Why An Elephant

Back in August 2009 I wrote a post titled Becoming An Elephant.

At the time I was living in Washington State and was fairly active in the GOP there.

After I moved back to Oklahoma, I got mildly active initially but ended up registering as an Independent because I was not thoroughly impressed with the GOP establishment here in Oklahoma. Something about them rubbed me the wrong way.

A few months ago, I registered (again) as a Republican. Mostly because I became somewhat active in my support of Republican Presidential nominee Ron Paul.

Lately, however, I have been going back and forth on whether or not I really want to be a part of this party. After reading Steve Dickson's post on his Capitalist Sooner blog, Why I Am Republican I began to re-visit the idea of why I myself was a Republican.

So, I decided to revisit some old political posts here on the Otter Limits. I finally came upon the aforementioned Becoming An Elephant.

First, I'll copy some highlights from that blog:

"Immediately following the [2008] election, I realized that being an Independent was truly a lesson in futility.......I realized that the entire time I remained staunchly Independent I was in fact kidding myself.

So I began a sort of political soul-search to figure out where I belonged........after much thought and discussion with members of both parties (and discussions among other fellow Independents), I decided that since I agreed with the ideals of the Republican Party more often than I disagreed with them and that I truly did feel more in tune with their conservative principles, I decided to throw my hat into the GOP ring."

So, there is one reason that I still consider myself a Republican. Because I agree with them more often than not and certainly agree with them more often than I do with the Democrats, which, to me, is a party whose only solutions to the problems of our nation have to do with spending more money, which I can not agree with.

To cite some examples of things I believe in that the GOP also believes in, here are some items from the Oklahoma GOP website and their Statement of Principles: (Which is taken from the Oklahoma GOP Platform):

"We believe in limited government...." Check
"..individual liberty..." Check
"....personal moral responsibility..." Check

One quote from the Oklahoma State GOP platform really stuck at to me for some reason:

"That government closest to the people governs best and is preferred to centralized control."

And here are some of the GOP's stance on specific issues from the National GOP website:

Health Care. We support common-sense health care reforms that would lower costs, preserve quality, end lawsuit abuse, and maintain the health care that Americans deserve. We oppose government-run health care.

Energy. We believe in energy independence......[we support] an "all of the above" approach that encourages the production of nuclear power, clean coal, natural gas, solar, wind, geothermal, hydro power, as well as offshore drilling in an environmentally responsible way. We oppose so-called cap and trade legislation that would impose a national energy tax on families and small businesses that would....raise utility prices."

Courts. Republicans believe a judge's role is to interpret the law, not make law from the bench. Judges.......should demonstrate fidelity to the U.S. Constitution."

Unlike a lot of Republicans, I am not necessarily a Republican because of any admiration or any such thing for any specific Republican President. I liked Reagan. I don't treat him as sort of a conservative demi-god though. That is, I don't worship the Presidency of Ronald Reagan like a lot of Republicans. I was definitely not a fan of George I. For that matter, I was not the hugest fan of George II, although I liked him better than his dad as President.

No, I think the reason that I remain a Republican is because, whether the old school GOP members believe it or not (or if they remember it or not), the Republican Party is a defender of liberty.

Without liberty, nothing else matters. Without liberty, there is no freedom to choose who your elected officials are. Without liberty, there is no freedom on how to raise and school your children the way you want. Without liberty, there is no freedom to choose how to live your lives. Where to live. Where to work. What to drive. What to eat. What leisure activities to engage in.

Without liberty, there is no freedom. Period.

I am a Republican because I believe in the cause of liberty and because I trust the Republican Party (yes, the party that FREED the slaves) to be the Party to further the cause of liberty.

Capitalist Sooner On Why Republican

Fellow Oklahoma blogger Capitalist Sooner has written an excellent post titled "Why I am a Republican."

He made some really good points in this post, here is just a small excerpt from it that speaks on what I like to call the stepchildren of the GOP, the Libertarians:

"While I can appreciate the attraction to not being in a political party...it is not possible in this time to effect change outside the party system........I see the Libertarian Party as our long lost GOP brothers who just need to be welcomed home properly. They are a part of us. We should reach out to them and prepare a place for them, not fight with them. We need each other to defeat the combined forces arrayed against us. Our differences are minor and agreements major. The right leadership can heal this divide and I believe unity here is coming.

I suggest you give this post, as well as his other posts a good read through.

NHL Roundup 3.26.12

Holy cow! It's been a long time since I did one of these. Guess I should keep my 2 hockey fan readers up to date since the playoffs are just around the corner.

EASTERN CONFERENCE STANDINGS

Atlantic
Rangers
Penguins
Flyers
Devils
Islanders

Northeast
Bruins
Senators
Sabres
Maple Leafs
Canadiens

Southeast
Panthers
Capitals
Jets
Lightning
Hurricanes

WESTERN CONFERENCE STANDINGS

Central
Blues
Red Wings
Predators
Blackhawks
Blue Jackets

Northwest
Canucks
Avalanche
Flames
Wild
Oilers

Pacific
Stars
Sidenote: I've been trying to figure out for a while why Dallas is considered part of the Pacific Division. I finally decided to look it up. I figured, surely they were just moved from another city that rightly belonged to the "Pacific" division. Lo and behold, the Dallas Stars were originally the.............Minnesota North Stars. So the division confusion is still on.
Coyotes
Kings
Sharks
Mighty Ducks

