Interview with Steve Beren

Steve Beren is a conservative Republican challenger to Jim McDermott in Washington's 7th Congressional District as stated in my previous article Steve Beren Announces Candidacy Against McDermott.

I did not mention this in my previous article but Washington's 7th District is by far the most liberal district in Washington.

I was able to conduct an interview via Facebook instant messaging with Steve today and this is the transcript of that interview:

First off, why are you running for Congress?

[Because] the incumbent Democrat, Jim McDermott, is a far left extremist and a very strong supporter of the Obama agenda [and] no Republican [has] filed for ballot status against him. I’m running to make sure Republicans have a voice in the race, and an option in the primary.

If you were to get elected to Congress, what would be your priority? That is what is the #1 issue that concerns you and how do you plan to address it?

Repeal Obamacare. I would sponsor a bill for repeal, and if President Obama vetoed it, I would keep re-introducing it.

Regarding tax reform, do you support the FairTax? Why or why not?

I personally favor a very low flat tax, with a $25,000 per person personal deduction. For a full exposition of my tax reform proposals, see http://www.berenforcongress.com/fiscalconservative.html

So are you opposed to the implementation of the FairTax?

I prefer a 10% flat tax, plus some other measures as indicated on my campaign website. I don’t favor a national sales tax of any kind. Whatever the tax system in place, taxes will be high. A sales tax can be 1% or 15%; a flat tax could be 10% or 60%. The real key is reducing spending by limiting the federal government to its constitutional functions.

As most of my readers know, I am a supporter of the FairTax. While I agree that no matter what, until we get control of the spending of the federal government, taxes will always be high. However, I would rather see a national sales tax than a flat tax. I feel like a flat tax would be harmful to our country's less than wealthy citizens.

I would say, however, that any type of tax reform, even a flat tax, is better than what we have now.

Do you support legislation that would make English the official language of the United States?

Yes. In my 2008 campaign, I signed the U.S. English Candidate Pledge.

How do you feel about term limits and salary caps?

I’m not for term limits, although I respect the sentiment and intent of many citizens who support term limits. We already have term limits. For example, on Presidents. Neither Eisenhower nor Reagan could run for a third term and I believe each was superior to his successor. Obama ran for an open presidency. A brand new candidate can be just as corrupt, arrogant, and progressive as a long time officeholder. Federalist #63 refers to politicians who can (temporarily) fool the voters. This can be a first time candidate. Or it can be a long time office holder.

The real problem is the need to restore the federal government to its proper constitutional role. Obama was not in the U.S. Senate very long but that didn’t stop him from being progressive, corrupt, arrogant, or dismissive of the Constitution.

I think Senators and Congressmen get paid enough as is. No reason to increase their pay in my opinion.

I disagree with Steve's thoughts on term limits here. I do not think any one person should make a career out of politics, no matter how honorable their intentions are. I thought Reagan was a good President, but I was not sad when he left office. I also, however, thought (despite what many think of him) Bill Clinton was a good President. But again, was not sad when he left office. It was their time to go.

Are you familiar with the Contract From America and if so, would you consider signing it?

As an individual Tea Party activist, I was involved in the online process that led to the development of the 10 points. I was at the April 15, 2010 Tea Party rally at the Washington Monument where it was unveiled. I signed it as an individual and literally seconds before you asked me about it, I signed it again as a congressional candidate.

[Editors Note: Steve was one of the first Tea Party activists in the nation. He spoke at the Presidents Day Porkulus Protest in Seattle in February 2009 and his website contains videos of some speeches he gave at other Tea Party protests in February 2009 and April 2009. He was present at the Tea Party March in Washington, D.C. in September 2009 and the in April 2010.]

What is the best way to create jobs in our county?

Jobs are created by businessmen, not by governments. The best way for a government to encourage economic growth is to allow the free market capitalist system to work. I agree, for example, with Rand Paul of Kentucky, who in his primary night victory speech criticized Obama for apologizing for the American system of free enterprise and capitalism.

When the federal government is involved in areas not permitted by the Constitution, it inevitably interferes with, and distorts, the free market. Excessive bureaucracy leads back to excessive taxation and excessive regulation. Getting the federal government back to its proper constitutional functions is the best thing that can be done to promote economic growth and reduce unemployment.

I for one agree with Steve on this issue. I do not think the government can create jobs. I think it is the governments job to let the free market system to work and to let the free market create jobs. Unless government is spending more money to create more government jobs, they can not create jobs.

That kind of brings me to my next question. What are your thoughts of the government takeover of the automobile industry?

The takeover of the auto industry is unconstitutional and is a perfect example of government interference distorting and interfering with the free market. This is also my view of the September 2008 TARP bailout and the February 2009 “stimulus.” See, for example, www.berenforcongress.com/bailout.html.

Do you think we should get our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan? Why or why not?

I oppose the Obama foreign policy of apology, weakness, retreat, appeasement, decline, and defeat. By the way, that is a policy wholly supported by [his opponent] Jim McDermott, U.S. Senators from Washington State] Patty Murray, and Maria Cantwell.

