Top 4 Films: Samuel L. Jackson

Happy 63rd Birthday Mr. Jackson!!

Samuel L. Jackson was born on this day in 1948 in Washington D.C.

Pulp Fiction
This 1994 film was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. This was a great film. Jackson played the character of Jules, the hit man with that special wallet. I remember when I first saw it in the theater with a friend of mine. The style in which the story was told was very eclectic. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for the Award for Best Picture but lost to Forrest Gump. Samuel L. Jackson himself was nominated for the Best Support Actor Oscar but lost to Martin Landau (who won for the film Ed Wood). Samuel did, however, win the Best Support Actor award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). Besides Samuel L. Jackson, this film also starred one hell of a cast that includes John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keithel, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Ving Rhames, Eric Stoltz, Christopher Walken, and Rosanna Arquette, among others. By the way, I still want to know what was in that damn briefcase!

Die Hard with a Vengeance
Jackson plays Zeus Carver plays the pawn shop owner in this 1995 John McTiernan film. I saw this third movie in the Die Hard series in the theater as well. This one, unlike the first two, takes place in New York City. I'm a fan of these films, I don't care how many of them I make. I just like the character. Bruce Willis obviously plays this role. Also appearing in the film is Jeremy Irons as the main antagonist.

Unbreakable
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and released in 2000, this superhero film (sort of) pairs Jackson and Bruce Willis together again. Jackson plays Elijah Price, the comic book art dealer and Willis plays the film's protagonist, David Dunn. The movie itself shows how super heroes could exist in the real world and Shyamalan, who also wrote the film, presents this in a great way. Ever since its release there have been talks of a sequel but the reality of that has never come to fruition unfortunately.

The Avengers
Jackson was the perfect actor to be cast in the role of Nick Fury. This film, masterfully directed and co-written by Joss Whedon was one of the best films of 2012. The rest of the cast included Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, among others.

Honorable Mentions:
The Great White Hype (1996)
A Time to Kill (1996)
The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)
Jackie Brown (1997)
The (prequel) Star Wars Trilogy (1999, 2002, 2005)
