Quote(s) of the Day (Sept 30)

"Setting a good example is a far better way to spread ideals than through force of arms."

"You want to get rid of drug crime in this country? Fine, let's just get rid of all the drug laws."

- - Ron Paul

It is Coming!

I just wanted to let everyone know that hockey season starts in one week!

The Chicago Blackhawks will be playing their first game against Colorado (at Colorado) on Thursday, October 7.

The Vancouver Canucks will be playing their first game (at home) against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday October 9.

I don't really care what everyone else is doing but if you are interested you can view the complete schedules at ESPN.com.

Update to Big 12 Roundup Week 4

I forgot to post the individual stats like I had meant to do when I posted the Week 4 Big 12 Roundup.

So I updated that article and am providing a link to it here so I don't have to write the post again.

Enjoy!

Currently Reading: The Revolution: A Manifesto

TITLE: The Revolution: A Manifesto

AUTHOR: Ron Paul

YEAR PUBLISHED: 2008

PUBLISHER: Grand Central Publishing

Okay, so I did not get very far in that last book (The Naked Gospel). I got somewhat bored with it fairly quickly. Call it my ADD kicking into overdrive.

I decided to pick this one up and read it instead. It is written by Texas Congressman and former Presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Quote of the Day (Sept 29)

"...Democracy is simply two wolves and a lamb voting on what is for dinner...."

- - Mark Hinkle, Chairman of the Libertarian Party

Misfits: DoTM

I can't believe I have never done a DoTM on these guys...or at least in my search here on Otter Limits I have not been able to find one. What a tragedy!

Anyway....

The Misfits are a horror punk band that formed in Lodi, New Jersey in 1977. Originally, they were only together for about 6 years but their impact on music is legendary. The band has spawned several other bands such as Samhain, Danzig (which I kind of think is Samhain with just a different name), Kryst the Conqueror, and Undead, perhaps others.

Quite a few people have been members of this band at one time or another. Here is a link to a list of everyone who has ever been in this band:

Misfits Band Members, Past and Present

You can read more about them at their official website:

Misfits Official Website

This discography will consist only of studio albums.

Top 3 Films: Janeane Garafalo

Happy 46th Birthday Janeane!

Reality Bites (1994)

This film was directed by Ben Stiller (and produced by Danny DeVito) and included a slew of (at the time) lesser known actors such as Winona Ryder, Ben Stiller, Ethan Hawke, Steve Zahn, Joe Don Baker, Andy Dick, Keith David, David Spade, and Renee Zellweger.

This movie had an awesome soundtrack in it that includes bands such as The Knack, Juliana Hatfield Three, Lisa Loeb (actually, I am pretty sure that this is the movie that broke her in the business), U2, Dinosaur Jr, and New Order.

I am pretty sure that this is the very first movie that I saw Janeane in. I still remember seeing this film at a small movie theater that was right across from Quail Springs Mall.

Dogma (1999)

Another movie with one hell (no pun intended) of a cast. This one was, of course, directed by Kevin Smith. The cast included Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, Salma Hayek, George Carlin, Alanis Morissette, Bud Cort and of course View Askew regulars Jason Mewes, Jason Lee and Kevin Smith himself.

I love this movie. I saw it in the theater like 3 times. Twice in one day!

Mystery Men (1999)

Directed by an unknown TV commercial director named Kinka Usher this comic was based on a comic book released by Dark Horse Comics called Flaming Carrot Comics.

Other than Janeane, it stars Ben Stiller, William H Macy, Hank Azaria, Paul Reubens, Geoffrey Rush, Gren Kinnear and Tom Waits.

This movie was considered a flop financially. Not surprising, a lot of movies that I liked never did well at the box office.

Governor Endorsement for 2010

I just want to go on record, just in case somebody has gotten the wrong idea, that I am NOT endorsing Mary Fallin for Governor of Oklahoma in the November 2010 general election.

By the same token, I am not endorsing Jari Askins either.

This is one of those elections where I really wish an Independent had decided to run. This is also another one of those elections where I really wish that the state of Oklahoma allowed the write-in vote.

I don't understand what is the big deal about allowing the write-in vote here.

But anyway, I'll say it again. I am NOT endorsing Fallin OR Askins.

Top 3 Films: Gwyneth Paltrow

Happy 38th Gwyneth!

Se7en (1995)

Gwyneth plays Tracy Mills, the wife of Brad Pitt's character Detective David Mills in this awesome film directed by David Fincher (Alien 3, Fight Club).

This fislm also starred Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and R. Lee Ermey.

Shallow Hal (2001)

In this film directed by the Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber, Theres Something About Mary, Fever Pitch, etc..) Gwyneth plays Rosemary, the girlfriend of Jack Black's character, Hal.

