Green Day: The Videos

Here are some live videos for you to enjoy:

Top 3 Films: Jack Black

Happy 41st B-Day Jack!

High Fidelity (2000)

This film was based on a novel by Nick Horby and also stars John Cusack , Iben Hjejle, Todd Louiso, Catherine-Zeta Jones, Lisa Bonet, Sara Gilbert, Lili Taylor, Joan Cusack, Tim Robbins and has a cameo by Bruce Springsteen.

Jack plays Barry, one of the main characters co-workers in Rob's (John Cusack) record store. His portrayal of the this obnoxious music geek was hilarious and he was perfect for the character.

The soundtrack to it is also really cool. It includes songs by 13th Floor Elevators, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, The Beta Band, and Elvis Costello.

You might already know this if you read this blog regularly, but just in case you don't, this is one of my all-time favorite movies. Chicago magazine ranked it #1 in a list of Top 40 movies filmed in Chicago.

You can read more stuff about this movie at its IMDB Article.

Shallow Hal (2001)

In this film directed by the Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber, Theres Something About Mary, etc..), Black plays the super materialistic Hal, who is hypnotized by Tony Robbins into seeing the inner beauty of things.

It also stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Jason Alexander.

School of Rock (2003)

This one was directed by Richard Lanklater, who also previous directed Dazed and Confused.

Black plays guitar player Dewey Finn who ends up becoming a substitute teacher for a prestigious prep school and teaches his class about rock n roll.

It also stars Joan Cusack as the prep school's principal, Mike White, and Sarah Silverman.

The soundtrack to this movie includes songs by The Who, The Doors, Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Black Keys, and The Ramones.

Jack won an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance and got a Golden Globe nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy.

Top 3 Films: Paul Reubens

Happy 58th Pee Wee!

Mystery Men (1999)

This comic book film, which actually is based on a comic book put out by Dark Horse Comics called Flaming Carrot Comics. It is about a group of super-heroes with less than impressive superpowers.

In this one Reubens stars as The Spleen, a "hero" with super-powered flatulence.

It also stars Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria, Janeane Garofalo, Geoffrey Rush, Greg Kinnear and Tom Waits.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)

This is the movie that started it all! This is NOT the TV series. The movie is way funnier than the TV series. Although, that is actually second hand knowledge because I've never actually watched the television series.

Reubens plays Amily, the assistant to the head vampire, who is played by Rutger Hauer.

This film was mostly just a vehicle for Luke Perry, who was popular at the time because of Beverly Hills 90210, but it was still a decent movie.

It also starred Kristy Swason as Buffy, Donald Sutherland, Hilary Swank, David Arquette, Stephen Root, Thomas Jane and a small role played by Ben Affleck.

Pee-Wees Big Adventure (1985)

Can't have a Paul Reubens film list without mentioning the Pee Wee Herman movie. C'mon!!

It was filmed by Tim Burton (which I actually did not know until I starting writing this article) and Reubens played the main character, obviously.

Green Day Concert Review

There is now a new sub genre of rock music. It is called Arena Punk (or Stadium Punk) and Green Day have that market cornered!

Last night, Mandy and I drove down to Dallas to see Green Day at the SuperPages.com Center (formerly the Smirnoff Center, formerly the Starplex Ampitheater).

The opening act was AFI. I have to admit that I'm not the biggest AFI fan. I'm just not all that impressed with them and this show did not make a believer in me. I was actually glad that they did not play very long.

I have to say that this is by far the BEST concert that I have EVER been to. Now, with most people, I have to admit that this is not saying much. But I have seen, quite literally, too many concerts to even attempt to count. Notwithstanding, this concert was definitely the very very best I have ever seen.

Billie Joe is by far one of the best showmen in rock music today. He is one of the most interactive that I've seen and while most bands tend to shy away from letting people onstage (and usually make sure they get thrown off once they have made it that far), Billie Joe not only encouraged the crowd to get onstage but actually pulled some of them up himself and let them sing with him.