The Democratic/liberal/leftist “antiwar” movement just doesn’t understand what victory means. And they just don’t understand what defeat means. Unfortunately, we now have a President who lacks enthusiasm for national security. Who has no stomach for a strong military and has no interest in victory over Islamic fascism…a stance supported by McDermott, Murray, and Cantwell.

My support for a victory strategy is explained at www.berenforcongress.com/democrats.html.

Also, see a speech I gave at a conservative conference in October 2009 at http://bit.ly/7mL6Pw.

McDermott called our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq “mercenaries” in a “war on civilians.” Outrageous! I support the troops and I support victory over Islamic fascism.

I have nothing but disrespect for Congressman McDermott calling our troops mercenaries. I do support our troops. I just don't support their mission as prescribed by the federal government.

I also think Obama's policy of apology and agree with Steve that his foreign policy is kind of weak. However, I do not think we belong in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Along the same lines as that last question, do you feel like our country spends too much or too little on military spending?

National security and maintenance of a strong military are legitimate functions of the federal government. In fact, they are among the most important proper functions of the government.

If we eliminated the federal government programs and activities not authorized by the Constitution, overall federal spending would be less than half of what it is now. We would be able to reduce taxes substantially. The power of American creativity, invention, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit would be unleashed, resulting in a strong prosperity. We would have more than enough for core functions of government, such as military defense of our nation.

The liberals, progressives, and Democrats generally look at military spending as the first place to cut. But it is actually the first line of defense of freedom and liberty. We’ve had Presidents and Congresses that underfunded the military and now we have a President who has a foreign policy of weakness.

It's true. One of the primary functions of a federal government is national defense. The problem is I don't think we should be spending obscene amounts of money for war after war after war, or spending billions for our country to maintain military bases in countries where we do not belong.

Do you feel like the 2 party system has lost touch with common Americans and do you think a 3rd party would ever have a chance at being elected to a major position?

We don’t have a two party system. We have a multiparty system. The voters show every election day which parties have their relative confidence and which parties are out of touch, irrelevant, or out of touch.

Some people say we “need” a third party because the two parties are “the same.” Others say we need a third party because the two parties are too far apart, too extreme, too partisan, too embattled with each other. Both rationales are wrong.

Besides, we already have the Libertarian, Green, Constitution, and various other parties (including several socialist parties).

I am a Republican and I am a conservative. I believe the Republican Party is strongest and most effective when conservatives are in the dominant position within the party. And I believe America is best served by the Republican Party. Currently, liberals, progressives, socialists, union bureaucrats, environmental alarmists, and feminist extremists dominate the Democratic Party.

So do you think that the reason why the Republican and Democratic parties have dominated the system for so long is because the people want them there?

The Republican Party, at its best, has been closely associated with the abolition of slavery, the success of the free market system, individual responsibility, a strong national defense, family values, patriotism, and limited government. Support for our party has gone up and it has gone down. But when we stick to what I call “five star conservatism” we are most effective and gain the most support from the American people.

Over its entire history, the Republican Party has been true enough to its principles so that it has endured as a powerful force and a major party. Other parties, like the Federalists or the Whigs, eventually failed and faded away.

In a free society, there will be a flourishing of different views. Only in a communist or other dictatorship will there be a one party system. The Democratic Party represents a clearly different political philosophy and program, a totally different approach to the Constitution and the role of the government. So while I disagree with them, I understand why they exist as the natural counterpoint to the Republican.

He does make a valid point here. The people keep voting in the Republicans and Democrats so maybe that is what the people really want.

Any final thoughts you would like to leave with my readers?

The main message of my campaign: repeal Obamacare, no more bailouts, no more stimulus, cut taxes, cut spending, promote economic growth, limited government (not big government), big liberty (not limited liberty).

I am a pro-liberty, five star conservative, grassroots Tea Party activist, 9/11 Republican.

Great thanks for taking the time to do this interview Steve.

Third Party Spotlight: American Centrist Party

"America is 70% Centrist. So why are we letting 15% from the left and 15% from the right control our nation?"

According to their website, The Centrist Party:
"Centrism is about achieving common sense solutions that fit the current needs; support the public trust, serve the common good; and consideration of short and long term needs."

The Centrist Party was formed in 2006 but it has never been recognized as an official party in any of the states.

The Chairperson of the party is John P. Reisman and its headquarters is in Big Bear Lake, California.

They are opposed to earmarks and support increased regulation because they feel less regulation is not rational.

They advocate getting special interests out of the political process entirely and reducing big money influence in it.

The website states that:
"Congress is left or right, and all bills suffer or gain from the tug of war between the parties....Without a Centrist Party we are bound by the extremes. Even though many politicians consider themselves Centrist (usually only during election campaigns), they are still tied to their constituents, party platforms, special interests and personal agendas."

Runoff in the 100th District

The State House race for Oklahoma's 100th legislative district has come down to a runoff between David Looby and Elise Hall.

