Smoking Popes Concert Review

Tuesday, July 26, the Conservatory was graced by the presence of Chicago's Smoking Popes. The Popes are currently on a short break from their tour with Alkaline Trio and on their way back home to Chicago to meet up with the Trio again.

This show was absolutely outstanding and I can say without a doubt in my mind that this is the best concert I have ever been to.

You see, I have been listening to the Popes for a long time. A really long time. I was in Chicago in the summer of 1993 when their debut album Get Fired was released. I was browsing around in the Wax Trax Records store there in Chicago and came across the CD in the local bands bin. I have to admit that I bought it primarily because I thought the name was cool but ever since my first listen of that CD I have been hooked.

This was the first time since I started listening to the Popes that I have been able to see them in concert and I am really glad that I was able to get off work to go check this show out because I was certainly not disappointed (aside from the low turn out that is).

Local band They Stay Dead opened up the night for us, playing a pretty healthy opening set of great songs that I'm sure we will all look forward to seeing on an upcoming intended full length album that they will recording soon. In fact, a little bird told me that they might be recording this album up in Tulsa with Stephen Egerton at his studio. That would be really awesome.

The next opening band was another local band called Fellowship Students. I'm not really going to say much about them. They are a little bit too experimental for my tastes. The crowd was into them though so I'll give them that.

Then, the Popes finally took the stage. They were amazing. They were energetic and the song selection of their set list was just about perfect. I was told by another little bird that this set list is different from the set they play on the tour with the Trio because they were able to play a little bit longer here than on the tour.

They opened up with the 1st 2 songs from Destination Failure and then blasted into the 1st track from the new one This Is Only a Test. The show was a pretty good mixture of old and new songs and the crowd was into each and every one of the tunes they played. One of the highlights of the set was when the everyone from the band except Josh left the stage and Josh led the crowd in a low-key sing-a-long of the song "Pretty Pathetic" which is obviously a fan favorite (I have to admit that it is one of my favorites as well).

I wish there would have been more people at this show simply for the fact that I really wish more people could have experienced it for themselves. I can think of one person in particular that I really wish had been there. They know who they are, I don't have to mention their name.

The music aside, the guys in the band are really some of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I got a chance to talk to them a little bit before the show at the record store next door and they are all really cool. I also got a chance to talk to them more in depth after the show. They were around for quite a while after the show to hang around and talk to people.

Quite frankly, all around, this show was a great experience for everyone that was there.

Here is a list of the songs that they played.

No More Smiles (from 1997's Destination Failure)**

Lefty's CD Review: Born to Quit

Last month, Dave (aka Lefty) reviewed the Smoking Pope's album Born to Quit.

Here is an excerpt:

"Born to Quit, released in 1995, was the Smoking Popes second album and first for major label Capital Records.......The album itself is a mixture of pop punk and power pop with Sinatra-meets-Morrissey lounge-esque vocals...."

Currently Watching: Jericho

I started watching this TV series about a week or so ago. I first heard about the show at a meeting of the Eastern Oklahoma County Libertarians. My wife found it on Netflix so we both have been watching it almost nonstop.

It was originally broadcast by CBS from September 2006 to March 2008.

Interesting thing about this show is that after the first season, the network cancelled it. However, because its large fan base basically protested the network, it was given a 2nd season (although the 2nd season only last 7 episodes).

A 3rd "season" has been made, although it is not on television. The 3rd season is a 6-part comic book series. There are also talks about a movie being made.

Anyway, the first season is about the residents of a small town in western Kansas (the town is called Jericho) as they deal with the life after the United States is torn apart by multiple nuclear attacks that destroyed almost all of the major cities in the country.

The 2nd season (which I have not completed watching about) so far is about how the resident of Jericho deal with the new "legitimate" government of the United States, the Allied States of America.

It's a pretty good show. I'd recommend checking it out.

Smoking Popes: Dream Set List

As I have mentioned several times in the past few days, the Chicago band, Smoking Popes are gracing Oklahoma City with their presence at the Conservatory on Tuesday, June 26.

