Interview with Dave White

Here is an interview I did via e-mail with Dave White, Independent candidate for Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District.

Why are you running for Congress?

My daughter and I were watching the news one evening and we were talking about some of the economic problems we are facing and how similar our economic crisis is similar to what Greece went through. She looked up at me and asked, "Dad, why don't you fix the problem?" Shortly after that, a commercial for one of my opponents came on and I realized that the people of Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District need real leadership and not career politicians or attorneys in Congress. We need people to run for office who have successful experience in the private sector, people who have real experience in solving difficult problems. I was approached by a candidate in the GOP race to be his campaign manager and he gave me the "tour" of the campaign apparatus. I was disgusted by it and made the decision to run myself.

As far as your opponents go, what makes you different from them? Why should someone vote for you as opposed to a Republican or a Democrat?

Excellent question. First, I am graduate of the Naval Academy with a degree in economics. One of the biggest problems facing this country is that of our economy. Second, I am former Navy SEAL Desert Storm veteran. SEALs are trained to solve problems under the most difficult situations. We know how to optimize the use of all our resources. Third, I have a patent to my name, I am a successful business owner of two businesses. Other candidates on both sides of the aisle call themselves "businessmen," but there is a significant difference to be made. A business owner has to make payroll, deal with Worker's Compensation, health care benefits, personnel issues, identifying market strategy and implementing market strategy. Most of my opponents don't understand these complex issues we business owners face on a daily basis. The Republican Party candidates have for years campaigned as the so-called saviors of problems, promised big and delivered little. Other than rhetoric, there is hardly a difference between the two parties once they get to Washington. There have been some exceptions, mind you, but on the whole, they can't deliver because they are beholden to special interests and big-money donors who financed their campaigns. I have limited my contributions to $100, received only from people who work or live in the 5th District, and I refuse any PAC money. The PACs can endorse me, but I will refuse their money.

If you were elected to Congress, what would you priority be in your first term? That is, what is the #1 issue that concerns you and how would you address it?

Three priorities that all revolve around the economy. First, securing the borders to the north and to the south. Illegal immigration is estimated to cost this country $300 billion per year and that is $300 billion this country cannot afford. Second, we must do something about the national debt. I will work to repeal and replace Obamacare, fight for the Fair Tax and until it is passed into law I will work to reduce the corporate tax to a rate comparable to our international trading partners. At present, the international corporate tax rate is about 18% whereas America's corporate tax rate is about 35%. That is completely unacceptable. By reducing our tax rate, more jobs will be created, more businesses will stay in the United States and the aggregate result will be a reduction of our national debt through responsible revenue production. Lastly, I will fight to reduce spending. Government spending is wickedly out of control and we need a balanced budget amendment with line-item veto powers.

How do you feel about term limits?

Conceptually, I like the idea of term limits though the SCOTUS has ruled term limits are unconstitutional. I will term-limit myself to 8 years, however. If a Navy SEAL, business owner who is debt-free can't fix some of the problems I plan to address, no one can.

How do you feel about salary caps for elected officials?

I support salary caps for elected officials and I also support an elimination of the rule that allows members of Congress to affix their pay raises to all federal pay raises. I will buck the system and work to abolish such a ridiculous rule. A public vote on the floor of the House should be required to give members of Congress any pay raises.

Do you support legislation that would make English the official language of the United States? Why or why not?

I absolutely support such legislation. I support it because of the financial burden it places on taxpayers who are saddled with the additional cost of printing government documents in multiple languages.

Along the same lines as that last question, is illegal immigration a major concern for our country and if so, what are your thoughts on how to fix the problem?

America doesn't have an immigration problem, we have a border security problem. We must secure our borders immediately because it is not only an economic problem, but it is a national security problem. We begin by utilizing all of the resources at our disposal and that includes our military - not the National Guard. In addition, we enforce the laws already on the books and require e-verify for businesses and if they hire illegal workers, those businesses should pay the cost. The very nations who decry American laws that are passed such as that in Arizona have for themselves very strict immigration policies, yet, we continue to allow a virtually unstoppable flow of illegals to stream across our borders. That is completely unacceptable. We crack down on border security, we man the border with both border patrol agents and active duty military, we require businesses to use e-verify and the problem as we know it will be solved. The problem is that on one hand, Republicans support business who wants cheap labor and on the other hand, the Democrats want to grow government and believe a whole new voting block can be created by illegals and their families. The end result is no action, no leadership in Congress.

What are you thoughts on tax reform? Do you support the Fair Tax? Why or why not?

I support the Fair Tax because it provides a level playing field for all Americans regardless of their income level. Until we can get the Fair Tax passed into law, we must reduce the income tax rate for individuals and businesses. The federal government only prints money, it doesn't generate money. We, the people, do.

What do you think is the best way to fix the failing education system in our country?

We begin by slowly dismantling the Department of Education. Administrative costs have continued to soar and Oklahoma is a microcosm for that problem. The whole state of Oklahoma has a smaller population than the city of Houston, but we have more school districts with administrators who are morbidly overpaid. Citizens deserve school choice and until we can wrest the power from the federal government and return it back to communities where education is concerned, when elected, I will go to work on reducing the administrative costs of education on a federal level and return that revenue back to local districts. The goal, of course, is to eventually rid ourselves of the unconstitutional bureaucracy that is the Department of Education.

Do you support legislation that would define life as beginning at conception?

Absolutely. I am a staunchly pro-life Catholic.

What are your thoughts on health care reform? Does the system need to be reformed and if so, how would you go about doing it?