The movie also stars Jason Alexander as Hal's best friend and also includes a cameo part by self-help guru Tony Robbins.

Iron Man (2008)

Can't go wrong being in a super-hero movie. In this one, directed by Jon Favreau, Gwyneth plays Pepper Potts. She also reprises the role in the 2010 sequel.

Also starring in this movie are Robert Downey Jr (of course) as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Terrence Howard as Rhodey (who I think did a better job as the character than Don Cheadle), and Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane.

TITLE: The Naked Gospel: The Truth You Never Hear in Church

AUTHOR: Andrew Farley

YEAR PUBLISHED: 2009

PUBLISHER: Zondervan

Here is part of the blurb from the back of the book to give you an idea of what it is about:
Jesus plus nothing. 100% natural. No additives. It's the truth you may never hear in church. The Naked Gospel is a chapter by chapter assault on the church jargon and double talk of our day.

Casting Crowns Video: If We Are the Body

I think I might have posted this video on here before but it's worth posting again.

A lot about this video is the reason that people shun Christianity in my opinion. A lot of it reminds me of the attitudes of "religious" people that I had to deal with in my younger years.

Poll Results: U.S. Senator from Oklahoma

The polls are closed and the (very few) votes have been counted.

Republican Tom Coburn got 50% of the votes (I'm surprised he only got that much).
Democrat (and perennial candidate) Jim Rogers got 33% of the votes.
Independent Stephen Wallace received 16% of the votes.
Ronald Dwyer (whoever that might be) did not get any votes.

Of course, when the real election hits, I am almost certain it will not be this close. Coburn will probably blow them all out of the water.

Top 3 Films: Bill Murray

Happy 60th Birthday Bill!!!

Caddyshack (1980)

Directed by Harold Ramis, this film stars Chevy Chase, Ted Knight, Rodney Dangerfield, and Michael O'Keefe as well as Murray as country club assistant greenskeeper Carl Spackler.

This movie spawned a sequel but only Chevy Chase returned to reprise his role from the first one.

Stripes (1981)

Bill plays John Winger in this Ivan Reitman directed film.

This one had quite a cast. Harold Ramis, John Candy, Judge Reinhold, John Laroquette, Bill Paxton and Dennis Quaid.

Ghostbusters (1984)

Another Ivan Reitman directed film and another great movie that has spawned a sequel...and rumored to spawn a third.

This film also included Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts and William Atherton.

I think the trio of Murray, Aykroyd and Ramis are amazing together.

Night Ranger: DoTM

I'm not really sure what possessed me to do a DoTM on this group but....

This rock band from San Francisco formed in 1982 from the ashes of a funk band called Rubicon and a hard rock band called Stereo.

Currently Reading: Son of a Preacher Man

TITLE: Son of a Preacher Man: My Search for Grace in the Shadows

AUTHOR: Jay Bakker

YEAR PUBLISHED: 2001

PUBLISHER: HarperCollins Publishers

Did not quite make it through that Brian McLaren book from the last post. Writing style is way too boring for my tastes.

Anyway, this is one of the other books that I have been reading. It is written by the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.

Monday Morning Shuffle

  1. No One Believes in Moons and Goochers - Red City Radio (from the album To the Sons and Daughters of Woody Guthrie)
  2. Milquetoast - Helmet (from the album Betty)
  3. Send Your Regrets - Living Sacrifice (from the album Conceived in Fire)
  4. Oil - Season to Risk (from the album Season to Risk)
  5. Out of Exile - Audioslave (from the album Out of Exile)
  6. They Might Be Giants - They Might Be Giants (from the album Flood)
  7. Story About a Man with a Bad Heart - Emery (from the album I'm Only a Man)
  8. That's Love - Brad Paisley (from the album Mud on the Tires)
  9. 86 - Green Day (from the album Insomniac)
  10. Cold Feelings - Social Distortion (from the album Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell)
  11. I Don't Want to Grow Up - Descendents (from the album I Don't Want to Grow Up)

Top 3 Films: Gary Cole

Happy 54th Gary

In the Line of Fire (1993)

This film was directed by Wolfgang Peterson (Das Boot, The NeverEnding Story, Air Force One, etc) and also stars Clint Eastwood, John Malkovich and Rene Russo.

Cole stars as the supervisor to Clint Eastwood's Secret Service agent character, Frank Horrigan.

A Simple Plan (1998)

To be completely honest, I don't remember Gary Cole in this movie but there were a lot of obscure characters in this one. I think he plays an FBI agent in it. Or perhaps it was a person pretending to be in the FBI. Can't remember.

Anyway, it was directed by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man, etc.) and also stars Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thorton, and Bridget Fonda.