In fact, at one point in the concert when the band played their breakthrough hit "Longview," he got 3 different people up on stage with them and had them do a little singing contest. Come to think of it, Billie himself did not sing any of the song himself. At the end of the song, a little 12 year old girl won the singing contest and Billie presented her with the guitar he was playing at the time. Quite amazing!

In my opinion, Green Day is the ONLY punk band in existence that could be away with the abundance of pyrotechnics and the huge light show that they put on last night. The backdrop behind the drum riser was amazing and I really had a hard time keeping my eyes off of it.

On top of how great the show was visually, the music of course was amazing and this band really gives you your money's worth. They went onstage around 7:40pm and did not stop playing until after 11pm!!! 3 hours worth of music! Again, amazing!

I think if you ever get a chance to go see this band, take it. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for the next one to come around.

Below is a list of the songs that they played (yeah, I was typing the song titled into my iPhone while the concert was going on, I'm a nerd, LoL!) and in parentheses the album that they came off of.

  1. Song of the Century (21st Century Breakdown)
  2. 21st Century Breakdown (21st Century Breakdown)
  3. Know Your Enemy (21st Century Breakdown)

Should other countries be allowed to imprison U.S. citizens? | DEBATEitOUT.com

My response:

"...If you go to someone else's country, you should follow their rules. And if you don't know their rules, find out what they are before you set foot in their country.

People need to get rid of this sense of entitlement that they seem to have. The fact that you are an American citizen gives you rights in THIS country. Not in another country. Citizenship is designed to give you rights and privileges while you reside in the of which you are a citizen. It is not designed as some diplomatic immunity crap where you can go to someone else's country and automatically become an ******* over there.

You break the law. You face the consequences. Grow up!"

P.O.D. - DoTM

P.O.D. is a Christian metal band from San Diego, California. They formed in 1992. P.O.D. stands for Payable On Death.

I like some of their stuff but a lot of their stuff I just can't seem to absorb. Their music is somewhere along the lines of rap-metal, most of which I don't like. In some ways, they remind me a bit of a toned down Christian version of Rage Against the Machine, only the vocalist sings more than he raps. I dunno, you can listen to them and judge for yourself, I'll put some videos up.

Currently Reading: Hulk Graphic Novels

TITLE(s): Red Hulk (Hulk Volume #1); Red and Green (Hulk Volume #2); Hulk No More (Hulk Volume #3)

AUTHOR: Jeph Loeb (artwork by Ed McGuinness, Arthur Adams and Frank Cho)

PUBLISHED BY: Marvel Comics

YEAR PUBLISHED: 2009

Green Lantern: Rebirth was a pretty quick read. Really great story though.

I actually have already read Hulk Volumes 1 and 2 and just now decided to start Volume 3 but I figured I would add the 2 earlier ones to this post because they are part of the same storyline.

Jeph Loeb does some pretty cool work for comics. He is probably one of my favorite comic book writers actually. He has written such Batman classics such as The Long Halloween and it's follow up Dark Victory, as well as Hush. He also started the Superman/Batman series. In addition to Batman, he wrote the miniseries Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America. In addition to writing comics, he wrote the script for the movies Teen Wolf and Commando.

Quote of the Day (Aug 22)

"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power...Green Lantern's light."

No, I didn't finish the Kurt Vonnegut book that I last posted (Look at the Birdie). Actually, I barely got it started.

I decided instead to take a short break from "real" fiction and read some graphic novels for a while instead. Actually, I have been reading some graphic novels lately anyway but just haven't been posting them.

This is another graphic novel to get me all geared up for the Green Lantern movie coming out next year. It comes out in June 2011 by the way. Argh, I don't want to wait that long!!

History of the Green Lanterns

This is a short history of those who have held the title of Green Lantern in DC Comics. I'm doing this to kind of gear up for the Green Lantern movie coming out next year, which stars Ryan Reynolds.