I really just find it hard to take Ms. Hall seriously. I just find it hard to believe that the voters in the 100th district find her to be a viable candidate.

The strange thing is that Tuesday night she received almost 500 more votes than Looby. The person that took third place, Tim McCoy got 706 votes so it is possibly that if those 700 people that voted for him decide to vote for Looby than he could still win the runoff.

I'm just not sure I understand why people in that district are taking a 21 year old seriously.

Perhaps, all of the people that are voting for her are members of her church, Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. Not knowing how many people attend that church, I can't say whether or not all of her votes came from there or not.

Perhaps she is getting the youth vote since she is so young. But again, without knowing the age range of people that live in the 100th District I can not say for sure.

There is a quote from her website that disturbs (well, disturbs might be too strong a word but it is the best one I can think of right now) me a bit:
"The fact is, we do not need more career politicians or lawyers in our legislature, but businessmen and women like myself who see this role the way the Founding Fathers designed it, as a public servant."

I agree that we don't need career politicians but I don't understand why she is lumping lawyers in with career politicians. And she is insinuating that the Founding Fathers did not want lawyers in the state legislatures and that makes no sense to me. Most of the Founding Fathers WERE LAWYERS!!

Now, having said that I don't think that ALL of our legislators have to be lawyers. It is the fact that she is making lawyers out to be the bad guys that disturbs me.

The fact is, having lawyers in the state legislature is not a bad thing. Legislators are LAW makers. Who better to make laws than those that study the law? LAWYERS!

On other matters, I can appreciate that Elise is staunchly pro-life as I am and the fact that she has the common sense to know that illegal immigrants are criminals.

In the long run, I don't think she is a bad person and probably means well. It just doesn't sit right with me that a 21 year old that has not even graduated college yet is running to be a state legislature. Seems to me that she is too young for this kind of position.

Personally, when I put Elise Hall and her stance on the issues alongside David Looby, Mr. Looby comes out on top.

David Looby is a tax attorney that has started his own law firm here in Oklahoma City in 2007. A business which is still going strong.

I believe that tax reform is a very important issue in our state (and in our country) and that is why I point out the fact that he is a tax attorney. Not only is he a lawyer, a person that studies the law, knows the law, and knows how to make the law better, he is a tax attorney, so he knows the tax laws, and definitely how to make them better because he deals with tax laws every day.

Come August 24th, I highly suggest that vote for David Looby for Oklahoma State Legislature.

Am I A Pundit?

Yesterday, someone in a conversation referred to me as a pundit. I thought, me? A pundit? Am I?

So I decided to look up the word.

I first looked at the :

Basically it says a pundit is someone who offers to mass-media his or her opinion or commentary on a particular subject (most typically political analysis) on which they are knowledgeable.

Also, when you look at the title on the Wiki article, it has the word 'expert' in parentheses following the word Pundit.

I would not necessarily consider myself an expert in politics so with that in mind, I guess I am not a pundit.

However, I am never satisfied with just using one source so I decided to go to the dictionary.

The Random House Dictionary (2010) defined a pundit as:

"1. a learned person, expert, or authority.
2. a person who makes comments or judgments, especially in an authoritative manner; critic or commentator."

So if you are looking at definition #1, I would say I am definitely not a pundit. I am not an expert or an authority by any stretch of the imagination.

If you look at definition #2, I do make comments and judgments and I would consider myself a critic and/or a commentator.

So I guess the jury is still out on this one.

Am I or am I not a pundit? What do you think?

Top 3 Films: Wesley Snipes

Happy 48th Wesley!

Major League (1989)

In one of his earliest films, Snipes starts alongside a casting lineup including Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Rene Russo, Corbin Bernsen, Bob Uecker, and Chelcie Ross as a member of the Cleveland Indians baseball team.

This film was quite successful and was followed by two sequels although Snipes did not reprise his role as center fielder Willie Mays Hayes.

White Men Can't Jump (1992)

In another sports film, co-stars with Woody Harrelson as a team of neighborhood basketball hustlers. Rosie Perez also starred in this film as Harrelson's girlfriend.

It was one of the highest grossing films in 1992.

Blade (1998)

This film is based on a Marvel Comics character. Snipes starts as the title character who is a half-man/half-vampire vampire hunter.

It also stars Stephen Dorff as Deacon Frost, Blade's main adversary in the film, Kris Kristofferson as Whistler, Blade's mentor, and a post-porn star Traci Lords as one of Deacon Frost's lesser vampires.

2 sequels followed this film, both with Snipes reprising his role as the main character and it spawned a television show, called Blade: The Series, which did not star Snipes. It did not last long, garnering only 12 total episodes.

Steve Beren Announces Candidacy Against McDermott!

Finally!!!!

Yesterday, Republican activist Steve Beren announced his candidacy for U.S. Congress in Washington State's 7th District against the ultra-liberal Jim McDermott.

He filed today with the office of Washington's Secretary of State to run as an official write-in candidate (Washington allows the write-in vote, unlike Oklahoma).