Office Space (1999)

In the role for which in my mind he will ever be remembered.... Bill Lumbergh, the boss of the main character Peter, played by Ron Livingston.

This film, directed by Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead), also stars Jennifer Aniston (what she was doing in this movie I'll never understand), Stephen Root, Mike Judge and even a cameo by Orlando Jones as a door-to-door magazine salesman.

Currently Reading: A New Kind of Christianity

TITLE: A New Kind of Christianity: Ten Questions that are Transforming the Faith

AUTHOR: Brian D. McLaren

PUBLISHER: Harper-Collins Publishers

YEAR PUBLISHED: 2010

It's back to non-fiction for a while. I'm actually reading several books right now but I figured I would focus on this one right now.

In this book, Brian asks the main question "What Would Christianity Look Like if We Weren't Afraid of Questions?"

Personally, I think everyone, Christian and non-Christian alike should question their own faith. If you aren't asking questions, I personally think that you are not learning. If you think you have it all down and there is no more room to learn anything else, you have it all wrong. Faith is not static, it is dynamic. Faith is a journey, not a stopping point. It is with this point of view in mind, I picked up this book to see what sort of questions Mr. McLaren is asking.

The 10 Questions, by the way, are:

What is the Overarching Story Line of the Bible?
How Should the Bible Be Understood?
Is God Violent?
Who is Jesus and Why is He Important?
What is the Gospel?
What Do We Do About Church?
Can We Find a Way to Address Human Sexuality Without Fighting About It?
Can We Find a Better Way of Viewing the Future?
How Should Followers of Jesus Relate to People of Other Religions?
How Can We Translate Our Quest into Action?

Big 12 Roundup Week 3!

1. In their 3rd straight home game, Oklahoma State played the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and beat them 65-28.
QB Josh Weeden ended up with 409 yards and 6 TDs. Hell, even the backup QB got 165 yards and 2 TDs to his credit.
Unfortunately, Hunter only ended up getting 59 rushing yards in this game. Passing really was dominant in this game. WR Justin Blackmon got 174 yards and 3 TDs.

2. Kansas plays Southern Mississippi in Mississippi and loses 31-16.

3. Nebraska plays Washington in Seattle and beats the Huskies 56-21. I am not happy about that.

4. Oklahoma plays another home game against the Air Force and barely wins 27-24.

5. Colorado plays a home game against Hawaii and wins 31-13.

6. 2 Big 12 teams play each, Kansas State and Iowa State at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The Wildcats win over the Cyclones 27-20.

Top 3 Films: James Gandolfini

Happy 49th Tony.....err...I mean, James!

True Romance (1993)

This film was directed by Tony Scott but was written Quentin Tarantino.

James plays the small part of Virgil, a mafia hit man searching for a bag of cocaine that was stolen by the main characters, Clarence and Alabama, played by Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette.

This movie had a phenomenal cast that included Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Chris Penn, Tome Sizemore, Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer, Samuel L Jackson (very small part), Michael Rappaport, Bronston Pinchot, and Saul Rubinek.

I can't believe there was never a sequel made to this film. It was amazing.

Crimson Tide (1995)

Another Tony Scott film which, strangely enough, was co-written by.....you won't believe this..Quentin Tarantino and Richard Henrick.

This one stars Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, and, of course, James G. in the small role as Lt. Bobby Dougherty.

This film was nominated for 3 Academy Awards but none for the acting.

The Last Castle (2001)

This was another really great movie but it wasn't directed by Tony Scott or written by Quentin Tarantino, LoL!

James plays Colonel Winters, the "warden" of a military prison in which Lieutenant General (that's a 3 star general) Eugene Irwin, played by Robert Redford, ends up in.

Once Upon a Time in America (September 17)

On this day in United States history in 1630, the city of Boston, Massachusetts was founded.

It was founded by English Puritans and originally called Trimountaine, then renamed Boston after a village in Lincolnshire, England.

The city is approximately 90 sq miles in area and about 645,000 people live there.

You can read about the city of Boston at www.cityofboston.org.

It was the site (obviously) of the Boston Massacre, where 5 Americans were killed by the hands of the British (March 5, 1770) and the Boston Tea Party, where a bunch of political activists dumped 342 chests full of tea into Boston Harbor in protest of the newly instituted tea tax imposed on the colonies by the British government.

Also, several battles of the American Revolution were fought here. The Battle of Bunker Hill (June 1775) and the Siege of Boston (April 1775). That Battles of Lexington and Concord were fought just a few miles away from Boston.

Boston is widely known for its sports teams.

Most importantly (in my opinion), the Boston Red Sox, who were established in 1901 and play at Fenway Park. They have won the World Series 7 times.