Alan Scott

This was the "Golden Age" Green Lantern. Golden Age, by the way, refers to the era in comic books that lasted from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. It was during this era, where other heroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel and Captain America began.

Anyway, so Alan Scott's origin goes like this. A green meteor fell to earth thousands of years ago and eventually formed itself into a green lantern. Scott, a railroad engineer, gained possession of the lamp and gave him incredible powers.

Hal Jordan

Hal Jordan is the "Silver Age" Green Lantern. The Silver Age of Comics lasted from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s.

Hal is, in my opinion, the more recognized Green Lantern in comics and he is the character upon which the live action movie will be based.

Hal Jordan was a test pilot that came across the lantern when an alien named Abin Sur searched the galaxy looking for someone honest to take his place as a Green Lantern and crash landed on Earth and found Hal.

Guy Gardner

One of two of the "Bronze Age" Green Lanterns. The Bronze Age was the time between 1971 and 1985.

Guy Gardner was a social welfare caseworker and later a teacher for children with disabilities. As his origin states, he was Abin Sur's 2nd choice to replace him as a Green Lantern, thus he became Hal Jordan's "backup."

John Stewart

The other "Bronze Age" Green Lantern.

John Stewart was an architect who temporarily replaced Guy Gardner when the later ended up a coma for a while. He also took over as Green Lantern temporarily when the next Green Lantern, Kyla Rayner, left Earth.

Kyle Rayner

The Green Lantern of the "Modern Age." The Modern Age, which is also known as the "Iron Age" takes place between the mid-1980s and present day.

Kyle Rayner was an artist who becomes a Green Lantern when one of the Guardians of the Universe asks him to become one.

Kyle Rayner is my 2nd favorite Green Lantern, after Hal Jordan.

Jade

Jade is the first female Green Lantern from the planet Earth. Her real name is Jennifer-Lynn Hayden. She is the daughter of former Green Lantern Alan Scott.

OTHER INTERESTING INFORMATION

Guardians of the Universe

The Guardians were an immortal extraterrestrial race that founded and led the Green Lantern Corps [see below]. They are short and blue. They kind of look a little like the Oompa Loompas.

They are originally from a planet called Maltus.

Green Lantern Corps

The Green Lantern Corps are basically an intergalactic police force. They spend their time patrolling the universe, righting wrongs and what not.

The Guardians originally created a force of robots called Manhunters to enforce order in the universe. The Manhunters eventually rebelled against their masters and decided that the only was to achieve real order in the universe was to destroy all life.

After this, the Guardians decided that their police force was to consist instead of living beings and created the Green Lantern Corps. To assist them, they also created the Power Rings, which allowed their wearers to project green beams of energy that the wearer could conjure into any shape or size, only limited by their imagination.

Sinestro

Sinestro is a former Green Lantern and former mentor of Hal Jordan. He was eventually banished by the Guardians to an alternate universe for abusing his power. He was given a yellow power ring by a group called the Weaponers who hated the Guardians. After getting the ring he was sent back to his own universe. He then became a super villain. He was voted #15 in the IGNs Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time.

Bill Finger

Comic book writer born in February 1914 in New York City, Bill was an uncredited co-creator (along with Bob Kane) of Batman. For the purposes of this article, though, he is the co-creator (along with artist Martin Nodell) of the Green Lantern.

Martin Nodell

Nodell was a comic book artist born in November 1915 in Philadelphia. He created the design for the character that would become Alan Scott, the "Golden Age" Green Lantern.

John Broome

Broome was a comic book writer that created the Guardians of the Universe.

Gil Kane

Kane, born in April 1926, was a comic book artist that co-created the Hal Jordan Green Lantern.

Darryl Banks/Ron Marz

Banks is a comic book artist that co-crated, along with writer Ron Marz, the Kyle Rayner Green Lantern.