This is my "dream" set list of their show. I know a couple of these won't get played because in my interview with Josh earlier this week, he stated that the Pope's don't do Duvall songs. But one can dream, can't he?

Brand New Hairstyle (from 1991s Inoculator)
Let's Hear It For Love (from 1993s Get Fired)
Let Them Die (from 1993s Get Fired)
Not That Kind of Girlfriend (from 1993s Get Fired)
Rubella (from 1994s Born to Quit)
Need You Around (from 1994s Born to Quit)
Star Struck One/No More Smiles (from 1997s Destination Failure)
Before I'm Gone (from 1997s Destination Failure)
Pretty Pathetic (from 1997s Destination Failure)
Seven Lonely Days (from 2001s The Party's Over)
The Moon Looks Like a Tomato (from 2001s Standing At the Door)
Racine (from 2003s Volume and Density)
Welcome to Janesville (from 2008s Stay Down)
If You Don't Care (from 2008s Stay Down)
Wish You Were (from 2011s Wish We Were)
Punk Band (from 2011s Wish We Were)

CD Review: This Is Only a Test

Not many punk bands would consider releasing concept albums (Green Day's American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown in fact are the only ones that come to mind) but the band Smoking Popes have figured out a way to make it work. They have used a concept that only Smoking Popes could have pulled off, the story of an American high school teenager and his feelings on the chaos and confusion that is….well…the life of an American high school teenager.

This Is Only a Test, Smoking Pope’s second studio album since reuniting and the follow up to 2008s Stay Down, gets off to a good start with “Wish We Were,” which uses a theme all too familiar to high school teenage boys, unrequited love. It slows down a bit for the piano-introduced number “College” a first-person perspective of a boy that sees no future in becoming a slave to the man. It picks up immediately after with “Punk Band” another first-person perspective song of the boy deciding what he wants to do with his life, namely “living in a van” and “sleeping on the floor.” The rest of the album tells the rest of the story such as the boy trying out for, making, and ultimately regretting, the school football team and his continuing search for love.

Musically, the album, quite simply, sounds like a Smoking Popes album. Much like Stay Down before it, This Is Only a Test picks up where 1997s Destination Failure left off, while still sounding new and fresh at the same time. They even experiment a little bit with the electronically-laced Excuse Me, Coach.

Overall, I really like this album. I think the Pope's have progressed quite nicely over the years. They have taken what they have done really well over the past 20 years, well-crafted, melodic, pop-punk songs and taken them to the next level.

My personal favorites on the album are "Wish We Were" "This Is Only a Test" "College" "Punk Band" "Diary of a Teen Tragedy" and "Letter to Emily."

My Favorite Posts

What I did was look through all of the posts that I have done since Otter Limits started back in 2005 and came up with a list of my favorites.

So here they are and Happy 2000th post Otter Limits!!!

P.O. Box and a Pager (3/23/2005).

One of the first posts that I wrote for The Otter Limits. I just thought this was a pretty cool little autobiographical journal type thing that I'd throw up on here for all to read.

Discography of the Moment: AudioRageGarden (1/17/2007).

This is the first one of these things that I did. To date I have done nearly 200 of these DoTMs but this is the one that started it all.

Brad on the Issues (12/15/06).

Little report I did on the governor (at the time) of Oklahoma and where he stood on certain issues. This is the post that started both the On the Issues and the Sounding Off on...columns.

The Failure of the War on Drugs (6/20/08)

Has just always been one of my favorite things that I have written.

Why Led Zeppelin Sucks (6/13/09).

This was posted initially as a joke (although truthfully, I really don't like Led Zeppelin) this post sparked probably the most commented post on the Otter Limits to date and usually shows up on the stats of one of the posts with the highest all-time hits.

Unbecoming the Elephant (6/27/10).

This was a short essay-type thing that I did on why I left the Republican Party and (if I'm being perfectly honest with myself) the reason why I never should have joined them in the first place.

Oklahoma State Questions in 2010 (7/25/10).

