Oklahoma State Questions Part 1

This is a preliminary state questions post. The final results on what will be on the ballot have not been decided so I will be updating this throughout the election season.

Property Tax Amendment
Prevents annual increases in property taxes.

I approve of this amendment and will be voting yes on it.

Affirmative Action Ban Amendment
Bans affirmative action programs in Oklahoma. Would prohibit special treatment based on race or sex in public employment, education and contracts.

I also support passage of this amendment. I echo State Senator Rob Johnson's remarks on this amendment when he said that "...we should judge people purely on their qualifications......"

Parole Process Amendment
Removes the Oklahoma Governor from the state parole process.

I really don't have much of an opinion on this one at time point in time. Perhaps after I've done more research on the issue, I will have more to say about it.

Here are some other measures that are being proposed to be on the ballot in 2012:

Oklahoma Wine Purchase Amendment
This amendment would allow for the sale and purchase of wine in grocery stores.

I would support the passage of this amendment.

Oklahoma State Office Appointment Amendment
This amendment allows the Governor to appoint state officials such as state treasurer, labor commissioner, insurance commissioner and corporation commissioner, rather than these offices being separately elected offices.

I support passage of this amendment if it comes to that ballot as well. For one thing, it would lower the cost of elections in Oklahoma state because these offices would no long have to be voted on. These should be "cabinet-level" type positions rather than elected officials.

Personhood Amendment
This amendment would define the term "person" as beginning with conception and would essentially criminalize abortion.

Well, this should come as no surprise to any of my readers but I am pro-life and fully support this amendment. I don't think it will pass, even here in the reddest of red states.

Oklahoma Violent Video Game Tax Question
This measure places an excise tax on violent video games.

I do not support this amendment.

  1. Great post. I'm going to comment on a few of these specifically.

Property Tax Amendment: Do the property taxes automatically increase each year? If so then that is mucho bad and I will definitely be voting for this one.

Affirmative Action Ban Amendment: I'm okay with this except in the case of education. There are a lot of really smart kids in very bad situations that wouldn't get to go to college without Affirmative Action.

Parole Process Amendment: Like you, I know nothing about this.

Oklahoma Wine Purchase Amendment: I don't partake in the bubbly but I shall be voting for this. Also liquor stores should be allowed to be open on Sundays.

Oklahoma State Office Appointment Amendment: I'm not sure on this one. What you've said makes a lot of sense but I don't know enough about the offices/jobs to really have an opinion on the matter.

Personhood Amendment: I will be voting against this.

Oklahoma Violent Video Game Tax Question: This is dumb. I'll be voting against it.

  2. I commented on all of them. Whoops.
