Favorite Comic Book Writers

This is a list of my top 5 favorite comic book writers (in no particular order, just as they came to mind) and a list of some of their highlights:

Geoff Johns (Flash, Green Lantern, Infinite Crisis, Batman, Blackest Night, Brightest Day, Superman, Ultimate X-Men....)

Jeph Loeb (The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Hush, Death of Captain America, Superman/Batman, X-Men)

Chuck Dixon (Batman, GCPD, Batman and the Outsiders, Birds of Prey, Nightwing, Robin, Detective Comics, Doom, The Punisher)

Frank Miller (Batman, Batman Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City, Ronin, Daredevil, Superman, Spider-Man, Wolverine)

Garth Ennis (Preacher, Punisher, Judge Dredd, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Hellblazer)

Honorable Mentions

Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Superman: Birthright, X-Men: Age of Apocalypse)

Kevin Smith (Green Arrow: Quiver, Batman: Cacophony, Batman: The Widening Gyre)

John Byrne (Superman: The Man of Steel)

Grant Morrison (Batman RIP, Return of Bruce Wayne, JLA, Final Crisis, 52)

Men in Black 3!

Here are some photo stills from the new Men in Black movie from SuperHero Hype.

The photos show Will Smith and Josh Brolin playing a younger Agent K. Looking at the pictures I can see it working pretty well. Tommy Lee Jones of course will be back playing the current version of Agent K.

It is scheduled to be released in May 2012. Barry Sonnenfield will be returning as director and Steven Speilberg will be producing again. Rip Torn will also be back to play Zed.

I have to say that I am actually pretty excited about seeing another installment of MIB. I loved the first two.

Currently Reading: Batman: Hush

TITLE: Batman Hush
AUTHOR: Jeph Loeb (writer), Jim Lee (pencils)
YEAR PUBLISHED: 2009
PUBLISHER: DC Comics

I have read this before, probably by having borrowed it from a library somewhere, and I remember that I really like it.

Anyway, I couple of weeks ago, I found a used copy of it at a Half Priced Books store for really really cheap so I picked it up.

Tonight I decided to read it again.

How could you go wrong when you team up one of the best writers in the comic biz along with one of the best illustrators in the comics biz? The answer is that you can't.

The story is great. The artwork is great. Everything about it is great.

This story makes me remember one of the reasons that I really like Batman as a costumed super hero. He holds himself to a certain standard and rarely comes close to crossing the line against that standard.

TITLE: Battle for the Cowl

AUTHOR: Tony Daniel

So I finally finished Final Crisis (personally, I thought it was a difficult read, so much going on in there).

I have been looking forward to reading this one.

I can't say that I have ever heard of Tony Daniel and don't know what else he has written (and I have not bothered to look it up yet, lol!)

Character Profiles: Power Girl vs Ms. Marvel

Power Girl

Power Girl is the cousin of Kal-L, the Superman the pre-Crisis Earth 2. She is essentially the Earth 2 version of Supergirl.

Her 1st appearance was in All Star Comics #58 in January 1976. Her character was created by Gerry Conway, Ric Estrada, and Wally Wood.

Essentially, she has the same powers as Superman such as flight, superhuman strength, super speed, x-ray vision, telescopic vision, heat vision, freeze breath and super-hearing.

The biggest different between her and Superman, besides the fact that she is a girl, is because she is originally from Earth 2, kryptonite from New Earth does not affect her. The only real vulnerability she has is magic.

Ms. Marvel

Ms. Marvel was created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan. Her character 1st appeared in Marvel Super Heroes #13 in March 1968.

Her alter-ego, Carol Danvers, was originally an officer in the United States Air Force and friend of Dr Walter Lawson, the alter-ego of the Kree Captain Marvel.

She was caught in the explosion of a Kree device which is how she got her powers: superhuman strength, endurance, stamina, and flight. She also has the ability to discharge explosive blasts of energy from her fingers and can absorb other forms of energy which amplify her powers. She has other skills such as espionage, piloting, hand to hand combat and marksmanship.

Remember When?

Remember when our country was led by humble men of humble origins?
Remember when being a legislator was a civic duty?
Remember when our our leaders did their civic duty and then went back to work at home?
Remember when legislators were not career politicians?
Remember when the most important topic of discussion was what is good for the country and not what is best for the party?
Remember when the only special interest that Congress served was the people of the United States?

Do you remember?

Probably not. It has been gone for a long time. But wouldn't it be great to get that type of government back.

Our country could be great again if we had some back to basics government. A government for the people, of the people and by the people. The way it was meant to be.

Back to basics government. What a great idea.

Possible Republican Candidates in 2012

This is a list of those that have either officially declared that they are Republican Presidential candidates or have formed an Exploratory Committee.

