undercover. Read to bring it all down for the glory of whatever alter cause he is fronting aka his other bands. Billy Z came from a joke on the road concerning Billy's cock. Lots of cock jokes when you are stuck in a van for so long.

What kind of movies/books are you into?

Lots of books/movies. I collect b-movies. I have tons of them. All the Troma stuff. All the Russ Meyers all the Emmanuel series. Soft core shit and horror stuff tons of movies. But I do respect the work of Jodowrosky (El Topo, holy mountain, Fando y Lis) a ton. He is probably my favorite director after David lynch. I read a lot of nonfiction. Duane loves the fiction stuff. Jim Thompson, Harry Crewes. Etc.

What is your family life like? Are any of you married? Have kids?

I am the only married guy in the band. No kids. I think we all have had average lives. Your average traumas and dramas. People leave, people die, life goes on.

I saw a movie a few years ago called Strange Days that I could have sworn I saw you guys in, playing a band in a club. How did you get involved in that project?

It is a weird story. We were in NYC at the time working on In a Perfect World, getting ready to take a break because Duane had contracted tendonites. We got offered the job to write a song for the movie and appear in it after the music producer from the movie ran into two separate people who were familiar with us. He was at the Sony studios in L.A. working with Juliette Lewis on the PJ Harvey songs she covered for the movie. Anyway, this guy was asking the receptionist at the studio if she knew of any really heavy new bands that he could use for a scene. He was in negotiations with The Cows and Suicidal Tendencies at the time. She says oh yeah there is this new band we have called Season to Risk. At that moment another woman who worked at the studio in the tape-duping room (and also dated our drummer at the time-Chad Sabin) walked by and heard our name. She says what of Season to Risk? He explains and she says I just happen to have the rough mix of their new album, do you wanna hear it? Done deal. We got the contract and rough script of the scene. We wrote the song and stayed up all night (on acid) 4th of July 1995, I think mixing it. A car picked us up in the morning drove us to the airport. We flew to LA, they picked us up in a limo, took us straight to the set for costuming. Let us wear what we were and we spent two weeks having the time of our lives on a huge Hollywood set. Very fucking surreal.

This one is for the tech-heads, mainly directed toward your guitar/bass player, is there any particular type of equipment that you use religiously?

Duane uses hi-watt amps/speaker cabs only. He loves vintage synths and has a Roland 9. He customized his guitar himself. Can't remember what it was we have traditionally only used Mesa/Boogie stuff for bass but that has changed recently.

And who would you consider some of your personal influences?

Personal influences? A few are Bastro, Brainiac, Bad Brains, Kraftwerk, Buzzoven, Polvo, Devo, Trans Am, Table....basically anything that seemed creative in a world dominated by generic formulaic music.

Who made you want to play guitar?

When I was 7 years old I took guitar lessons and made the teacher teach me all Johnny Cash songs! My mother had me practice in the front yard, while the neighborhood kids played football across the street. I finally quit so I could join in on the neighborhood fun. From the 7th to 10th grade I played cello in the school orchestra. From the 8th to the 12th grade I started playing in the school's guitar class. After high school I was a music major in college for 3 years. I changed my major after thinking I really didn't want to become a teacher. I also took lessons from a local rock guitar guy for about a year.

What does the future hold for s2r?

World domination of course. Hell, who knows we have been doing it so long on such an underground level. Sometimes it feels like it is time to give up. Start something fresh. But then we keep having opportunities that just keep prodding us along. And then we make something fresh. I think The Shattering is our best album and it will stand the test of time. Well, that's my opinion.

Interview with Kevin Calvey

Kevin Calvey is one of the candidates running as a Republican for Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District. I sent out interview requests to all of the known candidates running for this seat. Mr. Kevin Calvey was the first one to respond with his answers. Here are those answers:

Okay, first question.

Why are you running for Congress?

I am running for Congress for much the same reason that I volunteered to deploy to Iraq in 2006, after I had left the State Legislature: I could no longer sit idly by and watch others bear all the burden of defending our country against terrorism, and now I can no longer sit idly by and watch President Obama and Congress destroy our country.

As far as your Republican opponents go, what makes you different from them? Why should someone vote for you as opposed to Thompson, Flanigan or Lankford.

I have greater knowledge of the issues and greater experience with the types of procedures necessary to fight liberal leadership, bring us conservatives back into the majority, and hold Republican leadership's feet to the fire once we regain control of Congress. And I have the life experience as a small businessman, and as the only candidate to serve our country in a combat zone, to make informed choices about the issues facing our country.

If you were elected to Congress, what would you priority be in your first term? That is, what is the #1 issue that concerns you and how would you address it?

Top priority is promoting economic growth by greatly reducing federal spending, and thereby promoting freedom under the rule of law, our Constitution. Congress is spending us into bankruptcy.

How do you feel about term limits?

I support term limits.

How do you feel about salary caps for elected officials?

I support salary caps for elected officials. I will never vote for a pay increase for Congress. If Congress passes a pay increase anyway, I will donate the amount of that increase to charities that serve military personnel and veterans.

Do you support legislation that would make English the official language of the United States? Why or why not?

I support legislation that would make English the official language of the United States because it is our common heritage, and because history proves that nations with multiple official languages rarely survive long.

Along the same lines as that last question, is illegal immigration a major concern for our country and if so, what are your thoughts on how to fix the problem?

Illegal immigration is a major concern. We fix the problem by enforcing the current law, and by no longer allowing automatic citizenship to children born in the US to mothers here illegally.

What are you thoughts on tax reform? Do you support the Fair Tax? Why or why not?

I support the Fair Tax as a reform that will spur economic growth, reduce wasteful tax compliance costs, force the underground economy to pay its fair share of taxes, and make America more competitive in international trade.

What do you think is the best way to fix the failing education system in our country?

Education is a state and local issue, not a federal issue. I would turn over federal education programs to the states.

Do you support legislation that would defines life as beginning at conception?

Yes.

What are your thoughts on health care reform? Does the system need to be reformed and if so, how would you go about doing it?

The ObamaCare bill is a monstrosity that must be repealed. Ultimately, health care is a state issue, not a federal issue. But until we are able to turn responsibility for health care over to the states, we should encourage tort reform to prevent unnecessary legal expenses and wasteful defensive medicine; give a tax break for health insurance and medical costs directly to individuals rather than just to employers, thereby encouraging individual responsibility for one's own health care; and break up insurance monopolies by allowing the purchase of insurance across state lines.

Do you feel like the two-party system has lost touch with the American people and do you think a third party would ever have a chance at elected a third party canidate to a major political position?

Both major political parties bear some of the blame for our fiscal mess. The Democrats in control now are ten times worse than the Republicans were when they last had control, but that is no excuse for Republicans spending too much when they had power. But a third party is not practical. The practical way to reform the system is to leverage the existing power of one of the major parties. Since the Republicans are not as bad as the Democrats, the goal should be to ensure greater fiscal discipline among elected Republicans, and then get them into the majority.

Last question....

What are your thoughts about the Tea Party Movement?

I love the Tea Party movement! I have been fighting liberals/progressives for almost 20 years, and it is great to have reinforcements!

Any final thoughts?

To contribute or volunteer for my campaign, or to get more information, please check out my website at www.kevincalvey.com. I humbly ask for your support for Congress. May God bless you!