Danzig: DoTM

Danzig is a band, formed by former Misfits/Samhain vocalist, Glenn Danzig. They formed in 1987 from the ashes of Samhain in Lodi, New Jersey.

Musically, I really like this band's stuff. If you can get past the whole pretending to be a devil worshipper thing, they really are worth a listen....although I actually stopped listening to their music after their 5th album.

You can read more about this band at the following websites:

Nader to Speak in Oklahoma City!

Former Presidential candidate and political activist Ralph Nader will be in Oklahoma City on September 8 to talk about Ballot Access Reform.

You can find more information about it here.

"Oklahomans are growing increasingly uneasy about the Republican / Democratic Party duopoly, which acts to commercialize elections, gerrymander districts to repress competition, and preclude third party candidates from ballot access. Democratic theory, which relies on the selection of a candidate from competing ideologies, withers and dies when only one name appears on the ballot, as in 53 out of 125 Oklahoma state legislative races this year.

Ralph Nader wrote his first article on Republican and Democratic tactics of impeding competition from third parties in the Harvard Law Record in 1958. Little could he have known that conditions would substantially worsen over the next 50 years.

Oklahoma is widely recognized as having the most restrictive ballot access laws in the country, despite a large majority of its citizens supporting ballot access reform. Despite more than 40% of legislative incumbents drawing no challengers, it would require a petition with roughly 100,000 signatures for a third party to get a candidate on the ballot."

The speaking engagement will be at the Oklahoma City Marriott on NW Expressway in Oklahoma City. It starts at 7pm on Wednesday, September 8. You should definitely try to be there if you care at all.

How About an Open Primary System for Oklahoma?

In yesterday's live chat with the Mary Fallin campaign, and in my personal interview with Mary Fallin last Thursday, I was asking about the thought of changing Oklahoma's primary system from a closed primary system to an open primary system.

The response was essentially that they don't think the system in place is broken and they have no plans to try to change it.

The fact is, they don't think it is broken is because it is working for their particular party quite well. They are partisan politicians and would rather stick with the status quo than make changes in the primary system and that would actually benefit the voters, instead of the candidates.

Here is some background for those of you that don't know what I'm talking about.

Oklahoma currently has a closed primary system. What that means is that when you go to register to vote, you have to selected a party. Republican, Democrat, or Independent.

If you choose Republican, you can only vote in the Republican primary for Republican candidates. If you choose Democrat, you can only vote in the Democratic primary for Democratic candidates. If you choose Independent, you are screwed, you can't vote in either primary for any of the candidates.

So what if you are a Republican, and like one of the Democratic candidates? Or what if you're a Democrat that likes one of the Republican candidates? Too bad, you have to vote in the primary that you have chosen.

And what if you are an Independent? Oh well, you'll have to wait until the general election and vote for one of the two people that you have no choice in selecting whether or not they were in the general election to begin with.

Besides Oklahoma, there are 25 other states that have a close primary system. They are:
Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.

In California, West Virgina and Utah, however, only the Republican primaries are closed. The Democrats also allow unaffiliated voters to participate in their primary. And in Rhode Island, if you register as Independent you can vote in the primary of the party of your choice.

On the flip side, in an open primary system, such as the one they have in Washington state, when you go to register to vote, you are not asked what party you wish to register with. You just register.

So when it is primary time, you vote on the candidate that you prefer, regardless of their party affiliation, or non-affiliation as the case might be.

Once the votes are counted, the two people that got the most votes in the primary, go on to the general election. So in theory, you could end up with 2 people that prefer the Republican party in the general election, or 2 Democrats, or even 2 Independent candidates (although I seriously doubt the later will happen any time soon).

I am, as if you can't already tell, in favor of the open primary system. I am going to start a campaign to change the primary system in Oklahoma from a closed one to an open one. Once the general election is over with and the state legislators have been decided, I will start with an e-mail and letter bomb campaign to the state legislators to find out which of our elected officials would support this type of change. If I don't get much response, I will continue e-mailing and then start with the phone calls. I will be heard and I will fight for this.