STATS LEADERS

Points Leaders
Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh) - 97
Steven Stamkos (Tampa Bay) - 87
Claude Giroux (Philadelphia) - 86

Goals Leaders
Stamkos (Tampa Bay) - 52
Malkin (Pittsburgh) - 46
Marian Gaborik (New York Rangers) - 37

Wins Leaders
Pekka Rinne (Nashville) - 41
Marc-Andre Fleury (Pittsburgh) - 41
Henrik Lundqvist (New York Rangers) - 35

Save Percentage Leaders
Ty Conklin (Detroit) - 1.000

ESPN NHL Power Rankings (Top 10)
Pittsburgh Penguins
St Louis Blues
New York Rangers
Nashville Predators
Vancouver Canucks
Philadelphia Flyers
Boston Bruins
Chicago Blackhawks
Detroit Red Wings
Buffalo Sabres

And so here are my personal picks for who is going to win each division/conference:

In the Atlantic Division, I believe that the Penguins will beat out the Rangers for the top spot.
In the Northeast, I'm picking the Bruins.
In the Southeast, I'll have to go with the Panthers, even though I don't like them.
Overall, in the Western Conference, I'll have to go with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In the Central Division, my money (figuratively, I don't bet on hockey) is on the Red Wings.
In the Northwest, I'm definitely picking the Canucks 4th highest points in the league!
In the Pacific, I'll have to go with the Coyotes.
Overall, in the Eastern Conference, I'm picking the Vancouver Canucks.

Finally, in the Stanley Cup finals, I'm going with the Canucks over the Stars.

Movie Review: The Hunger Games

I took my 13 year-old daughter to see this movie because she wanted to see it. I went into this movie having little expectations because I had never read the book.

I saw the trailer a while back when I went to see another movie and thought it seemed mildly interesting but didn't really plan on going to see it. Before going to see it, I had read Dave's review of it and he seemed to really like it. However, our movie tastes aren't always the same so, still no real expectations. I also read that it had made a lot of money on its opening day so apparently a lot of people liked it. However, a lot of people also liked Avatar and I did not. So again, no real expectations.

Point being, my low expectations of the movie made it a better movie.

I would not say it is one of the best movies I've ever seen, nor would I saw that, in and of itself, it was an amazing movie. It was good. That's about it.

The story was good. I really like the premise behind it. I would have liked to have known more background but I was told that the book itself didn't really go into the background much either.
Again, having not read the book, I can't say if it was better or worse than the book.

Would I watch it again? Yes.
Would I pay to see it in the theater again? No.
Am I now planning on reading the books. More than likely.

Descendents: 12 for 2012

Here is the second installment of this year's 12 for 2012 that I started last month with Weezer.

This second one is for another one of my favorite bands, the Descendents. This one was really hard to come up with because I love practically their entire catalog.

I would also like to point out that I did not include any songs from the band from their ALL years (the songs done with the singers Chad Price/Scott Reynolds/Dave Smalley instead of Milo).

So without further adieu, here are the 12 best songs recorded by the Descendents, in alphabetical order:

  1. Clean Sheets (from the album All)
  2. Coolidge (from the album All)
  3. Cool to be You (from the album Cool to be You)
  4. Get the Time (from the album Enjoy!)
  5. Good Good Things (from the album I Don't Want to Grow Up)
  6. Hope (from the album Milo Goes to College)
  7. I'm the One (from the album Everything Sucks)
  8. Merican (from the album Cool to be You)
  9. Rotting Out (from the album Everything Sucks)
  10. She Loves Me (from the album Everything Sucks)
  11. Silly Girl (from the album I Don't Want to Grow Up)
  12. When I Get Old (from the album Everything Sucks)

Too Many State Agencies

If there is any question as to why the state of Oklahoma spends too much money, one place to look is finding out why Oklahoma has so many unnecessary agencies.

The State of Oklahoma has so many agencies under its belt that can either be eliminated completely or integrated into another agency.

Here is a short list of some of those agencies:

The Capitol Complex and Centennial Commemoration Commission. This commission was responsible for funding the dome project for the state capitol. Ok, the dome is built, what do we still need these guys for?

Oklahoma Peanut Commission. This commission is tasked with promoting the production of sales of peanuts.

Used Motor Vehicle and Parts Commission. Mission Statement: "to license and regulate used motor vehicle dealers....to create an atmosphere of fair competition among equally regulated dealers and to protect the interests of the consuming public."

Oklahoma Boll Weevil Eradication Organization. No really, this is an actual state organization.

Oklahoma Funeral Board. According to their website the board acts in the public interest, for the public protection and advancement of the profession and serves as an informational resource on funeral services to the general public and members of the profession. This is made up of 7 members appointed by the Governor.

Oklahoma Board of Private Vocational Schools. This is a board the sets standards for private vocational schools including standards of instruction and training qualifications for instructors. The first problem with this agency is that they are regulating PRIVATE schools. What business does the government have in setting standards for anything private? If it is private, henceforth part of a free market system, should they not be setting their own standards. Furthermore, Oklahoma already has a Board of Education, why does there need to be a separate function for vocational schools?

These 6 are just a tip of the iceberg. Other state agencies include the Oklahoma Board of Tests, the Sheep & Wool Commission, and the Wheat Commission, among many many others.

Quote of the Day (3.2.12)

"Laws don't make people, better people....the people I know in Washington aren't capable of telling you what you ought to do...."

- - Ron Paul (during an interview with John Stewart on the Daily Show, September 26, 2011