Repeal and replace Obamacare is first priority. When that is accomplished, we begin with tort reform and reduce frivolous lawsuits. From there, we push to allow small businesses to purchase health care insurance across state lines. Competition and free market enterprise always wins out over federal regulation and control.

Do you feel like the two-party system has lost touch with the American people and do you think a third party would ever have a chance at elected a third party candidate to a major political position?

In many ways, it has. Consultants run the parties because they are recruiting fundraisers rather than real leaders. In the past, the two-party system has worked but the American people have become increasing weary of the broken promises from candidates from both parties. During every election cycle, you hear rhetoric from candidates that are finely crafted, polled and homogenized for your protection. At the end of the day, after the confetti is cleaned up from the victory parties, it becomes business as usual. We have seen this time and again in Congress and we have become exceptionally used to it here in the 5th Congressional District. One candidate, for example, touts his record on illegal immigration but forgets to tell the people that he was, in fact, the author of a bill that granted in-state tuition rates for the children of illegal immigrants. Yet another example of the classic bait-and-switch game played by political consultants who tell their candidate what to say and when to say it. We have seen in both parties the "Barbie" and "Ken" candidates whose resume's have been crafted so they can snatch the brass ring and when they do, they fail to deliver time and time again. I have been a Republican all of my adult life and have found the GOP to be very much the same right now in terms of efficacy at the end of the day. If there ever was a good time for an Independent conservative candidate, it is now. We can become the model for other congressional districts to follow.

What are your thoughts about the Tea Party Movement?

I believe the Tea Party Movement is needed and to be applauded. As I have said above, the people are fed up with the federal government. They are fed up with the status quo. They are tired of broken promise after broken promise and ultimately, we are suffering from taxation without adequate representation. If the Tea Party is looking for a candidate who is the embodiment of their philosophy, I am their candidate. My record of success and experienced leadership stands on its own merit - my record was not fabricated so I could run for political office. The Tea Party Movement has raised the bar, has elevated the conversation and it is welcomed. When the average conservative Republican or Democrat looks closely at what the Tea Party Movement stands for and puts aside all of the media spin, they will agree that what they have accomplished is meritorious.

Any final thoughts?

This is the bottom line: I am a Naval Academy graduate with a degree in economics. I am a Navy SEAL officer. I am a Desert Storm veteran. I am a successful business owner with a patent to my name. I am a devoted husband and father of six who is debt-free. I believe and have lived the American dream. It's time to take back Congress from the special interests and the "Barbie and Ken" candidates who are being propped up by consultants and are recruiting fundraisers rather than real leaders from within our communities. Now is the time for the people of Oklahoma to wake up and smell the over-priced coffee they are being billed for by this ridiculous oligarchy that has had control for far too long. It is time to send a leader to Congress who not only understands the turmoil we face, but has the solutions. Not only do I have the solutions, but the record of success to implement those solutions. When I am elected, unlike my opponents, I don't have to return favors the minute I arrive and neither do I have to fall in "lock-step." I can represent the people of Oklahoma's 5th District with a clear conscience.

Cross Canadian Ragweed: DoTM

This is a band that originally formed here in the state of Oklahoma in Yukon. They are considered by some to be a Southern rock band. By others to be a Red Dirt Country band. I don't really actually listen to these guys but I bought Mandy a copy of the Country Tracks Rock Band game and they have a song on there so I decided to go ahead and do one of these things on them.

Third Party Spotlight: Boston Tea Party

The platform of the Boston Tea Party is very simple:
"The Boston Tea Party supports reducing the size, scope and power of government at all levels and on all issues, and opposes increasing the size, scope and power of government at any level, for any purpose."

According to their website they support:

Ending Wars of Aggression -- withdraw forced from Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea, Germany, Japan, and all other occupied nations.

Yeah, I can agree with that.

Ending the Fed - audit the Federal Reserve, repeal the income tax, abolish the IRS and refuse bailouts of any industry.

I agree with this too.

Ending the War on Drugs - repeal all laws against the use and trade of controlled substances.

Absolutely!

Ending the Abuses of Liberty - repeal the Patriot Act. restore privacy by forbidding warrant-less wiretapping. restore habeous corpus.

Unsure about this one. Agree up to a point.

Ending the Immigration Fiasco - open the borders to trade and travel. loosen restrictions on citizens and visitors. Abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agencies.

Okay, they lost me on that one. I sent an e-mail to their Chairman today asking for some explanation on this one.

Campaign "Slogan" of the Day

From Independent Dave White, Independent candidate for Oklahoma's 5th CD.

"To purely represent The People of the 5th Congressional District of Oklahoma without owing favors to Special Interest Groups."

Third Party Spotlight: NAIP

The NAIP, or New American Independent Party, according to their website, was started in 2004 in Pennsylvania.

A blurb on their Facebook page states:
"The system is flawed. Both major parties are excessively dominated by money and overly influenced by single-issue groups. Neither of the two major parties truly reflect the aspirations or will of most Americans."

Here is a link to a Wiki article about them.

High Court Decides in Favor of Gun Rights

The U.S. Supreme Court today decided that the 2nd Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms and that it applies to state and local gun control laws, according to an article in The New York Times.

Supreme Court Rules That Gun Rights Apply to Local Laws

Justice Samuel Alito Jr was quoted as saying:
"the right to self-defense protected by the 2nd Amendment is fundamental to the American conception of ordered liberty...the 2nd Amendment must be applied to limit not only federal power but also that of state and local governments......[the decision may] lead to extensive and costly litigation but that is the price of protecting constitutional freedoms..."

