Sounding Off on the Wisconsin Protests

So I figured it was about time I chimed in on this whole Wisconsin protester issue that's going on.

Dave posted his thoughts about it back on the 22nd: My Thoughts on the Protests in Wisconsin.

So after looking at both sides of the issue and trying to decide whether or not I should pick a side I have decided that one, I should pick a side because I think it is important to have an opinion and two, that I am siding with the protesters on this one.

Most of my regular readers might be thinking. What?!? Siding with the unions? I thought you hated unions? Post such as Not As Pro-Union Anymore? would clearly say that I am anti-union. And saying things about supporting right to work laws would say that I am against unionization and support big business.

Well...yes and no.

I am not necessarily against the unions themselves. I do support big business but not 100%. I do not support big business in their "plight" against the workers. If stacked up against the corporations I support workers rights against them every time.

As I stated in the Not As Pro-Union post:
"..I do not think the unions need to go away completely. I still think workers should be able to organize to settle real grievances....and...if union members do not like the way their grievance is being handled...they should have the right to strike.

The problem with unions is not the union members. It is the union bosses that are just as much entrenched in politics as the people we elect to go to Washington DC. They are mostly in the business of lining their own pockets rather than to ACTUALLY help out the workers. Hmmm...just like our elected officials.

Anyway, back to the point here....why I am supporting the workers in the Wisconsin budget issue....

Wisconsin I'm sure is having a budget crisis, as is most of the country, and they are looking for areas to cut. I understand that. But I also think they need to take a good long hard look at what areas they should cut. I do not think that taking money out of teachers' pockets is the right way to go.

I was talking about this to my friend Scott this morning and he said something along the lines about it being sad that teachers need a union to represent them in order to get paid a decent wage. I completely agree with Scott. Among all of our country's public employees, teachers are the ones that get screwed over most often and it is very sad that they are constantly getting the bone when it comes to budget cuts.

Teachers? Seriously? You want to take money away from teachers? Aren't they financially screwed enough as it is? These are the people that are shaping our children's future and directly related, our country's future. Are these really the people that you want to take money away from? Ridiculous.

I really think that if the state of Wisconsin needs to free up some money somewhere that there are other areas to look at.

For instance, how much are the state legislators getting paid?

State Assembly members (as of 2008) make almost $50 grand a year. That's just salary. They also make $88 a day in living expenses while in session. They also are given $12000 to cover office expenses (printing, postage, etc..).

How about cutting some of these costs? Isn't being a state legislator, for one thing, a part time job? Isn't being a state legislator technically considered a civic duty? I'm not saying that state legislators should be a strictly volunteer position but I really don't think they should be making as much money as they do.

How much do teachers make in Wisconsin? Take a guess.

The starting salary for a teacher in the state of Wisconsin is $25,222...sad isn't it.

What about the school administrators? How much are they making in Wisconsin? If the salary differential between the teachers and the administrators is anything like it is here in Oklahoma then there is a huge area they can cut. And how many of them are there anyway (administrators that is)? How about making some cuts in the dead weight there?

Now I'm sure that the teachers are the only occupation that would be affected by these Wisconsin budget cuts but what other public employees would they be talking about? Police? Firefighters? Cut their salaries? Taking money out of the pockets out of those that risk their lives to serve and protect. Really great idea.

So to conclude with this tirade, I stand with the workers and if that means that I have to align myself with the unions for the time being, so be it. But keep in mind it is the workers I support, not the union bosses.

Currently Reading: Superman Earth One

TITLE: Superman Earth One

AUTHOR: J. Michael Straczynski

YEAR PUBLISHED: 2010

PUBLISHER: DC Comics

I saw this Superman reboot last week at my local comic book store and the artwork in it looked interesting and I'm always in the mood for a good character reboot. Plus, I really liked the work that Straczynski did on The Amazing Spider-Man a few years back so I picked it up and thought I'd give it a try.

This one was originally released in October 2010 and written, of course, by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski. It was illustrated by Shane Davis, who has done work on such DC comics such as Action Comics, Batman, Nightwing, Robin and Wonder Woman, among others.

So I read it a few days ago....

I have to say that it is very well written, not much surprise there. The artwork, which is what prompted me to take a 2nd glance at it in the first place, is great.

The story....well.....it is interesting. For lack of a better way to describe it...personally, it is the strangest Superman reboot I have ever read. First off, the story is about a very young Clark Kent/Superman. But that isn't what makes it strange.