Herman Cain
Businessman and host of 'The Herman Cain' show.
Former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
Cain supported the TARP bank bailouts and does not believe that the Federal Reserve should be audited.
Right now, Cain is in the Exploratory Committee phase. Personally, I don't think he will get the nomination because I don't think most Republicans would really take a radio talk show host seriously as a presidential candidate.

Newt Gingrich
Former Speak of the House of Representatives
Gingrich is pro-life (but is pro-death penalty) and believes that our military should maintain its presence in Afghanistan (another war monger, figures).
He officially announced his candidacy on May 11.
Of all of the Republican candidates, Gingrich is probably one of the few that can be taken seriously as a candidate but I don't really think he will win the nomination. It might end up coming down to him and one other person though.

Gary Johnson
Former Governor of New Mexico
Officially announced his candidacy on April 21.
Johnson has been called the "original Tea Party candidate."
He is a strong advocate of limited government and wants to cut the federal budget by cutting spending on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security by at least 43%. He opposes the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
From what I have read about him, he is almost as close to a libertarian candidate that the Republican party has as Ron Paul. He is probably another one that could be considered a serious candidate.

Fred Karger
Political Consultant
Officially announced himself as a candidate on March 23.
So here is the thing. Karger will never be considered a serious option as a Republican candidate because he is a former gay rights activity and he is openly gay himself. I mention this and do not mention any of his political positions because I really don't think the Republican party would allow a homosexual to win the nomination. He will not last long in the primaries in my opinion.

Tom Miller
Flight Attendant
Tom has officially declared himself as a candidate.
He is pro-life (but supports the death penalty), does not support the war in Afghanistan, wants to repeal Obamacare, and believes the federal minimum wage should be abolished.
I'm not sure how to say this but, a flight attendant as a Presidential candidate. Keep in mind that I'm all for regular type people running for political office and would love nothing more than for someone with no political experience to run for president but......we are talking about the Republican party here. It won't happen. It doesn't matter how good a person's ideas sound, the party will not nominate someone with no political experience. They are not up to that stage yet, and may never be there.

Ron Paul
Congressman from Texas
Formally announced on May 13.
Paul is a former medical doctor and currently a Congressman that sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the Joint Economic Committee, the Committee on Financial Services and is the Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy.
He is the closest thing the Republican Party has to a Libertarian in its ranks.
He is pro-life (and opposes the death penalty), against our country's worldwide military presence, believes that government should not get involved in gay/lesbian affairs, believes eminent domain should be illegal, and thinks our country should withdrawal from the United Nations.
Personally, I hope he wins the nomination although I don't think he will. If he did win the nomination, I would totally vote for him.

Tim Pawlenty
Governor of Minnesota
Pawlenty has formed an exploratory committee.
Pro-life candidate. Favors more troops in Afghanistan. Favors a balanced budget amendment. Supports the 2nd Amendment but also supports background checks. Wants to repeal Obamacare.
Based on what I have read about him, Pawlenty sounds to me like the typical Republican candidate. If he does end up running for President, it is likely that he could go far in the primaries.

Mitt Romney
Former Governor of Massachusetts
Romney is considered to be a front runner for the 2012 nomination but at this point has only formed an exploratory committee.
Romney believes abortion should be illegal except in cases of rape and incest. Thinks Obamacare should be repealed (even though it bears quite a resemblance to the health care reform act that he himself enacted in the state of Massachusetts).
I think Romney is also one of the few candidates that can be taken seriously. I think that in 2012 the whole Mormon thing won't be as much of an issue as it was in 2008.

Rick Santorum
Former US Senator from Pennsylvania
Santorum has formed an exploratory committee.
As a Senator, he has supported legislation to restrict abortion, opposed amnesty for illegal immmigrants, supported the war in Iraq.
He was a member of the "Gang of Seven," a group of freshman Republican Representatives from the 101st Congress in 1990. This is the group that primarily drafted the Contract with America.

Vern Wuensche
Businessman
Wuensche ran in 2008 and finished 10th in the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries.
He believes abortion should be banned. Supports a balanced budget amendment. Supports the elimination of the IRS and a national consumption tax. Opposes Obamacare. Supports abolishing the U.S. Department of Education. Opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants.
He seems like a reasonable candidate to me but I don't think he has the name recognition to go very far. That and the fact that, once again, he has no political experience to speak of so he would probably not go far in the Republican primaries anyway.

Foo Fighter Video: Walk

This song plays at the end of the Thor movie (which is where I first heard it). Good song.

Mudhoney: DoTM

Mudhoney is a rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington from the ashes of the band Green River, which itself was formed from the ashes of the band Mr Epp and the Calculations. They are considered one of the pioneers of the "grunge" music genre, which is basically a combination of punk rock and heavy metal.