Steve has run against McDermott before although he has not had much luck, gathering less than 20% of the votes in both 2006 and 2008.  The 7th District is a largely Democratic District though I believe that the tide in Washington is turning more conservative and I feel that Steve will have much better luck this time around.

I for one am really glad that Steve is running against McDermott again and can't wait to see him kick McDermott's butt in November.

Jim. November is Coming! Are you ready?

Pardon Billy the Kid?

New Mexico Governor Considers Pardon for Billy the Kid

According to this article I found on Fox News, the governor of New Mexico is considering giving Billy the Kid a posthumous pardon.

I have to ask, what possible purpose could this ever serve?

The governor stated that he wants to fulfill the promise that territorial governor Lew Wallace gave to Billy the Kid to give him a pardon.  For those that don't know their history, Governor Wallace offered a pardon to Billy the Kid in return for his testimony against the participants of the old Lincoln County War.

I just don't see the point myself.

Top 3 Films: Laurence Fisburne and Arnold Schwarzenegger

Happy 49th Laurence!

Cadence (1990)

Laurence stars alongside Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen in this movie which is directed by Martin Sheen about an American soldier that is placed in a military jail in which he is the only white and joins forces with them against their racist warden.

Boyz N the Hood (1991)

In this film, directed by John Singleton, Fishburne stars alongside Cuba Gooding Jr and Ice Cube. This movie, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director, is about life in South Central Los Angeles.

The Matrix (1999)

In this enormously popular science fiction film, Fishburne plays the underground resistance leader Morpheus alongside Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano.

This film won Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

Happy 63rd Arnold!

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

In this James Cameron directed sequel to the original Terminator, which was released in 1984, Arnold reprises his role as the Terminator.

In this one, however, instead of trying to kill the main character, he spends the movie trying to protect the main character from another Terminator.

This film also stars Linda Hamilton, who reprises her role as Sarah Connor from the original film, Edward Furlong, and Robert Patrick, as the new Terminator.

Last Action Hero (1993)

In this film, which is directed by John McTiernan (who has also directed Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, Die Hard With a Vengeance, and The 13th Warrior), Arnold plays Jack Slater, an L.A. police detective.

I liked this film for two reasons. One, the character that Arnold plays is almost a spoof of other action movie characters. And two, the soundtrack is pretty amazing. It includes artists such as AC/DC, Alice in Chains, Megadeth, Anthrax, Tesla, and Def Leppard.

True Lies (1994)

James Cameron directed this film in which Arnold plays an agent in a super secret counter-terrorist government agency that has to pose as a regular guy for his family.

It also stars Jamie Lee Curtis as his wife, Tom Arnold as his partner, Tia Carrera, Bill Paxton and Charlton Heston.

Interview with Clark Duffe

Clark Duffe is the Libertarian Party candidate for Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District. He will be running against Independent Dave White, Democratic candidate Billy Coyle and whoever wins the August 24 Republican runoff between Kevin Calvey and James Lankford.

I had a chance to do an interview with Clark and below is the transcript of that interview:

1. Why are you a Libertarian as opposed to being a Republican?

Republicans only go halfway towards freedom. They’re okay on economic and a few other issues, but too often they ignore their own stated values. Consider the 8 years of Bush the Younger, more than half of which they also held both houses of Congress – they spent like teenagers let loose in the mall with mom’s credit card, ending up with a trillion dollar deficit during Bush’s last full fiscal year.

At the same time, the Republicans are officially against personal freedoms I support: Drug legalization for adults, gay marriage, women’s reproductive rights, etc.

I agree with the idea of drug legalization but I'm still up in the air on the whole gay marriage thing and, of course, you know how I feel about "reproductive rights."

2. Why are you running for Congress?

Both the Republicans (conservatives) and Democrats (liberals) in Washington, D.C. are failing the American people. Strangely, even though they’re at each others’ throats, they’re almost working as some sort of evil totalitarian team, with one side acting to strip away half of the individual’s rights, and the other side working to strip away the other half. It’s getting so bad that I can hardly even find anyone to vote for anymore. And since there weren’t any other Libertarians lined up to run, I decided to.

3. Why should the people vote for you as opposed to one of the other candidates?

I won’t be beholden to either the Republicans or the Democrats, and can act individually on each issue, without party pressure. Given the belligerent situation between the Republicans and Democrats in Washington, D.C., I can also act as a sort of go-between, trying to find common ground – Libertarian ground, of course – between them and help form the coalitions necessary to get the U.S. out of the pit the parties have dug us into.

By the way, I am not a hardcore Libertarian, wanting everything yesterday. I am a pragmatic Libertarian: While I stand with our goals, I understand that we need to engineer a soft landing for our nation and its economy. not nosedive into the ground on principle. We’ll have to hold onto at least a modified version of some of what we’ve already got in place for a while until people can adapt to the changes I’ll work for.

4. If you were elected, what would be your priority as a Congressman? That is, what is the #1 top issue that concerns you and how would you address it?