Here is a very brief synopsis. An alien race that used to be at war with Krypton and, in fact, was the cause of the destruction of Krypton, finds out that the last son of Krypton was rocketed to earth so they decide to come down to Earth and issue an ultimatum: either the last son of Krypton turns himself over to them so they can kill him or they destroy the entire planet.

I won't say that I don't like the story. It is interesting. I will probably read it again soon. I think the main problem of another Superman reboot is that it does not really measure up to the mother of all Superman reboots. The 1986 John Byrne reboot, Superman: The Man of Steel.

So I would suggest you go ahead and read it for yourselves and determine whether or not you like it. As I said before, it is very well written and the artwork is cool so that alone makes it worth at least one reading.

Currently Watching: Serenity

Serenity is a film written and directed by Joss Whedon. It is a sequel to the cult television series Firefly. It was released in August 2005.

From what I remember reading, it is set roughly 6 months after the events in the television series.

The plots seems to be focused primarily on the ongoing sub-plot in the show about River and the crew hiding her and her brother from the Alliance.

The film does fill in a few plot holes that were left by the TV series and does a good job telling the back story about how Simon got his sister out of the Alliance facility she was in.

It also tells the interesting story of the origin of the Reavers.

Definitely worth watching but I highly suggest you go out and buy the Firefly show on DVD and watch it first. Enjoy!

Currently Reading: Flash - Rebirth

TITLE: Flash:Rebirth
AUTHOR: Geoff Johns
PUBLISHER: DC Comics
YEAR PUBLISHED: 2009-2010

This trade paperback was originally published as a 6 issue series that ran from April 2009 to February 2010.

It was written by Geoff Johns (who also wrote Green Lantern: Rebirth and the Blackest Night miniseries, among many other comics) and illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver.

It follows the events of the Final Crisis series where the Silver Age Flash (Barry Allen) returns from the dead (who, in case you didn't know, died during the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline).

I liked the story and I really liked the inclusion of all of the men that carried the Flash mantle (Jay Gerrick, Barry Allen, Wally West and Bart Allen). It also included the 2nd Reverse Flash (Eobard Thawne, aka Professor Zoom).

One thing I realized after reading this trade paperback is that, personally, I prefer the Wally West Flash than the Barry Allen Flash. Not to say that I don't like the Barry Allen Flash. I mean, for all intents and purposes, Barry is the person that put Flash on the map and the person that first got me interested in reading the Flash comics. I just happen to prefer West over Allen. I have not started reading the new Flash series with Barry taking the mantle of the Flash back over from West but I bought a few of them and I'll see what I think of Allen taking over after reading them.

Whether or not you are a fan of The Flash, if you have not read this story, you really should go check it out.

Dave did a review of this TPB over at his blog back in August.

Currently Reading: Batman: Cacophony

TITLE: Batman: Cacophony
AUTHOR: Kevin Smith
PUBLISHER: DC Comics
YEAR PUBLISHED: 2009

This graphic novel was originally done in 3-parts, which originally ran between November 2008 and March 2009.

The artwork was done by Walt Flanigan and of course was written by Kevin Smith.

It stars out about a war between the Joker and a crime lord that makes the mistake of using the Joker's "venom" to lace his street drugs with and winds up being another story about Batman's ongoing feud the Joker.

I don't mean that in a bad way even it might have come across that way. It's a good story. I think Kevin Smith does a pretty good behind the pen of a comic book. I'm now looking forward to reading the sequel to it The Widening Gyre.

Character Profiles: Darkseid vs Silver Surfer

Here is a new thing I decided to start to coincide with the DC vs Marvel poll. Here is a little short bio and power information about this week's combatants. Perhaps it might help you decide who is the better man.

Darkseid

Darkseid is a major nemesis of Superman (as well as the rest of most of the DC Universe) and leader of the planet Apokolips.

His first comic book appearance was in 1970 in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134. He was created by Jack Kirby.

His powers include:
The Omega Effect - concussive and/or disintegrating energy beams (also allows him to teleport through time and space)
Superhuman strength, stamina, speed, agility and reflexes

Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer, formerly Norrin Radd, was an astronomer on the planet Zenn-La that offered his services to Galactus in exchange for the life of his planet.