However, on the other side of the coin, it does seem kind of odd that the Supreme Court would be deciding against state's rights.

I consider myself very much in favor of the 2nd Amendment and gun rights but I am also in favor of state's rights and in this case the right of the state to create a law restricting gun use. I'm not saying that I would be in favor of such a law. I'm just saying I would be in favor of a state making that law if they so chose to and keeping the federal government out of its business.

Independents! You Are NOT Wasting Your Vote!

I saw this article over at a new blog I just discovered. It is definitely worth a read.

The Only Wasted Vote is a Vote for a Republican or a Democrat.

Money quote:
"If the two major parties...who have held power for about 2 centuries, are failing to do their duties.......it is only logical that the American people would start to look elsewhere for new ideals and political leadership.....Therefore, the only "wasted vote" is one cast for either of the 2 major parties. A vote cast for a third party.....would be one more vote toward freedom - true freedom, free of the left-right paradigm and the 2-party system."

Is It Worth Fighting?

I was skimming various blogs this evening and came across this one on Classically Liberal that I found very interesting:

I don't really read his blog that often but sometimes the author posts something of interest like this article about John Stossel asking Paul Chabot, a candidate for California State Assembly, about the constitutionality of the drug war.

Mr. Chabot of course fails to respond.

Here is a quote from the blog I wanted to share with you:

"....to make alcohol illegal the government needed a Constitutional amendment. Prohibition was passed, failed and repealed................where [does] the government get its power to wage a war on drugs..."
On a related topic, current drug "czar" and former Seattle Police chief, Gil Kerlikowske, did a radio interview in which he stated:
"legalization is off the charts when it comes to discussion, from my viewpoint...legalization vocabulary doesn't exist for me and it was made clear that it doesn't exist in President Obama's vocabulary....[marijuana is] a dangerous drug.....we will wait for evidence on whether smoked marijuana has any medicinal benefits - those aren't in."

He has also stated that the administration would not longer use the term War on Drugs because it is counter-productive. Which sounds promising. However, he stated it was counter productive because it denotes favoritism of treatment over incarceration.

Layman's terms? The Obama administration prefers drug users be jailed instead of treated.

Yeah, that's going to fix the problem. Just like the 18th Amendment fixed the liquor problem.

Just goes to show you that no matter what people say about studying history, those in charge do NOT learn from it.

Palin for President?

Would Palin be a solid president? | DEBATEitOUT.com

My response?

"Personally, I really just don't see her as a viable candidate."

What the Heck is Tort Reform?

You might have heard this term a lot when reading about the health care debate but do you know what it really means?

According to a Wikipedia article on tort reform, it is referring to a system of changes in the civil justice that reduces tort litigation.

Basically, it reduces the amount of frivolous lawsuits.

What is a frivolous lawsuit?

In my opinion, a woman that sues McDonald's (and wins) because she spills her hot coffee on herself, is a frivolous lawsuit.

A person that sues a gun manufacturer because their particular brand of gun was used in a crime or because they accidentally shot themselves, is a frivolous lawsuit.

I would even say that a lawsuit against the tobacco industry due to lung cancer deaths is a frivolous lawsuit. Anyone that smokes and by now does not know that smoking is bad for your health, I'm sorry, but they are idiots.

An example of tort reform is California's Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act which capped the damages a person can receive from a medical malpractice suit to $250,000 and set a time limit on filing a medical malpractice suit.

From what I have observed, most "ambulance-chasing" lawyers are opposed to tort reform. Makes sense. Most of their money comes from filing frivolous lawsuits.

For what its worth, I support tort reform.

Centrist Quotes

Found these quotes on the website for The American Centrist Party:.

"Centrism has no creed except to listen to the public and enact the most efficient and effective solution in the interest of the American people. Being a Centrist is to be independent, reasonable, and not care about politics but about public service. - - author unknown"
"We want the Republicans out of our bedrooms, the Democrats out of our wallets and both out of our First and Second Amendment rights." - - Alan Nathan (centrist radio talk show host)

And this one is from the website for the Modern Whig Party (which, come to find out, The American Centrist Party disbanded in order to join with):

"...the bottom line is that this one particular issue should not be the sole basis for which political party people affiliate with. For example, many 'pro-choice' voters find themselves agreeing with many traditional GOP issues while many of those opposed to abortion rights find themselves agreeing with many Democratic issues. Despite this fact, voters too often are pushed to choose one party or the other due to the abortion issue alone. It is time to end the trend of having this one issue become a deal breaker."

After reading this, I have to say that I completely agree with this statement. I am, as if you didn't already know, extremely pro-life and extremely anti-abortion and consider myself to be a Republican. Not just because of this particular issue but in a large way because of this issue.

However, it is very possible that because of my views on other issues, perhaps it is time to re-think my political alignment.

Hmmm.......I'll give that one some more thought.

What Is a Centrist?

I was reading a post on Oklahoma Lefty titled Cause Some Don't Agree with How I Do This, which in turn, was a response to a post by Man of the West titled The Center is Not as Safe as You Think It is.

The reason I felt a need to write about these posts is because of this ideas that moderates, i.e. centrists and those that "ride the fence" in regards to political issues.

I disagree.

Personally, I think that a person that is moderate is a person that is conservative on some issues and liberal on others.

In fact, I would consider myself a centrist, even though, technically, I'm a Republican..........for now.....

I say that I think I'm a centrist but would say that I'm a right-leaning centrist since MOST of my views are conservative.

For instance, I believe that abortion is murder and am extremely pro-life.....very conservative on this issue.