I have my CARDS plan – Cut spending; Audit the Fed; Restore individual rights; Demand government honesty; Secure the borders – but recently I’ve moved “ending our government’s imperial ambitions” to the top of my list. We need to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan except in a diplomatic context. I believe there are members on both sides of the aisle who agree, and will work to bring them together.

I think ending imperial ambitions is quite a noble effort.

5. What are your personal thoughts on term limits and salary caps for elected officials?

In theory, I don’t like term limits. I think they thwart the will of the people, who should be allowed to vote for whomever they wish. On the practical side, however (there’s that pragmatic Libertarianism, again), term limits are probably necessary because of the extreme advantages incumbents have given themselves. Twelve years each in House and Senate sounds about right to me.

As for salary caps, I oppose them. But congress should have to directly vote for any increases, not let some commission do their dirty work for them.

6. Do you support legislation that would make English the official language of the United States? Why or why not?

I don’t support English only. However, governments at all levels should not be required to accommodate foreign language speakers, either. If, say, Oklahoma wants to provide information in other languages, that would be up to it. But it should not be forced to.

7. What sort of ideas do you have for tax reform? How do you feel about the Fair Tax?

I support the Fair Tax. Let’s pass it quickly, and watch it work.

8. How would you go about fixing the failing education system in this country?

We need to remove the federal government from education. Abolish the Department of Education and fire all the bureaucrats. Let the states and local governments take care of education their own children.

Since many school districts are dependent on federal money, however, we might take an intermediate step. We could retain a couple of accountants and a handful of clerks who would distribute cash to the schools on a per capita basis. (I was going to give numbers on how much we could save, but I couldn’t find an accurate, consistent number for the Department of Education’s budget. Suffice to say that for $30 billion, we could fund the small office described above and provide school districts $500 per student, saving at least $50 billion. Maybe as much as $150 billion, give the stimulus money being thrown at education lately.)

9. What ideas do you have to control government spending and are you concerned at all with the percentage of the budget that is allocated to military spending? Do you think the percentage is too much or too little?

The only rational way to control spending is to reduce the size and mission of the federal government; get us back to our Constitutional mandates. Many duties would be returned to the states, which might very well eliminate them as unnecessary. But the states would have to work that out.

The military should not be exempted from these cuts. Getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan and cutting back or eliminating most of the 648 to 798 foreign bases (again, it’s nearly impossible to get accurate numbers even for something as fundamental as this) will naturally reduce the military’s budget to a more sensible level.

The percentage of the budget going to the military means nothing, however; it is the real dollar amount spent that counts. Once the rest of the government is finally trimmed down to size, the military’s percentage of the total spending should actually increase, even as the dollars spent goes down.

10. Do you feel like a third party candidate would ever have a viable change at electing one of its candidates to a major political office?

Third parties can win major elections, but only if given better ballot access. With more candidates on the ballot, the parties’ visibility will increase, leading to membership growth in those parties with viable messages. And that will lead to success in minor elections followed by major ones. This method takes years, if not decades, for a third party to rise to prominence, however..

The real opportunity is if a third party becomes attached to an important major issue, the way the Republican Party did in the 1850’s with slavery. Then a third party can leapfrog to the front of the pack. But again, only if it has reasonable access to the ballot.

11. Any final thoughts?

This campaign is an uphill road for me. I don’t have the instant visibility of being in a major party, or the advantage of straight-party voting. All I can do is reach as many voters as possible with the Libertarian message, and hope people realize that freedom in all things is the best path.

The Reform Party on Immigration

I found this on The Reform Party website.

It is some highlights regarding their position on immigration.

1. Ban the mass importation of temporary foreign workers.

2. Temporary freeze on all immigration, except for spouses and minor children of United States citizens.

3. Use technology and allow the use of the National Guard (or any branch of the armed services) to enhance our border patrol and enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.

4. Make employers liable for insurance that foreign workers produce proof that they are legally allowed to live and work in this country.

5. Assimilate current immigrants by requiring they learn English, American history, and government.

6. Do not allow automatic citizenship to children born on U.S. soil to parents other than legal citizens.

7. No social entitlement givens to anyone that is not a U.S. citizen, including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc...

8. Automatically expel anyone found to be in this country illegally.

Personally, I agree with every one of these points, with the exception of point #3. I'm not really sure if it is the job of the National Guard to protect our borders. Well, maybe...I dunno.

Third Party Spotlight: The Reform Party

The Reform Party was founded in 1995 by H. Ross Perot.

It is composed of conservatives, liberals and centrists.

The main points of its platform include:

1. maintaining a balanced budget, pass a Balanced Budget Amendment, pay down federal debt

2. campaign finance reform, strict limits on campaign contributions and outlaw Political Action Committees

3. enforce existing immigration laws

4. oppose free trade agreements like NAFTA and withdrawal from the WTO

5. term limits on U.S. Representatives and Senators

6. direct election of the United States President by popular vote

7. end corporate welfare

8. eliminate wasteful programs that serve no important national goal

For the most part is stays out of social issues such as abortion and gay rights because the Reform Party believes these issues divide Americans and they would like to focus on the issues that can bring people together.