Of course, I get the feeling that my efforts will be futile. The closed primary system as it stands, as I said, works way to well for the Republican and Democratic parties in our state right now and neither of those parties will be willing to give up the power that it gives them. So for every e-mail or phone I make to a legislator, the parties will make 2 or 3 to oppose my efforts. However, anything worth doing is not easy so I'll keep doing it either until we can change the system...or I realize that it is a completely dead effort.

If any of my readers would like to talk more about this, or would like to help me out with getting this changed, just shoot me an e-mail at otter272@gmail.com and we can discuss it.

Marc Romain Campaigns Against War on Drugs

Recent find on the Third Party and Independent Daily blog

NY: Libertarian Candidate for Congress Running Against the Failed War on Drugs

Here is a quote from the article that was said by Mr. Romain:
"I'm running my campaign against the war on drugs. The whole drug war doesn't make sense."

If I were living in this guy's district, I would probably vote on him based on this campaign strategy.

In case anyone reading this does not know or understand my thoughts about the War on Drugs, here are a few links to some articles on this blog:

Top 3 Films: Robert Redford and Edward Norton

ROBERT REDFORD

Happy 74th Birthday Robert!

The Natural (1984)

This film, directed by Barry Levinson, was about a fictional baseball player named Roy Hobbs, played by Redford.

It also starred Glen Close, Kim Basinger, Wilford Brimley, Michael Madson, Joe Don Baker and Robert Duvall.

Spy Game (2001)

This spy film which also stars Brad Pitt was directed by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, The Last Boy Scout, True Romance, Crimson Tide, etc.). Redford plays CIA agent Nathan Muir who spends the entire movie detailing his past association with Pitt's character Tom Bishop, who was caught trying to break someone out of a Chinese prison.

The Last Castle (2001)

In this film, Redford plays an Army General, Eugene Irwin, who is sentenced to a military prison for violating a presidential order.

It is directed by Rod Lurie and also stars James Gondolfini (Tony Soprano) as the prison warden and Mark Ruffalo as a fellow inmate.

This is a great film and anyone that has not seen it should go rent it very soon.

EDWARD NORTON

Happy 41st Ed!

American History X (1998)

Norton stars as Derek Vinyard, a former neo-Nazi skinhead who is jailed for killing 2 black men and while there goes through a transformation.

The films also starts Edward Furlong as Derek's brother Danny who longs to be just like his brother, Beverly D'Angelo as Derek and Danny's mother, and Avery Brooks as Bob Sweeney, principal of Danny's school.

Edward was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role but lost to Roberto Benigni for his role in Life is Beautiful..............yeah, my reaction was the same? Who? What?

Fight Club (1999)

This movie was kind of freaky, but in a good way. It was based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk. I tried reading the novel but couldn't really follow what the hell was going on in there. It was even freakier than the damn movie.

Anyway, Norton plays this guy (they never give his name) that starts bouncing around different support groups and ends up meeting "another person" named Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt.

The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Good movie. Really good movie. But the main reason that this movie is on this list is because of the AMAZING performance that Edward Norton did as Bruce Banner.

In my opinion, no body has ever played Banner as well as Norton did. Ever! Not Bill Bixby. Definitely not Eric Bana.

This movie is not a sequel to the 2003 movie Hulk in which Bana plays the character but it is a reboot of the franchise (mostly because the 2003 film sucked so bad that Marvel Studios bought the movie rights from Universal Pictures so they could re-do it).

So anyway, besides Norton this movie also stars Liv Tyler as Betty Ross (I actually liked Jennifer Connelly in the role better in the other Hulk movie), Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky, who becomes Abomination, and William Hurt as General Ross (I liked Sam Elliott in the role better than Hurt). Lou Ferrigno does the voice of the Hulk and has a short cameo as a college security guard.

No awards on this one but the film did rank #1 at the box office its opening weekend.