However, unlike most conservatives, I am what I would call consistent with my pro-life stance. I do not believe that the death penalty is morally right. I don't think most conservatives would agree with me.

I also am a staunch supporter in 2nd Amendment rights. That would be considered a right-leaning, or conservative philosophy.

But, unlike most conservatives, I support the legalization of marijuana (and possibly other currently illegal narcotics). I think that the government spends entirely too much money on drug control. For instance, I think the position of the nation's drug czar should be discontinued. That position is pointless and does nothing to solve the drug problem in this country which I think should be handled as a medical issue and not a criminal one.

So I don't think that with any of these issues I am "riding the fence."

Riding the fence, to me, means that a person has not decided one way or the other, on a particular issue and I think centrists, or moderates, aren't people that can't decide on their particular political philosophy. I just think that they do not take a staunchly left or right position on everything.

In fact, I decided to look up these terms (centrist and moderate) up on Wikipedia and this is what I found:

Centrist : centrism is the practice of promoting moderate policies that lie between different political extremes.

Moderate : an individual who is not extreme, partisan or radical.

I kind of like this definition.

The Border is Secure?

We can all breath easier now. The Mexican-U.S. border is now secure.

Or so says Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano.

Here is a quote from an article I read in the magazine America's First Freedom:
"I've ridden that border. I've flown it. I've driven it. I know that border. I think, as well as anyone, and I will tell you it is as secure now as it has ever been."

Perhaps she should tell that to the family of Robert Krentz, who the article was written about.

According to the article, a number of criminals crossed the border onto Krentz's ranch, gunned him down, and then took off back across the border.

Yup, sounds like a secure border to me too. Good call there Janet. Just another example of someone inObama's administration that doesn't know jack shit about what they're talking about.

Brogdon Wins Tulsa Straw Poll

A straw poll taken at a GOP rally in Tulsa County this weekend Brogdon has a surprising lead over favorite Mary Fallin.

According to the poll, State Senator Randy Brogdon took 68.4% of the vote over Fallin's 23.6%.

If this straw polls is any indication of what happens in the July primary (and sadly I don't think that it is), Brogdon may actually have a chance at taking the Republican nomination for governor.

Other straw polls were taken at the rally as well.

Incumbent Congressman John Sullivan took 52.9% of the vote.
John Wright took 35.7% in the vote for Attorney General.

Cheney's Illness Political?

I was looking at the NPR website in the political section and came across an article about the hospitalization of former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Saw it again on CNN.com in their "political" section....and again on Fox New's political section.....and then.....strangely on RealClearPolitics....

I just have to ask....is the illness and hospitalization of Dick Cheney a political matter? Seriously?!?

Do the political pundits out there really care that Dick Cheney is sick?

Maybe I'm weird to be wondering this but I really don't think his illness is a matter of political importance.

What do you think?

Straw Poll Taken for 5th Congressional District

Found this article on NewOK.com:

According to the article, a straw poll was taken among the 7 candidates for the seat for the 5th Congressional District.

Kevin Calvey got 47% of the vote and James Lankford got 33%. The rest of the candidates got less than 10% of the vote.

This poll was taken at a candidate forum held on Friday at the Clarion Meridian Convention Center in Oklahoma City where the candidates discussed immigration and health care reform.

I found it interesting that State Senator Shane Jett, who is running for the Republican nomination, basically said that all illegal immigrants should be allowed to file for citizenship. I don't see him getting far in this race. I hope his State Senate seat is secure. Otherwise he'll be looking for another job.

Rick Flanigan offered a simple solution to the immigration problem. Buses.

On the health care issue, it seems that most of the candidates are in agreement that the new health care legislation is unconstitutional and would like Oklahoma to opt out of the new law.

I agree.

How To Combat Terrorism

What is the best way to fight terrorism? | DEBATEitOUT.com

My response?

"Perhaps one way to stop the Muslim extremists from attacking us would be to completely cut off any aid (financial or military) to any country in the Middle East (including Israel).

Let them fight it out for themselves as they have been doing for all of eternity. Either they will figure out how to fix their problems themselves or they will blow themselves up. Either way, they end up leaving us alone."

Arizona Law a Trendsetter?

Found this article on a new iPhone news app I've been reading called The Daily Beast:

20 States Want to Adopt Ariz. Immigration Law? - The Daily Beast

So I guess what I would ask is...if half the country implements the same laws, would President Obama still have the balls to file lawsuits against all of them? I doubt it.

Sadly, I did not see Oklahoma's name in the list of states listed in this article.

The Internet Kill Switch?

This kind of worries me:

The bill being proposed basically gives the President the power to "shut down" the Internet in the event of a cyber attack.

Personally, I don't think this bill will get passed by Congress and technically, I don't think that the current President is crazy enough to try and use it.

One part that the article regarding the bill that really concerns me is where it says:

"the bill would also see the creation of [yet another] new agency within the Department of Homeland Security, the National Center for Cybersecurity and Communications (NCCC). Any private company reliant on the Internet, the telephone system, or any other component of the U.S. 'information infrastructure' would be subject to command by the NCCC and some would be required to engage in information sharing with the agency."
Blockquote
Let's see.......any private company reliant on the internet, the telephone system or any component of the information infrastructure.....that would narrow it down to........uhm.......EVERYONE!!!

I really don't like the idea of some bill coming out saying that any private company would be required to engage in information sharing with some new government agency. What kind of crap is that?!?

Maybe I'm just paranoid due to the fact that I really have not read the bill itself but I certainly don't like what I'm hearing.

What do you guys think?