Notable members of this party have been H. Ross Perot, who ran for President in 1992 and 1996, Pat Buchanan, who ran for President on the Reform ticket in 2000, Ralph Nader, who ran on the Reform ticket in 2004, and Jesse Ventura, who ran (and won) as a Reform Party candidate for Governor of Minnesota.

Here is a link to the Official Website of the Reform Party

The national chairman is David Collision and the party headquarters is in Dallas, Texas.

Although there is a link to a Reform Party of Oklahoma, the site does not list any state officers, only an e-mail address: RPOK@rpusa.info.

Currently, the Reform Parties Candidates include:

Alex Hammer for Governor of Maine.
Rodney Martin for City Council of Porterville, California.
Jeff Rainforth for City Council of Sacramento, California.
Frank Rutherford for Wisconsin State Assembly.

United Nations: Success or Failure?

Is the United Nations a success? | DEBATEitOUT.com

My response?

"I don't think it has been very successful. Look at how many international wars and conflicts have been fought since its inception. I thought the whole point of the U.N. was to keep the world's nations from going to war against each other. If anything, it seems to me that they foster and promote international conflict.

Just my opinion though."

Tancredo joining Constitution Party?

What Is The American Constitution Party, Tom Tancredo's New Home? : NPR

According to the article, Former GOP Congressman Tom Tancredo is leaving his party to run for governor of Colorado as a member of the Constitution Party.

Here are some party platform highlights of the Constitution Party as presented in the article:

- allow state legislatures, not voters, to pick U.S. Senators (basically they want to abolish the 17th Amendment)

- abolish congressional pensions

- abolish the Department of Education, the Department of Energy, the Food and Drug Administration, the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Election Commission

- end foreign aid and participation in groups such as the United Nations

Guess the Quote

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."

Wanna know who said it? He was a general in the armed forces AND was a Republican..............................can you guess?

No cheating now!

How'd I Do?

I posted my endorsement for the primaries on Sunday here on Otter Limits:

Primary Endorsements

So here is how I did with those endorsements...................

Governor. I endorsed Randy Brogdon.
Didn't do so well on that one. Brogdon lost to Mary Fallin by 15 points.

Lieutenant Governor. I endorsed Bernie Adler.
Not surprisingly (to be honest) Adler only got 4.4% of the vote. The winner for the Republican nomination was Todd Lamb.

U.S. Senate. I endorsed Tom Coburn.
No big surprise. Tom took 90% of the votes.

U.S. Congress District 4. I endorsed nobody.
Tom Cole won with 77% of the votes.

U.S. Congress District 5. I endorsed Rick Flanigan.
Rick got less than 2% of the vote and while I am very disappointed, I am only a little surprised. Rick is not part of the Republican "system." Which I thought was to his advantage. I was wrong. The winner of this race will be decided by a runoff in August between Kevin Calvey and James Lankford.

Attorney General. I endorsed Scott Pruitt.
Scott won with 56% of the vote.

State Auditor. I endorsed David Hanigar.
David lost to Gary Jones, 69.57% to 30.43%.

State Treasurer. My endorsement went to Ken Miller.
Ken won with 63% of the vote.

Superintendent of Public Instruction. Janet Barresi had my endorsement.
Janet won with 62%.

Labor Commissioner. My endorsement went to Jason Reese.
Jason lost to Mark Costello by 15 points.

Insurance Commissioner. John Doak had my endorsement.
John trails John Crawford by 2 points. There will be a runoff on August 24.

State Senate District 30. I endorsed Matt Jackson.
Matt Jackson lost pretty badly to David Holt. Holt won with 63%.

State Senate District 42. I endorsed James Lane.
Not surprisingly, Mr Lane was slaughtered by the incumbent Cliff Aldridge, losing by 53 points.

State House District 100. I endorsed David Looby.
Strangely, David trails Elise Hall by 13 points. There will be a runoff election between these two.

Top 3 Films: Kevin Spacey and Jeremy Piven

KEVIN SPACEY

Happy 51st Kevin!

Seven (1995)

Kevin won the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain in this thriller in which he plays a serial killer opposite the stars Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. This movie also featured Gwyneth Paltrow and R. Lee Ermey. This film also won the MTV Movie Award for Best Movie, course, I'm not really sure if that is something to brag about to be honest.

K-Pax (2001)

In this film, which also stars Jeff Bridges, Spacey stars as a mental patient who thinks he is an alien from the planet K-Pax.

Superman Returns (2006)

Spacey was perfect for the role of Lex Luthor in this film. I don't think anybody else could ever play the role of Luthor as well as he did in this film. I would almost really like to see a sequel just so I can see him play Lex again.

This one was directed by Bryan Singer (director of X-Men) and also starred Brandon Routh as Superman, Kate Bosworth as Loin Lane, and Frank Langella as Perry White. All in all, the best casting job in this film was Spacey as Lex Luthor.

I know what you all are thinking. What?!? No American Beauty?!? Truth is I did not like that film. Sure he got the Oscar for Best Actor in that movie and won a buttload of awards including the Oscars for Best Movie, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, blah blah blah. I just honestly did not like the movie all that much.