New Yorkers Oppose Ground Zero Mosque

This does not surprise me a bit.

According to a poll taken by Siena College, 63% oppose to the project planned to build a Muslim cultural center near Ground Zero in downtown New York City.

However, and I think the same way, most of the people surveyed, 64% in fact, state that they think the group trying to build this mosque is protected by the Constitution to build it, even though they still oppose it.

Personally, I think they do have a Constitutional right to build their mosque where they want but it seems to me that if they are trying to score points for American-Islam relations, they would have a little more common decency and empathize with the people whose family members were lost in the 9/11 attacks.

The problem is, we are dealing with an administration that would rather apologize for all the atrocities that Americans have done against their people than stand up for its citizens.

The timing is perfect for them though. Could you imagine if they would have tried to build this thing while George W was still President? You probably told them to go eff themselves. LoL!

Here is the USA Today article where I found this information:

Should Senators be banned from becoming Lobbyists?

Should they?

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Chris Coons thinks so according to this Huffington Post article:

Chris Coons, Dem Senate Candidate Wants Lifetime Ban on Senators Becoming Lobbyists.

Not only does he want to ban Senators from getting jobs as Washington lobbyists, he wants to CUT pay for Senators by 10%!

Wow! This guy has some balls. It is things like this that, in my personal opinion, get people elected. That is, if they can get their name out there.

Coons is currently running for Joe Biden's old Senate seat from the state of Delaware.

He says:
"People are mad, and people really question whether Washington is working for them. Americans are willing to sacrifice, but that's just not what they're seeing out of D.C........There's a broad concern [that] lobbyists and special interests have too much control over the outcomes."

Chris Coons is running against the Republican Mike Castle.

As far as the question goes, Should U.S. Senators be banned from serving as lobbyists? I think they should. I think once they have done their civic duty and served their country as a legislator, they should leave office gracefully and go back into the private sector.

The Thermals: DoTM

Today, I'm coinciding the band that I am writing about with one of the band that Dave is featuring on his "Which Song Should the Spy Play? poll, The Thermals.

The Thermals started in Portland, Oregon. They formed in 2002. They are similar, musically, to bands such as Built to Spill and The Hold Steady. Basically just good ole standard indie rock.

Live Chat With the Fallin Campaign

This is a transcript of a live chat that was conducted with Alex Weintz, Communication Director for the Mary Fallin for Governor Campaign. All the questions that are listed were asked by me, except where noted:

I’m curious. What news source do you follow? That is, where do you go to keep up on current events and what not?

A lot of Oklahoma papers. Obviously, the Oklahoman, the World, etc. But she also checks out blogs.

What about television news? Does she watch Fox News more than CNN for instance?

Fox News all the way. In fact, I’ve been working for Mary for 3-4 years and rarely does she not have Fox News on.

[Andrew Griffin from Red Dirt Report]: Does she listen to any talk radio?

Yes. She's been doing interviews with Reid Mullins on KTOK for years and she lives in OKC so that's something she listens to frequently. Although as we travel around the state she listens to talk radio wherever we are we spend a lot of time in the car and on the road, so she listens to plenty of radio.

On the road we frequently tune in Rush.

Basically, as a communications team, and as a candidate, we are trying to hit every possible kind of media -- radio, TV, print, online

How about NPR? Does she ever tune into that?

She listens to that occasionally.

I did an interview with Mary last week. I have a question about an answer that she gave me. She said that for too long Oklahoma has been without a leader whose focus has been on job growth and fiscal discipline. Is she saying that Brad Henry has failed us on those fronts?

She wasn't saying that Brad Henry has "failed." But the fact of the matter is, Mary is going to treat job growth and economic development as her number one priority, and that’s going to be where she spends a lot of time and energy. Could we have had more energetic leadership on that front? Yes, sure.