Top 3 Films: John Cusack

You can not imagine how hard this list was to compile. Rather, how hard it was to narrow this list down to 3 films. Near impossible I tell you! But here is what I came up with:

Better Off Dead (1985)

In this film, his first with director Savage Steve Holland, he plays Lane Meyer. This is actually the first movie I saw with him so it's probably why it got chosen to be in thist list, not to disparage the film any because it is a great film. So many cool "sub-plots" too: the persistent paperboy, the strange psuedo-junkie best friend, the car racing exchange students....

Say Anything (1989)

It would be absolutely impossible to have a best of John Cusack list without this film in it. Cusack plays the lead character Lloyd Dobbler in this Seattle-based post-high school graduate film.

High Fidelity (2000)

I'm not sure how it would be possible to not have a John Cusack list with this one either. Especially considering this film by itself is one of my favorites. In it, he plays Chicago record store owner Rob Gordon. This film was based on a Nick Horby novel, which was also a great book but based in London, not Chicago.

Seriously, the film list of this actor is amazing, he has done so many great films....

Sixteen Candles, Class, The Sure Thing, Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, 8 Men Out, Say Anything, True Colors, City Hall, Grosse Pointe Blank, Con Air, Thin Red Line, Pushing Tin, High Fidelity, America's Sweethearts, Serendipity, Identity, Runaway Jury, Must Love Dogs, War Inc.......

See why it was so hard?

Coming Soon To Theaters

August

Scott Pilgrim vs the World (another Michael Cera vehicle but i liked Nick and Nora so I'll give it a try)

Should Just Anyone Run?

[[I am re-posting this article (with some edits and a new title) after having deleted the original article. The reason the original article was deleted was because there was something in the original article that I said that should have been omitted. So, instead of just editing the article, I am just going to make some corrections to it and re-post it as I am doing now.]]

There is a candidate running for Oklahoma's House of Representatives for District 100 that I feel just should not even bother running. She is running as a Republican and her name is Elise Hall.

Her website speaks of her vast business experience and what I don't quite understand is how someone that is 21 years old and still living at home with their parents claim to be a businesswoman.

A quote from her website states:
"As the Director of Marketing for [name of company omitted], a local landscape management company, I believe that as we reduce the burden that government has placed on businesses, our state and society will be strengthened."

While I agree that some of the burden from small business owners should be relaxed, I question her motives behind this statement.

You see, the company she is referring to which shall remain nameless has had a little bit of trouble dealing with the government in the past. They have failed to pay their taxes and according to a news article back in 1996 by NewOK.com, the company was raided for hiring illegal immigrants.

According to NewsOK.com, nearly 25% of its workforce was made up of illegals.

In addition, at one point in time, the company owed the state over $250,000 in back taxes.

And she calls herself a conservative. Is this the type of conservative we want as an elected official? I don't.

Here's another quote from her blog I also want to touch on:
"The fact is, we do not need more career politicians or lawyers in our legislature, but businessmen and women like myself who see this role the way the Founding Fathers designed it....."

Again, while I agree with the statement about not needing more career politicians in our legislature, why the slam on lawyers? Does she not read our nation's history? The history of our Founding Fathers that she mentions here? Most of them were LAWYERS!!! Thomas Jefferson? Lawyer. John Adams? Lawyer.

I'm not saying that we should have a legislature comprised entirely of lawyers but here is something you probably haven't thought of.

It is the job of the legislature to what? Create laws. Lawyers know the law. Lawyers study law. It seems to me that a lawyer is the best type of person suited to make our laws better due to the fact that the law is what they do.

However, I don't think we necessarily need any ambulance chaser type lawyers like Tim McCoy, who by the way is also running for House District 100.

To be quite honest, I don't necessarily think that Elise Hall is all that viable a candidate to begin with. Mostly I think she is just using her youth as an appeal to the young voters but I that once the primaries come, most voters aren't going to buy into that sort of thing.

In any case, I have no intention of supporting this candidate...as if you couldn't tell.

Should Obama Fire McCrystal?

This article I basically just posting to get other people's thoughts on the General McCrystal situation?

What do you think President Obama should do with him? Fire him or keep him on as the commander in Afghanistan?

From what I understand, he and his staff members did an interview with Rolling Stone magazine and said some disparaging things about President Obama.

On the one hand, I have to think he was only saying what he really felt about the President and he, as an American citizen, has the right to speak his mind. After all, even though he is in Afghanistan, he is still an American citizen and is protected by the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment rights just like everyone else.

On the other hand, even though I terribly do not like the man and do not think he deserves to be the commander-in-chief of our armed services, he unfortunately currently is the President and is the General's boss.

Do you think General McCrystal was wrong in talking trash about the President? Aren't there a lot of people out there that talk trash about their boss when they don't like them? Course, the General is in the public eye and perhaps him talking smack about the President gives our country a little bit of a black eye considering that perhaps many will lose respect for us when they realize that our military commanders don't even respect their commander-in-chief.

Personally, I believe that a person running for the President of the United States should be required to have some sort of military experience but that's just me and that's a topic for another post.

In any case, what do you think? Should Obama fire him or should he forgive him and let him keep his job?

Immigrants Moving Out

Due to the new Arizona law, many illegal immigrant families are moving out of Arizona according to this article The Huffington Post:

Arizona Immigration Law: Immigrant Families Leaving State

Two main things struck me while I was reading this article.

The first one is that I a pretty sure this was the intended result of those that created this law. In hopes that any illegal immigrants would choose to move somewhere else, hopefully back to their country of origin.

The second thing I found interesting about the article is I wonder if these illegal immigrants know what that the law itself does not automatically deport them.