I didn't really think that this post was all that interesting when I wrote. I just thought I'd post some information about the State Questions for my few readers. How strange how something so simple can make such an impact though. To date, this post has the highest hits of any one post here on the Otter Limits. As of the writing of this post, it has been viewed almost 3700 times!

Interview with Josh Caterer

Tuesday, July 26, Smoking Popes will be coming to town! They are playing at The Conservatory. Doors open at 8pm. I definitely plan on being there.

Yesterday, I emailed Josh (Caterer, singer and guitar player for the Popes) and asked if he would be willing to do an interview. I was pretty amazed at the quick affirmative response he gave. I would have figured he would be too busy (since they ARE on tour and everything) to get back to me but not only did he agree very quickly, he always responded to my interview questions pretty quickly. So anyway, here is the interview I did with him:

What made you originally want to play in a band ?

I always loved music. Ever since I was a little kid. We grew up listening to all kinds of stuff...rock, blues, big band, country, then started getting into punk rock and decided that was the way to go.

How did the Smoking Popes get together?

The Popes just kind of happened. My brothers and I had been jamming together since we were kids, so it seemed pretty natural to put a band name on it and start playing out.

From what I understand Smoking Popes were disbanded because of your heavy involvement in Christianity. Are you back together now because you are not involved in that anymore? What made you decide to put Smoking Popes back together?

When I became a Christian in 1998, it was such a huge change for me. Jesus changed my whole life, and it took me some time to adjust. I had to put everything else aside and just focus on my faith for awhile. After a few years, I felt grounded enough in my faith to be able to play rock music again without compromising in any way.

What is it like playing in a band with 2 of your brothers? Any sibling rivalry going on there?

No, we've always been great friends. We get along really well. I think being brothers helps us because we grew up with the same musical tastes and we can communicate really easily when we're arranging music.

What are some of the differences you have noticed between working with Capitol Records as opposed to, say, Asian Man Records?

We love working with Mike Park at Asian Man. He's a great guy. Being on Capitol was an interesting experience, but I think we're more of an indie band. We like being able to do things the way we want without a lot of red tape.

What is the song writing process like? Do you write lyrics first or music first?

I usually write the music and melody first, then I'll work on lyrics. Sometimes the music comes pretty quickly. I can put it together in one sitting. Then I'll spend weeks looking for the right words. It took me three months to write the lyrics to Pretty Pathetic.

Is your other band, Duvall, still technically together and just on hiatus or had it been completely disbanded? Do you play any Duvall songs on tour with Smoking Popes?

Duvall didn't officially disband, it just got eclipsed by the Popes reunion. Duvall did a couple shows last year, and I play Duvall songs when I do solo acoustic shows, but we don't play them at Popes shows. I'm not sure why, it just doesn't seem like the thing to do.

What sort of bands/artists have you been listening to lately?

I've been listening to the Secret Sisters album a lot. I love it. Other than that, I pretty much listen to old stuff. Beatles, Stones, Ramones, stuff like that.

What sort of things do you like to do outside of playing music?

I like to ride around on my motorcycle. I also like to watch movies with my wife. We get old movies from Netflix. I also very much enjoy sleeping.

Smoking Popes: The Videos

This one is from the new album This Is Only a Test.

From Destination Failure

This one is from the album Stay Down. This is probably my favorite song from that album.

This one was originally released on their first full length album, Get Fired. This song is one of my all-time favorite Popes songs.

Another one of my favorites. This one is from the album Born to Quit. It also showed up on a couple of movie soundtrack albums, namely on Clueless.

Ranking the Albums: Smoking Popes

One of my favorite bands, Smoking Popes, will be in town on July 26 at the Conservatory. I'm pretty stoked about being able to see them.

Dave suggested that I do a ranking the albums post on them. I did one of these back in March on the Dropkick Murphys. Like that one, this ranking is based on studio albums only. Not live albums. Not compilation albums. Not splits with other bands. Just studio albums.

So here it is.....