[Andrew Griffin] An issue I have been following is the state's tax credit system. There have been some real problems with it - i.e. Altus bank, Quartz Mtn. Aviation. If elected governor, would Mary call for an investigation of these tax credit issues?

Basically when it comes to tax credits Mary's policy is that everything needs to work and everything needs to be open and transparent. So if something is getting a tax credit we need to know why and it needs to be generating jobs and helping the economy. If it's not accomplishing that than it is not a worthwhile investment.

[Michael Bates from BatesLine] How do you knock on doors for a statewide campaign?

You get a lot of volunteers…and you sweat a lot.

[Michael Bates] Would Mary oppose further transferable tax credits?

Again, Mary supports reviewing the system and making it as open, transparent and effective as possible. If tax credits are being transferred in a way that is not helpful to the economy and not open and transparent, then she will absolutely address that. She does support reviewing the system from top to bottom.

[Andrew Griffin] Another question I had has to do with the turnpike system. It seems to me that economic development is stunted along our state turnpikes and one wonders why this is the case. Exits are few and McDonald's is the only option out in the middle of nowhere. Does Mary see this as a problem?

Well, obviously Mary wants there to be as much development as possible along the turnpikes. Do you know why there are only McDonalds, besides the fact that Big Macs are awesome?

[Andrew] I assume it was some bidding war. People zip on by many communities, not knowing they are there because of these hermetically-sealed highways called turnpikes. I don't understand why there isn't more of a debate about the turnpike system in the state. I suspect it has to do with the attitude I got from the OTA sign engineer who told me "Well, that's the way it's always been done."

Obviously, a central theme of our campaign is jobs. That's going to be Mary's number one priority, along with balancing the budget. We think Mary has the experience, the work ethic and the vision to bring more jobs to the state, to pull us out of our current budget mess and to move the state forward. We're also going to be talking about the fact that Mary is the ONLY candidate in the race who offers something different from the Washington Way and who will stand up to the Obama administration.

Another question I asked Mary was in regards to the open primary system that they have in states such as Washington state versus the closed primary system we have here in Oklahoma....she stated that the problem with an open primary system was that, basically, a Democrat could mess with the candidates for the Republican party and vice versa. However, with an open primary system, there would be no registering of parties, as they do in Washington State, and it seems to work pretty well. Do you think she would favor such a system in Oklahoma?

I've talked to Mary about that. Basically, she is not alarmed with the way our current primary system operates, but she would certainly be open to reviewing it to make it as fair as possible and to increase participation. So to answer your question: would she be open to changing it? Yes. But that is not going to be a central focus of our campaign. She would be open to reviewing the system to make sure it is fair. She does not have any plans to change it as of now.

Oh I know it isn't something you would highlight in the campaign or anything like that. It just seems to me that the direction this country is headed, it is all about partisan politics and whose "side" is going to gain leadership. It seems to me than an open primary system, where nobody registers for a particular party, could help, not necessarily end it, but slow it down a bit. I mean, I know there are more important things for her to concern herself with and what not but this is an area that concerns me a bit.

[Michael Bates] To elaborate on my question about knocking doors: I know that state legislative candidates try to knock on every likely voter's door at least once. Obviously you can't do that for the whole state, so how does a statewide candidate decide where to personally knock doors?

You are right that we can’t physically knock on every door in the state and certainly Mary can't do that personally. We do have lists that help us target which doors to knock based on party registration, voter frequency etc. But when Mary personally knocks doors it usually revolves around an event in a particular area. And we depend on the local GOP organizations and our state party to support us and the other statewide candidates.

There are some communities that just want to know that, hey, Mary took the time to come to our parade and then knock on some doors afterwards. It's not even about how many or whose doors, just that she took an hour to do it and to get out into the community. And she'll do that and we hope the word gets out.

[Michael] What kind of response are you getting in Southeast Oklahoma?