For those that aren't actually aware, the law states that police are required to question anyone they "suspect" to be in the country illegal but only while investigating another crime.

So basically, if any of these illegals are actually law-abiding citizens, they really have nothing to fear as long as they keep their noses clean.

In any case, I have to be honest. I am glad that these illegal immigrant families are leaving the state. Perhaps they will attempt to try and come to the country legally next time.

Unfortunately, the article also states that many of the families are not planning on returning to their country of origin. They are just planning to move to another state.

Perhaps, if the federal government would actually enforce its laws, we would not be having this problem.

Interview with David Looby

As promised earlier, here is an interview that did via e-mail with David Looby, candidate for Oklahoma State House District 100.

Why are you running for the Oklahoma State Legislature?

I am running for State Representative because I believe that my experience and expertise is needed at the Capitol to put an end to the daily abuses that I see at the state government level. I feel that government has only become efficient at overtaxing its citizens and then spending frivolously on inefficient government programs. Oklahoma is facing real budgetary problems in the future and our state needs someone with real world experience who can bring common sense back to government. It makes no sense to consistently raise fees and taxes that burden our citizens while cutting essential government services. Given my expertise and strong fiscal conservatism, I believe that I can make a real difference at the Capitol to reduce our tax burden, control government spending and eliminate government abuse.

As far as your Republican opponents go, what makes you different from them?

The biggest difference between me and my opponents is my experience and expertise. As a successful tax attorney and small business owner who has extensive knowledge of our federal and state tax system, I have the experience necessary to handle the issues that affect District 100 and Oklahoma the most today: our economy, our budget, how we allocate and spend money and, of course, our tax burden. As the only tax attorney at the Capitol, I will make an immediate difference in balancing our budget, reducing wasteful and frivolous spending and eliminating our tax burden. I understand our tax laws and the abuses that are taking place. I have the right expertise to make the changes that will benefit District 100 and the great State of Oklahoma. I have committed my life to protecting families, their livelihoods, property and businesses from the abuses of government and will certainly do the same for the residents of District 100 and for all of Oklahoma.

If you are elected to the State House, what would your priority be in your first term? What is the #1 issue in our state that concerns you and how would you address it?

My priorities when elected to the State House include: (1) strengthening the economy through job creation, eliminating the budget crisis, reducing wasteful spending and providing effective tax relief; (2) improving our roads, bridges and infrastructure; and (3) improving education, health care and energy production. The number one issue that affects our state and concerns me the most is the budget gap and the tough choices that must be made to ensure that essential government services are not cut. I would reduce the budget gap by (1) reducing state fees and taxes, which has been proven to increase revenue and foster a better environment for business; (2) cutting wasteful spending and inefficient government programs; (3) placing a moratorium on tax credits; (4) freezing new spending programs; and (5) decreasing annual agency budget increases.

What are your thoughts on term limits?

I am in favor of term limits at both the state and federal level. I do not support or believe in career politicians.

What are your thoughts about making English the official language of the State of Oklahoma?
I support making English the official language of Oklahoma and our nation. I am against illegal immigration and amnesty for illegal immigrants. Illegals are a tremendous drain on Oklahoma's economy since the taxpaying public subsidizes their health care, education, Medicaid benefits, uninsured motorist coverage and other government benefits they receive without ever paying any taxes. In addition, illegals drive the competitive wage rate down in Oklahoma since employers can often pay them significantly less than that which an Oklahoman can earn doing the same job. Therefore, I am in favor of a tough immigration law similar to that which Arizona has passed to protect Oklahoma's borders, identify those who are in our State illegally, and bring them into the system.

Along the same lines as the last question, what do you feel that our state legislation can and should do about the problem of illegal immigration? What would you propose to fix the problem?

I am in favor of a tough immigration law similar to that which Arizona has passed to protect our State's borders. I am also very much in favor of penalizing businesses that knowingly employ illegals in Oklahoma while turning a blind eye to the fictitious documentation that is often provided to verify their legal status.

Do you think that Oklahoma's public education system is broken and if so how would you propose it get fixed?

I believe that education is the backbone of our society and every child should be given every opportunity to earn a college degree. I am committed to protecting education in Oklahoma. I do not support cutting teacher salaries and other essential services in order to make ends meet. We must identify the waste and inefficiency that is destroying our public education system. It does not make any sense for the State of Oklahoma to have 531 independent school districts to go along with all of the superintendent salaries and administrative costs that bloat our state budget. I believe that the public education system must be audited to identify and eliminate the waste that is presently taking place and determine those school districts that can be consolidated.

Do you think that marijuana should be legalized for medicinal purposes? Why or why not?

No, I do not support the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes or any other controlled substances.

Any final thoughts you would like to leave with my readers?

I want to thank all of your readers for taking the time to read this interview. I believe that Oklahoma needs real leaders with the right expertise to tackle the issues that will affect our great State for years to come. Many politicians talk about being fiscally conservative by cutting taxes and wasteful spending. However, I believe that I actually have the necessary expertise to reduce our taxes, cut wasteful spending and make the reforms that must be made to put more money back into the taxpayer's pocket as opposed to having government continuously take more and more from you each year as a result of their poor spending choices. In that regard, I would love to have your vote and support in the primary election on July 27th. I can be reached via email at www.loobyforoklahoma.com or via telephone at 405-470-6436.

Interview with Rick Flanigan

Rick Flanigan is a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress in Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District (the district left vacant by Republican Mary Fallin).