Destination Failure
This album was released in 1997 by Capitol Records.
Singles from the album included "I Know You Love Me" and "Before I'm Gone."
My personal favorites from the album are "No More Smiles" "Before I'm Gone" "Megan" "Pure Imagination" and "Pretty Pathetic."

This Is Only a Test
This is their newest album that was released in March of 2011 by Asian Man Records.
It might be a little strange that such a new album ended up so high on the list but I've it really is a great record and I consider it to be a much better album than its predecessor Stay Down.
Personal favorites on this album are "Wish We Were" "College" "Punk Band" "Diary of a Teen Tragedy" and "Letter to Emily."

Get Fired
This was their first full-length album. It was released in 1993 by Johanns Face Records. It was the first album that I had ever heard by them. I picked it up at the Wax Trax Record store in Chicago.
My personal favorites on Get Fired are "Lets Hear It For Love" "Let Them Die" and "Not That Kind of Girlfriend."

Born to Quit
This one was originally released in 1994 by Johanns Face and then was re-issued by Capitol Records after they signed with them.
Personal favorites are "Rubella" "Need You Around" and "Adena."

Stay Down
Released in 2008, this was the first studio album that was released after they reunited. It was released by Curb Appeals Records.
My favorites on the album are "Welcome to Janesville" "If You Don't Care" and "Stefanie."
To be honest though, I'm really just now trying to absorb the album because when it first came out I was kind of disappointed with it.

The Partys Over
This album was released by Double Zero Records in 2001. It was supposed to be the band's last release for Capitol Records but the lable rejected it and let them out of their contract. This was the last album released before the band broke up.
It is an album of covers by artists such as Willie Nelson, Burt Bacharach and Kris Kristofferson.
I was not really a big fan of this album and I don't have any favorites on the album.

Smoking Popes: DoTM 2

I actually did do one of these back in February 2007 but I was looking at it tonight and saw how lame it was so I figured it could use an upgrade.

Top 4 Films: Ned Beatty

Happy 73rd Birthday Ned!!!

Superman (1978)
In this Richard Donner directed movie about practically the most popular super hero in comic book culture, Ned plays the henchman to Lex Luthor, Otis.
The scene of his that I will always remember is toward the end when Luthor is talking to Superman about his grand plan to restructure the west coast of the United States and while pointing at his "revised" map points to a town called Otisburg, which is written in crayon on Luthor's carefully constructed map.
Mr. Beatty reprised his role in the 1980 sequel but he was not in the movie for very long.

Back to School (1986)
Ned plays Dean David Martin in this, probably my favorite, Rodney Dangerfield flick about a rich businessman that decides to enroll in college in an effort to keep his son from dropping out.
Another interesting thing about this movie is the unexpected cameo of Kurt Vonnegut Jr as himself.

Charlie Wilsons War (2007)
A really great political film starring Tom Hanks and based on a novel of the same name by George Crile, which was published in 2003. The screenplay was written by Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote The West Wing, A Few Good Men, and The American President, other good political films (ok West Wing wasn't a film but you know what I mean). It also starred Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Ned plays Congressman Clarence 'Doc' Long (Democrat from Maryland) who at the time controlled the foreign aid budget for the House of Representatives.

Toy Story 3 (2010)
In this 3rd installment of the beloved Toy Story series, Mr. Beatty does the voice of the "villain" Lots O' Huggin' Bear.
Good film. Good cast.
I saw this one in the theater in 3-D with my son. In fact, I think this might have been the first 3-D movie I saw in the theater.

Honorable Mention
Rudy (1993). Beatty plays the title character's father, Daniel Ruettiger, Sr.

Matthew Sweet: DoTM

I got the idea to do this DoTM from Dave's Review of Sweet's Girlfriend on Sunday.

I have to admit that I am not a big fan of Matthew Sweet but I do like the albums Girlfriend and 100% Fun. I also really enjoy the covers albums that he did with Susanna Hoffs.

So a short bio. Sweet was born in October 1964 in Lincoln, Nebraska and moved to Athens, Georgia after graduating from high school. He was in a band briefly with Michael Stipe's (REM) sister Lynda while there.