Currently Reading: Final Crisis

TITLE: Final Crisis

AUTHOR: Grant Morrison (illustrated by J.G. Jones and Doug Mahnke)

YEAR PUBLISHED: 2010

PUBLISHER: DC Comics

After finishing Infinite Crisis I found a synopsis online for both the 52 and Countdown to Final Crisis limited series and read those. I didn't feel like going out and buying either of them because (1) they are far too extensive for my short attention span, and (2) i can't afford to buy all of those issues.

So anyway, I bought this one a while back before I realized that it was part of an extended storyline that began with Infinite Crisis, which, of course, started way back when with the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline.

So now I am ready to start this one. Good luck me.

Currently Reading: Infinite Crisis

TITLE: Infinite Crisis

AUTHOR: Geoff Johns (illustrated by Phil Jimenez and George Perez)

PUBLISHER: DC Comics

YEAR PUBLISHED: 2008

Actually, I'm not "currently" reading this one, I just finished reading it a few minutes ago.

Anyway, this trade paperback is a collection of the Infinite Crisis limited series that was published by DC Comics in 2008. It is sort of a sequel to the limited series from 1985 titled Crisis on Infinite Earths.

It basically un-does everything that happened in Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The artwork in it is pretty cool. It is co-illustrated by the original artist for Crisis on Infinite Earth's George Perez.

The writing in it is pretty good. No big surprise considering it is written by Geoff Johns.

Overall, it is a good read. The only problem I found with it is that it jumps around too much and it is easy to get confused as to what is actually going on if you aren't paying close enough attention.

In the DC Universe, this limited series is followed by the 52 limited series, which is followed by Countdown to Final Crisis, which is also followed by Final Crisis (which will be my next read, 52 and Countdown I just found and read a few synopsis of on the Internet because I don't feel like going out and buying them).

Character Profiles: Daredevil vs Red Robin

I did one of these for the Darkseid vs Silver Surfer poll and figured I'd continue that little tradition for those of you that read this blog that are not huge comic nerds like the rest of us - lol!

Daredevil

Well, first of all, if you don't know who Daredevil is, there is little hope for you in the comic world.

Daredevil is superhero in the Marvel Comics universe that was created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett. His first appearance was in April 1964 in Daredevil #1. He is based out of New York City, specifically the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood.

He is blind but has extremely heightened senses due to the accident that blinded him. He has a kind of radar sense and has a superhuman athletic ability.

Red Robin

Red Robin is the new persona of Batman's 3rd Robin, also known as Tim Drake.

Tim Drake was created by Marv Wolfman and Pat Broderick. His 1st appearance in comics was in August 1989 in Batman #436. His 1st appearance as Red Robin was in August 2009 in Red Robin #1.

Tim/Red Robin does not actually have any "super" powers to speak of but has many skills. He is a master of martial arts, has a high intellect and has detective skills that rival his mentor, Batman. He is highly educated in computer systems, engineering, genetics, and is known to possess excellent leadership skills.

Abortion Funding Ban Passed by House!

Last Sunday I posted this:

House to Vote on Abortion Funding Ban!

Yesterday, the House voted on HR-3, otherwise known as the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.

It passed 251-175. If you are interested in knowing specifics, all 235 Republicans voted for it (no big surprise there) and only 16 Democrats voted for it (including Oklahoma's own Dan Boren).

The chief author of the bill was Congressman Chris Smith, Republican from New Jersey.

You can read more about the passage of this bill here at LifeNews.com:

House Passes Complete Ban on Taxpayer Funding of Abortions

A handful of Senators have introduced a similar bill to try and apply it to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, which currently allows taxpayer-funded abortions via health plans that are administered by the federal government.

I don't really see the bill passing through the Senate. Not in this term anyway. But at least getting it on the books is a way of showing that this particular hot button political issues is not going to go away any time soon.

Eastern Conference

Boston Celtics vs Miami Heat
Currently Miami is leading 1-0 but I am picking Boston in this contest.

Chicago Bulls vs Atlanta Hawks
I'm going to go with Chicago on this one.

Western Conference

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Memphis Grizzlies
Memphis is ahead 1-0 in the series. I'm picking the Thunder to win this series.

Dallas Stars vs Los Angeles Lakers
I would really like to see the Stars win this one over the Lakers because I really hate the Lakers but I don't see it happening.

House to Vote on Abortion Funding Ban!

According to LifeNews.com article the U.S. House of Representatives is planning to vote on a ban of taxpayer-funded abortions.

It is expected to pass the House but since the Senate is still controlled by the Democrats, it is likely to stall there.

Personally, I am in favor of the ban. If you have never read by blog before, I am pro-life. If you have read it before this comes as no surprise to you.

I am all in favor of making it illegal for my money to fund something I don't believe in.