Based on what I do know about this district, it is extremely conservative (much like most of the state) and extremely pro-Republican so in my opinion (unless something really strange happens) whoever gets the Republican nomination in the July primaries, will be the 5
th District's next Congressman.

Rick took some time out of his busy campaign schedule to answer some questions for Otter Limits so here is a transcript of that interview:

Why are you running for Congress?

Steve, I have a great deal of concern about where our Country is headed. When I left the Navy, I was proud to have served my Country and performed my Civic duty. So for the last 20 years I have felt that all I had to do was try and make an informed vote, and that our elected officials would take care of the rest. I figured that even if we end up with a not so great politician that surely they couldn't mess it up too bad in only 2 years. Well I think most of us realize now that "yes they can". When I took the Oath to protect and defend the Constitution I meant it. Our Constitution gives us the best form of Government ever known to man, and we must defend it from overzealous career politicians.

As far as your Republican opponents go, what makes you different from them? Why should someone vote for you as opposed to James Lankford, Mike Thompson, Shane Jett, Kevin Calvey or Johnny Roy?

I have never been involved with politics before. Most of the guys in this race have been politicians in one way or another most of their adult lives. I have no political experience. Now some folks feel that is a bad thing, but the way I see it is that I have no political baggage. I have not made my living off of the backs of the taxpayer since I signed my discharge papers. I owe no favors and no one owes me any. But let me tell you about the experience that I do have. I started my business from scratch at the age of 24. I have actually signed the front of a paycheck. I listen to all of these politicians talk about government creating jobs, well I know that government does not create real jobs. Sure they can pull a little more from the taxpayer or worse yet borrow it from our kids and grand kids and use it to create a temporary make work program, but real jobs come from real people who are motivated to make a profit. Real jobs come from main street not Pennsylvania Avenue. Now, I realize that I lack some of the qualities of being a good candidate. For example I am not great at tap dancing. When someone asks me a question I tend to be a little too blunt, but I feel that if you wanted a sugar coated answer you would have asked Willy Wonka. But I would ask you, which do you prefer a good candidate or a good Representative.

If you were elected to Congress, what would you priority be in your first term? That is, what is the #1 issue that concerns you and how would you address it?

Reduce spending!

We are on a path to oblivion if we continue to spend money the way that we have been. The problem with most politicians these days is that they do not look at it as money. It is just numbers that they can use to get votes for their next election. Every dollar they spend on a pet project came out of another persons pocket but I wonder if they even think about where that dollar came from. The forgotten man must be remembered by those in office.

How do you feel about term limits?

I strongly support term limits. Sure, I understand the arguments against them. This was an issue that was hotly debated during the Continental Congress and the same arguments are being made today, but I believe we have far too many examples of what happens when you leave someone with ambitions of power in office for too long. Serving in Congress 200 years ago was a duty and not the most comfortable way for someone to spend their time, but today it is a little too comfortable. Power is like poverty in that if one is comfortable in it, one is less likely to leave it.

On another note, Oklahoma voted 3 decades ago for term limits, but the Supreme Court overruled it for Federal office holders. I think that the people of the Oklahoma made it clear that they do NOT want their Representatives to serve more than 12 years and for any one to do so is disingenuous to the voters of Oklahoma. I WILL NOT SERVE MORE THAN 12 YEARS.

How do you feel about salary caps for elected officials?

In my previous response I mentioned that I believe that it is a little too comfortable being in elected office. I believe that US Representatives are over paid. Elected office is a Duty and an honor; it should not be a path to wealth. I favor a complete restructuring of Congressional pay. Perhaps it should be similar to Military pay. Some will make the argument that it is more expensive to maintain two residences; I would answer that if barracks are good enough for a Marine sent TDY to Korea for a year then surely it is good enough for an elected official who just wants to serve the public.

Do you support legislation that would make English the official language of the United States? Why or why not?

Yes, I do support English as the official language.

Along the same lines as that last question, what are your thoughts on the new law recently passed in Arizona that makes being an illegal immigrant a crime? How would you go about fixing the illegal immigration problem?

Illegal immigration is a crime pure and simple. It is no different than some one breaking into your home. There is no excuse that I find acceptable. Imagine some one breaks into your home and when you call the police, the officer says to you that he is going to allow the trespasser to stay in your home because it is hot outside and your AC works really well. Sure he is a trespasser but he is just looking for a more comfortable environment. I hear folks talk about amnesty, well my understanding of amnesty is forgiving someone for a crime that they committed not for a crime that they are still committing, and being in this Country illegally is a crime in progress. People are her illegally because the reward is greater than the punishment. Things like free health care, free education, welfare, etc. work as a lure to encourage an illegal activity.

There are a few things that must be done immediately. We must secure our border; we must remove the incentives to commit the crime. No law can be enforced if there is no punishment for committing the crime so there should be a punishment for illegal immigration. I would propose something similar to the no fly list. We can call it the No Visit list. If you are caught here illegally, you will be deported and you will never be allowed to be here again. I believe that a large majority of those who come her illegally have dreams of amnesty one day granting them the privilege of becoming legal residents. So we give them a few years before it goes into effect, so that they have plenty of opportunity to leave on their own.

What are you thoughts on tax reform? Do you support the Fair Tax? Why or why not?

I do support a fair tax or national sales tax. The current tax system is out of control. I have personally spoken to people who would love to start a new business but are terrified of the Federal tax system. When you consider that nearly every private sector job that is created is created by either a small business or a big business that started as a small business, an over burdensome tax code actually decreases new jobs.

What do you think is the best way to fix the failing education system in our country?