JEREMY PIVEN

Happy 45th Jeremy!

Judgement Night (1993)

Piven stars alongside Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr, Denis Leary, and Stephen Dorff.

This movie did not do very well financially but I remember seeing this movie in the theater and I also remember the soundtrack to this movie being aaaamaaazing! It paired up hard rock/heavy metal bands with rap bands. For instance, it paired up Helmet and House of Pain on "Just Another Victim" (interestingly enough, Everlast from House of Pain has a small part in this movie); Slayer and Ice-T on "Disorder"; and "Another Body Murdered" with Faith No More and Boo-Ya Tribe;

Anyway, it was a good movie.

PCU (1994)

This movie is like a modern version of National Lampoon's Animal House but in my opinion is actually a better movie. Piven stars as head of a pseudo-fraternity called "The Pit." Also starring in this film was Jon Favreau (who was also the director and starred in Iron Man) and David Spade. There is also a cameo by George Clinton. This film also did not do so well financially......or critically for that matter.

Grosse Point Blank (1997)

In this film starring John Cusack as a professional hitman who goes back to his high school reunion during which he runs into one of his high school chums, Paul, played by Piven. The film also starred Minnie Driver, Dan Aykroyd, Alan Arkin, Joan Cusack, and Hank Azaria.

This film actually did do pretty well financially and was voted 21st greatest comedy of all time by Total Film magazine.

It also boasts an awesome soundtrack. In fact, 2 soundtrack albums were released for this film including songs by Violent Femmes, The Clash, Faith No More, Pete Townshend, The Specials, Echo & the Bunnymen, Pixies, and Joe Strummer, among others.

Skid Row and Faster Pussycat: DoTM

Brogdon or Fallin?

Still having trouble deciding between Randy Brogdon and Mary Fallin?

Here is an interesting comparison between the two gubernatorial candidates:

Brogdon - last 30 years as a businessman;
Fallin - last 20 years as a professional politician.

Brogdon - opposed the Wall Street bailout and considers it unconstitutional;
Fallin - voted for the bailout as a member of Congress

Brogdon - opposes earmark spending;
Fallin - has approved over $40 million in earmark spending

Brogdon - supports local support of schools;
Fallin - supports federal mandates on local schools

Brogdon - wrote legislation to opt-out of Obamacare;
Fallin - supports government-run health care

Still having trouble deciding?

Fallin Exempt from Constitution?

Here is a video of gubernatorial candidate Mary Fallin basically saying that Congress trumps the Constitution.

Primary Endorsements

Here is a list of the folks that I am endorsing in the 2010 primaries here in Oklahoma. Keep in mind I am registered as a Republican so I can only list those in that party since Oklahoma's antiquated election laws do not permit me from voting outside the party I am registered in:

Governor - Randy Brogdon

Lieutenant Governor - Bernie Adler

U.S. Senate - Tom Coburn

U.S. Rep District 4 - I am choosing to vote for neither Republican candidate because I am not impressed with either (and I am very irritated that whoever wins this primary will run in the general election unopposed, hence, they will take the seat...c'mon NOBODY else wanted to run against Tom Cole?!?)

U.S. Rep District 5 - Rick Flanigan (and, as I have stated before, if he does not get the nominated, I will not be voting Republican in the general election).

Attorney General - Scott Pruitt

State Auditor - David Hanigar (I still don't understand why we have to vote on this position. Can't the governor just appoint this position?)

State Treasuer - Ken Miller

Superintendent of Public Instruction - Janet Barresi (another office that could be appointed instead of elected)

Labor Commissioner - Jason Reese

Insurance Commissioner - John Doak

State Senate District 30 - Matt Jackson

State Senate District 42 - James Lane

State House District 100 - David Lobby

I would list my endorsements for other State Representatives but they all the other districts that I would give a rip about are all running un-opposed. Ridiculous!

New Poll: English the Official Language of Oklahoma

This week's poll states the question:

Should English be the Official Language of Oklahoma?

Your choices are:

Yes
No
Not Sure
Don't Care

Oklahoma State Questions in 2010

I decided to post a list of State Questions that will appear on Oklahoma's ballot in November 2010.

SQ 744

This question would add an amendment to the State Constitution that requires that the Legislature fund the state's public schools to at the least the per-pupil average of neighboring states.

Personally, I agree that our public schools are in need of drastic help but I don't think requiring a constitutional amendment to set a certain per-pupil cost is the answer. Perhaps we should start lowering the salaries of the school board administrators and give some of that money to the educators. A little extra money for the teachers themselves would encourage people to choose teaching as a career. I am also not in favor of this because it is exclusively for public schools and leaves out charter schools, which I think are a great way to improve education in our state.

SQ 746

Also known as the Oklahoma Voter Identification Measure, would require a voter to produce proof of identity when they are voting.

I fully support this measure and quite honestly I don't understand why this has not already been enacted.