His first comic book appearance was in March 1966 in Fantastic Four #48. He was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Silver Surfer possesses the Power Cosmic which gives him the following powers:
superhuman strength, stamina, durability, and senses
he can travel through space on his cosmic surfboard as fast as the speed of light
limited telepathic ability
the ability to heal living organisms
energy projection for offensive and defensive purposes (it has been said that his cosmic bolts can destroy planets)

Top 3 Films: Chris Rock

Happy 46th Birthday Chris!!!!

Dogma (1999)
In this Kevin Smith film, Rock plays Rufus the 13th Apostle (left out of the Bible because he is black).
Rock's character in this movie was hilarious and made a movie that was already great better.
I loved this movie. I saw it in the theater like 3 or 4 times. In fact, I watched it twice on the same day (long story).
Great cast. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon play 2 renegade angels. Linday Fiorentino plays Bethany, a woman that finds out she is related to Jesus. Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith play the comical duo of Jay and Silent Bob. Also in the movie are Alan Rickman, Jason Lee, Salma Hayek, George Carlin, Bud Cort and Alanis Morissette.

Down to Earth (2001)
In this one, Chris plays a comedian that is hit by a bus and dies before it was his "appointed time." The angel that takes his soul away has to find him a new one and Chris' character, Lance Barton ends up in the body of an rich senior citizen. This film is a re-make (of sorts) of a 1978 film starring Warren Beatty called Heaven Can Wait, which itself is actually a remake of a 1941 film titled Here Comes Mr. Jordan.
Also starring in this film are Eugene Levy, Wanda Sykes and John Cho.

Head of State (2003)
Chris not only starred in this film but also directed it. Great political comedy about an alderman (Mays Gilliam) that loses his job and winds up running for President.
Also starring in this film are Bernie Mac (who plays Mays' brother and vice presidential candidate), Robin Givens, and Tracy Morgan, among many others.

Dr Doolittle (1998) - as the voice of Rodney the guinea pig

Currently Watching: Firefly

Here is another TV show I recently just started watching. Once again, I am watching it based on a friend's recommendation. The same friend, in fact, that recommended the show Dollhouse. I liked that show so much, and based on the fact that the same guy that created Dollhouse (see Currently Watching: Dollhouse) also created this one, I figured the guy has good taste in TV shows so I would try it out.

I have to admit that the first episode, titled Serenity, started out pretty slow and I was starting to get worried that this show was, quite frankly, going to suck. However, once that first episode got going, I was hooked. It is a great show. It's got everything.

You like sci-fi? It's got it. You like westerns? It's got it.

It reminds me a bit of a module of a role-playing game I used to play back in the day called Rifts. I can't help but think that Joss Whedon is probably a gamer of some sort.

It is basically about a group of space smugglers that are on the run from the "Alliance" the legitimate "galactic" government (similar in nature to Star Wars' Empire) and the adventures that they get into as they go from job to job around the solar system. It takes place about 500 years in the future.

I am up to episode 6 now and look forward to watching the rest of the episodes. And after watching the whole season, I will be watching the "sequel" that was made into a theatrical movie titled Serenity, and from what I have been told, takes place 6 months after the conclusion of the events in the TV series.

Tragically, the show only last 1 season. Fox aired 11 episodes from September to December of 2002 and then cancelled it based on poor ratings, despite the fact that it had a huge fan base and despite the fact that 14 episodes were filmed.

Based on what I have seen so far, I definitely recommend watching this one.

Top 3 Films: Christopher Guest

Happy 63rd Nigel...er...I mean, Christopher.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
In this classic "mockumentary" of a fictional band directed by Rob Reiner, Guest plays, of course, Nigel Tufnel, along with Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, who together form the band Spinal Tap. This movie goes to 11!

The Princess Bride (1987)
Another film directed by Rob Reiner, Guest plays one of the villains in the film, Count Tyrone Rugen. This was a great film that had a really great cast. Cary Elwes, Robin Wright (before she was Wright-Penn), Mandy Patinkin ("My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die), Andre the Giant, Wallace Shawn, Peter Falk, Fred Savage, Billy Crystal (Miracle Max!), and Carol Kane.

A Few Good Men (1992)
Very strangely enough, this film was also directed by Rob Reiner. One of my all time favorite films, it was based on play written by Aaron Sorkin who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Sorkin also wrote the screenplays for The American President (another great Rob Reiner film) and Charlie Wilson's War (which was also a really good film). Anyway, back to A Few Good Men. Amazing movie. Amazing cast including Tom Cruise (before he went crazy), Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Pollack, JT Walsh, Noah Wyle, Cuba Gooding Jr, and, of course, Christopher Guest, who plays Dr Stone.