The first step to fixing our failing education system is to do away with the Federal Dept of Education and “No Child Left Behind”. We must bring education back to the local level. Teachers spend most of their time today trying to teach to a test and there is no fill in the circle test that can measure a child’s ability to think or solve a problem. We are teaching our kids to churn out answers without any understanding of the why or how. All of life's problems can not be answered with abc or d

Another thing that I would like to see is school vouchers. We must put the power to choose an education for our children back into the hands of parents.

Do you support legislation that would define life as beginning at conception?

I absolutely do. Most people don’t realize this but my wife was adopted at birth. Of course we are unsure of all of the circumstances but suffice it to say that I for one am extremely grateful that Cathie’s biological mother chose adoption over abortion.

What are your thoughts on health care reform? Does the system need to be reformed and if so, how would you go about doing it?

The first step to health care reform should be tort reform but when you consider that 40% of Congress are attorneys, tort reform becomes a huge obstacle to comprehensive health care reform.

Do you feel like the two-party system has lost touch with the American people and do you think a third party would ever have a chance at elected a third party candidate to a major political position?

I do not believe that the two party system has lost touch with the American people so much as I feel that politicians in general are out of touch with the American people. Many of the politicians today have been running for office in one form or another since they first ran for class President in Jr High. That is why we have so many of the problems we have today. Let’s imagine for a moment that you decide in Jr High that you want to be a Dr. so you spend half of your life working towards that medical degree and you finally become a Dr. You did it for all the right reasons and over the years you develop a healthy practice and are making a positive difference in the world. Now imagine that you are faced with a moral choice; if you do the right thing your career is over, but if you do the morally wrong thing you get to continue practicing medicine. The wrong thing goes against everything you stand for and believe in, but you realize that the only way you can continue doing what you love, what you have prepared for your entire life. Medicine is all you know and you have made so many sacrifices, but the only way you can continue is to relinquish the high moral ground you have lived your life on. Suffice it to say that it would probably be a very difficult decision. I personally want a Representative that would walk away from politics before he would sell out. I want a Representative that will always place right before self.

What ideas do you have to control government spending and are you concerned at all with the percentage of the budget that is allocated to military spending? Do you think the percentage is too much or too little?

I believe that we need a fundamental change in the way government budgeting is operated. First we must eliminate the practice of basing this years budget on last years. I have government employees come into my store towards the end of the fiscal year simply to use up their budget, because if they do not use all funds allocated to their budget this year then next year their budget will be cut, but if they use every dime allocated then they receive a budget increase. Have you ever been to a government surplus auction and seen the quantity of brand new, still in the package products? Where do you think that comes from. It comes from you and I. I went to a school surplus auction once where they were selling pallets of copy paper for pennies on the dollar while that same week my youngest sons school was asking for donations so that teachers could buy copy paper to send worksheets home with the kids.

I often hear conservatives use the analogy that Government should be run like a business. Well I disagree. The fundamental goal of a business is to grow. The problem we have today is that Government has been run too much like a business. The rate of growth is off the charts. Every year we add more and more people to the government customer base. I would like to see fewer people dependant upon the government, not more. Sure I would like to see government run with a business like efficiency but NOT with the basic business philosophy of more customers, more revenue and more profits

What are your thoughts about the Tea Party Movement?

I love the Tea Party Movement. It is refreshing to see so many folks engaged in their government. I used to sit at home and throw grapes at the TV, thinking my wife and I were the only ones that feel this way, but the Tea Party events are a great opportunity to be a part of something that reminds us that we are truly not alone. The Tea Party groups have also done a great job of keeping the average Joe informed and has helped thousands of people become more involved. I made my decision to run for public office at a Tea Party event. In April of 2009 I attended, for the first time in my life, a public gathering of like minded Americans on the steps of the State Capital. I was standing behind a guy who in response to a comment from the “stage” hollered “throw all the bums out”. I remember thinking to myself “that won’t do any good, we will just end up with a new set of bums”. On the way back to work that afternoon I realized that I was culpable for the situation our Country was in because I had never worked on anybody’s campaign. I had complained about politicians but I had never put my energy behind getting the right guy elected. I had become content voting for the lesser of two evils. I decided that day that I was going to get behind the right guy. I started looking for a candidate that I believed had the right stuff. I looked into the guys that had announced and the ones who were expected to run. After three months of spending nearly every free minute reading bills they had introduced and analyzing their votes and public statements, I was very disappointed to realize that there was not one of them that I was willing to put their sign in my yard much less take time away from family to volunteer on their campaigns. I would lay in bed at night unable to sleep and that sentence from Junior High Typing class kept going through my mind “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their Country”. You know when you are trying to show someone how to do something and they just keep messing up because their heart is not in it or they are motivated by something other than doing a good job and you finally just reach the point where you say “just move I’ll fix it? Well I had reached that point and at the Tea Party rally on the 4th of July last year I finally accepted that my name should be on the ballot. So here I am, just a normal guy who would rather go to his sons ball game than write an essay, doing what I feel must be done. Sometimes you have to do what must be done instead of what you would like to do.

Any final thoughts?

I can not do this alone. I need the help and support of folks just like me. I have not solicited and will not accept any contributions from PACS or Special Interest groups. You will not see a bunch of TV ads or post cards in the mail from me. I need folks who are as fed up as I am to introduce me to their friends and neighbors. Visit my website at www.rickflanigan.com and then forward it to your friends. Help me to shout it from the rooftops that we are not beholden to career politicians and self serving lobbyist. The time to be counted has passed and it is now time to stand and be heard.

Steve, I thank you for the opportunity to be heard and your efforts and energies to inform and enlighten.

Thank You