SQ 747

This measure would add an amendment to the State Constitution that would require term limits for the governor, lieutenant governor, state auditor, attorney general, state treasurer, labor commissioner, state schools superintendent, and insurance commissioner. This amendment would set 8-year lifetime term limits for these offices. Currently, the governor, for instance, cannot serve more than 8 consecutive years but can seek re-election after a 4-year gap.

Not shy about this one. I'm all for it!!

SQ 748

Known as the Oklahoma Reapportionment Commission Measure, this measure proposes a constitutional amendment to reform this particular commission.

Currently, the commission is comprised of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Attorney General, and the State Treasurer. The measure would set it up where the commission is comprised of 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans, appointed by the Governor, the Speaker of the House, and the President Pro Tem of the Senate.

This commission is basically responsible for drawing new legislative district lines.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this commission quite honestly. I would kind of rather see the commission go away. I don't think we need any sort of re-districting.

I guess when it comes time to vote on this I would probably approve it but I don't honestly care either way.

SQ 750

Another proposed constitutional amendment. This one would lower the percentage of signatures required to propose a constitutional amendment from 15% to 10%.

I would probably vote against this measure. 15% is a decent percentage in my opinion to propose a change to the State Constitution.

SQ 751

This measure to approve an amendment to the State Constitution would simply make English the official language of the State of Oklahoma.

No secrets here. I'm all in favor of this!

SQ 752

Referred to as The Judicial Nominating Commission Act.

This would add 2 members to the Judicial Nomination Commission.

What this commission does is choose people to nominate for judge is there is a vacancy and sends those names to the Governor. Then the Governor picks someone to fill the vacancy out of those three. Currently, there are 13 members on the commission.

Honestly, I don't care about this commission and really don't understand why the governor himself (or herself) can't pick someone to fill the vacancy themselves? And aren't judges here in Oklahoma elected? If so, shouldn't the voters choose someone to fill that vacancy?

I think I would oppose this measure.

SQ 754

This is referred to as the No Mandated State Expenditures Act.

From what I have read about this, it states that the State Legislature can't be required to make expenditures for any function of government using a predetermined formula of any kind.

Huh?

I read some more about it but still could not make any sense of it so with that in mind, I vote to oppose it because it makes no sense.

SQ 755

The title of this one disturbs me: The Oklahoma Sharia Law Amendment.

This proposed constitutional amendment requires our courts rely on federal and state laws when handing down decisions concerning cases and prohibits them from using Sharia law.

Well, I approve of this measure and find it disturbing that we need a constitutional amendment to require this.

SQ 756

Also referred to as the Oklahoma Health Care Freedom Amendment, this proposes an amendment to the State Constitution and would essentially opt out of any federally-mandated health care provisions (like Obamacare).

Hmmmm.......

SQ 757

This is referred to as the Oklahoma Rainy Day Fund Amendment.

It is a request to increase the amount of money that would go into the state's reservation funds, or "rainy day" funds.

Currently, the amount is 10% and this would increase it to 15%.

Personally, I like the proposal but I do not think that now is the time for it to go into effect. I would say that I would vote in favor of it once we get out of this economic crisis and get our budget balanced here in the State. But, although I am going to vote against it, I would not be terribly upset if it were approved.

Big Fat Liar!!!!

Senator Patty Murray is her name and lying to the voters is her game.

On the Washington state Online Voters Guide she states
"I voted to end taxpayer bailouts and put money back in your pockets..."

Hogwash!!!!!

Want to know the truth?

Remember the TARP bill? The Troubled Asset Relief Program? Commonly referred to as $700 billion mortgage bailout bill?

Well, take a big guess how she voted for it?

A big ole YEA!

How's that for a politician telling the truth?

Get Murray out of office and vote for Dino Rossi for U.S. Senate!!!

We Don't Need Calvey

Why I Don't Support Kevin Calvey

These are actually not my reasons specifically. This is a blog post that is a reprint of a post on Rick Flanigan's website.

Here is a link to the article itself:

The Reason I Can Not Support Kevin Calvey

Here are some highlights of it:

On Immigration:
"Mr. Calvey talks tough on illegal immigration but.....he authored HB1559 which granted in-state tuition benefits to illegals...[and] he voted yes for HB1409 which would have required the Department of Public Safety to issue Driver's License exams in foreign languages."

On Career Politicians:
"Mr. Calvey said...the country can not afford 'Career Politicians'.....yes.....has run for or held public office in every election cycle since 1996 with the exception of 2008. 14 years as a politician....in my opinion makes him a career politician....

Personally, I have to agree with Mr. Flanigan that I can not support a candidate that plays politics by saying one thing while their voting record specifically says the exact opposite. Typical politician. We don't need him in Congress.

If you remember, he stated in an interview he did here on Otter Limits that he was the only candidate to serve our country in a combat zone but failed to mention that Independent candidate Dave White has also served in a combat zone. I'll give Mr. Calvey the benefit of the doubt on that one though and assume that he was referring only to his Republican opponents.

But on his voting record I just can't bring myself to support this candidate.