I think we're getting a good response for a number of reasons. First, Mary works hard and she gets out there. She isn't just sitting at a desk in OKC or Tulsa and they appreciate that. Second, like you said, they are really conservative there and despite the fact that it's a Democratic area they do not approve of the policies coming out of Washington and the Obama Administration. Mary recently was in McAlester for a couple of events, including touring a homeless shelter the community is working together to build.

And in this race, Mary is the candidate offering something different from the Obama Administration.

So would you say that Jari Askins is a female Obama? LoL!

[Conservative Pup] Hi, sorry to be late. Pup here from Conservative Pup. How will Mary go about fighting the individual mandate to buy health care insurance, and how would she present that to Oklahomans who are strongly "in favor" of the health care bill, because they don't understand it?

First, I think we are fortunate that most Oklahomans aren’t in favor of the health care bill. It's one of the least popular policies to come out of Washington in decades, for good reason.

One of the first things Mary is going to do is to join the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the health care law. In fact, she's already asked Henry, Askins and Edmondson to do that and they have refused.

She’s also asking people to support Senator Brogdon’s opt-out clause which will be on the ballot this November.

Won’t that also depend on who ends up being our state’s next Attorney General?

Good point Otter. We figure a conservative GOP attorney general would be helpful in the cause. It will help to have a Republican AG but it’s important to note that the legislature passed a bill that would have signed the state onto the lawsuit and it was vetoed by Governor Henry. Another thing that Henry vetoed that Mary would have signed is open carry.

I don't mean to sound a bit crass here but that comment about having a Republican AG, sounds a bit like you are encouraging straight party-line voting. Do the Democrats have absolutely nothing to offer in this state? I only say that because not all Democrats are...Obamaites. For instance, our own Congressman Dan Boren seems a bit more conservative than your average Democrat.

I absolutely agree. I think it’s important to vote for candidates who are conservative, who will help to create jobs and improve the economy, and who are willing to take a stand against Washington and the Obama Administration. Period.

And regarding Democrats, Mary has always said that she thinks that conservative Democrats and independents will support her because they share the same values: a commitment to fiscal responsibility and limited government, a respect for the constitution, and support of traditional family values.

So we aren't writing off Democrats or independents, and certainly they will be an important part of this campaign.

Speaking of campaigns and Independents...sort of......how does Mary feel about public financing of political campaigns?

The honest answer is we don’t know where Mary stands on public financing. No one has ever asked that before.

Overall, how does Mary think Governor Henry did as a governor?

Mary gets this question a lot and she usually says something like "I think Brad Henry is a nice guy" and then leaves it at that. But I do know that Mary plans to be more active in creating jobs and focusing on the economy -- and obviously they have different opinions about health care, immigration, guns, etc

What does Mary think about a school voucher system here in Oklahoma?

Mary supports school choice and charter schools and is absolutely in favor of anything that helps kids escape failing schools and empowers parents.

We were happy to have Jeb Bush here last week campaigning for us. He has done a great job reforming Florida’s school system.

What type of reforms did he put in place there in Florida that would work for our kids here in Oklahoma?

Well the big thing I think was to implement a system where good work was rewarded and there were consequences for underperforming. So teachers who did well were rewarded financially and those that consistently underperformed were not and in some cases found new professors.

[Conservative Pup] How were those results measured?

Good question Conservative Pup. Are we talking about a No Child Left Behind type system?

Results in Florida were measured by standardized tests that were designed by the state. Mary is in favor of local control and she has no plans to adopt the entire Florida system without changing it to suit Oklahoma, but we do need some sort of system in place to make sure our kids can read and write and do math. And if teachers are consistently producing students that excel in these areas, Mary thinks they should be rewarded. If they are producing students who underperform, they should be held accountable.

Do you think that school administrators in our state are getting paid too much? It seems like that particular issue is a source of tension with some people I have spoken with.

Mary has said that we spend too much money on administrative overhead and don't get enough cash into the classrooms where it actually helps our kids. She is definitely in support of ways of voluntarily consolidating administrative services and reducing expenses that way