The Boston Celtics, established in 1946, play at TD Garden.

The Boston Bruines, established in 1924, also play at TD Garden.

The New England Patriots, established in 1960, play at Gillette Stadium, which technically is not in Boston but in Foxborough, which is about 20 miles from Boston.

As far as political leanings in the area go, Boston is roughly 55% Democratic and 7% Republican. The rest of the population considered themselves unaffiliated.

There are several colleges and universities in the Boston area including Boston College, Berklee College of Music, Boston University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MiT), Quincy College, and Suffolk University, among others.

The bands Aerosmith, American Wi-Fi, Boston (go figure), The Cars, Dinosaur Jr, Dropkick Murphys (duh), Extreme, Godsmack, Killswitch Engage, Letters to Cleo, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Pixies, and the Street Dogs are all originally from Boston.

Many of our founding fathers and other prominent politicians are originally from Boston such as John Adams, Samuel Adams, Michael Bloomberg, George H.W. Bush, Calvin Coolidge, Benjamin Franklin, John F Kennedy, John Kerry, Tip O' Neill, and Paul Revere.

There are also several other celebrities that call Boston their home, actors and sports figures such as Ben Affleck, Steve Carrell, Matt Damon, Geena Davis, Anthony Michael Hall, Matt Hasselback (Quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks), Denis Leary, Jay Leno, Matt LeBlanc, Edward Norton, Leonard Nimoy, Conan O'Brien, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Frost, and Mark Wahlberg.

Uhh...yeah......This blog post was brought to you by the Boston Chamber of Commerce. LoL!

New Poll: U.S. Senate Contest in Oklahoma

So this one might not even be worth doing but I am interested in seeing the results anyway.

Who should be elected to the U.S. Senate for Oklahoma in 2010?

Should it be........

Tom Coburn, current U.S. Senator running as a Republican?

Jim Rogers, a retired school teacher running as a Democrat? (Strangely enough, I could not find a website for this candidate.)

Ronald Dwyer, who is an Independent? (Could not find a website for him either)

or.....

Stephen Wallace, a real estate developer who is a former Republican but running as an Independent in this election.

My own person opinion on this election is that anyone running against Coburn is wasting their time. Nobody stands a change in hell against Coburn.

Top 3 Films: Sam Neill

Happy 63rd Sam!

The Final Conflict (1981)

This movie was the 3rd part in the original The Omen series, which tells the story of Damien Thorn, the son of the devil.

Sam Neill plays the title character, Damien, who is now an adult and becomes the Ambassador to Great Britain. The rest of the cast is pretty much a bunch of unknowns that I have never heard of.

I remember going to watch this movie with my parents when I was much younger. I'm not sure why they decided to take me to see this particular movie to be honest.

The Hunt for Red October (1990)

In this film directed by John McTiernan and based on a Tom Clancy novel, Sam plays Captain Vasily Borodin, the Executive Officer of the Russian submarine, the Red October.

Also starring in this film were Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin (who plays Jack Ryan, who was played later by Harrison Ford in Patriot Games and in Clear and Present Danger and then even later in the prequel, The Sum of All Fears by Ben Affleck), Scott Glenn, James Earl Jones, Tim Curry, Fred D Thompson, and Stellan Skarsgard.

Bicentennial Man (1999)

This film was directed by Chris Columbus and also starred Robin Williams and Oliver Platt. In this one Sam plays Andrew's (Robin William's character) "owner."

New Endorsement for 5th Congressional District``

Back in July I posted an endorsement for the 5th CD here in Oklahoma (5th Congressional District Endorsement)

In that post, I endorsed Independent candidate Dave White.

Well as you may or may not know, Dave White has pulled out of the race and endorsed Republican James Lankford (see yesterday's post Very Disappointing).

In any case, I do not join Dave in endorsing Mr Lankford so I have to pick someone else to endorse.

I have chosen to endorse Libertarian candidate Clark Duffe. You might remember that I did an interview with Mr. Duffe back in July.

So I wish Clark Duffe all the luck in his race against the GOP machine in the 5th CD.

Poll Results: Oklahoma Attorney General

The polls are closed and the votes are in.

Scott Pruitt won with 55% of the votes. It was tied up there for a while but that last surge of votes put Pruitt over the top.

Stay tuned...new poll coming soon.

Very Disappointing

Independent Dave White to drop out, endorse Lankford

The Oklahoma WatchDog has reported that it is true, Independent candidate Dave White has dropped out of the race for Congress in the 5th Congressional District.

It was announced at the Oklahoma City Republican Party headquarters.

He will be endorsing Republican James Lankford.

Well........that is just disappointing. I guess I know where my vote is going now.
