Soooooo... how many records have the "screeching weasels" (lol) sold compared to Zep? I'll betcha' Plant has sold more on his own than the weasels.
ReplyDeleteI would say that the comments you posted about zep could be found and posted about any and every band on the planet... Beatles - overrated, Stones - overrated, zep overrated, J Airplane- overrated, the who, Guess who, Doors, Poco, Eagles, Van Halen, AC/DC, Johnny Cash, Green Day, U2, ZZ-top, Neil Young, Boston, Styx, Journey... overrated, overrated, overrated... everything is overrated according to somebody.
The fact is.... that zep did things no other band at the time was doing... they started the high male lead singer craze that spawned AC/DC, Boston, Styx and dozens of other copycat bands... and they did it without sampling or copying someone else's style.
They are not my favorite band by any stretch... but to say they were "overrated" is an even bigger stretch.
They took rock 'n roll away from it's simple roots and helped ruin it. Boston, Styx and all the swill that followed helps to back up my point. Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley had more talent. Does selling the most records count? Oh, then Michael Jackson is your king. Incidentally, Neil Young didn't copy Led Zeppelin. He was doing his own thing. Ditto Johnny Cash, who started at the same fantastic label, Sun Records, that Elvis and Jerry Lee started on. The Doors began their own sound in 1965/66, when Led Zeppelin was the Yardbirds. Green Day owes it's sound to Punk, not to Led Zeppelin. To me, Led Zeppelin represents bloated, over-blown, stadium rock, not rock 'n roll. Punk rock brought the simple core of rock 'n roll back, which had been missing since heavy metal 'philoso-rock' tried to ruin it.

Even Keith Moon could play a large or small drum set and still create the same sound. Bonham? not quite.
As A musician, I see no way how john paul jones is the greastest bassist. His solos are boring and repetitve, he is nothing special.

And Jimmy paige was nothing truely unique. Jimi hendrix, Eric clapton, steve winwood, and Alex lifeson could kick his ass.
Robert plants screeching is nothing short of an earache. He has openly admitted he can not hit the high notes anymore, but Geddy lee can.
So, yes, to me, Led Zeppelin did not "invent" rock. They invented musical sex symbols, they plagiarized more than any other band, and are one of the most overated bands of all time. They have musical talent, but they are nothing amazing.

Kinks? Kinks sucked! And Nirvana? You talk about Zeppelin being overrated.... Nirvana was fking lame. Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam blew that pretentious dick and the rest of Nirvana away. Zeppelin was able to write in a way where they showcased a number of different styles on one album. They did it with practically every album, even their most experimental In Through the Out Door.

ReplyDeleteI have to admit though that I’m not sure how Zeppelin influenced Boston. Granted I could by wrong, but when I listen to their music I hear two very different things. Boston was a power pop band and Zeppelin at its core was a British blues band. Now I can see their influence on AC/DC, especially considering AC/DC is at its core an Australian blues band.

I threw Boston in as one of the high-pitched male vocalists... they may not fit as influence by Zeppelin, but most of which were inspired in one way or another by... Robert Plant among others... he certainly broke the door open for that style as far as I recall, I could be wrong about Boston... I just know I didn't like em... Styx either. And I didn't like AC/DC until lately and realized how talented Angus is.

Again... I'm not the biggest Zeppelin fan in the world by any stretch... I own Led Zep IV and Houses of the Holy among my diverse collection of music that spans David Allen Coe to Jefferson Airplane to Pink Floyd to Lynyrd Skynyrd to Big Head Todd and the Monsters to Tool to the Chingons to Vivaldi and lots in between... but no screeching weasel I'm afraid.
My favorite album of all-time is still the same as it was in about 1973 or so... Dark Side of the Moon.

Personally, I have only ever owned 1 L.Z. album and kept it around for a while. Tried to listen to it a few times. Just could not get into it. I really just don't like them one bit.
I don't like his singing (Plant's). I don't think Page is the god of guitar that so many make him to be. I just don't like the band.
I am, however, in response to this last comment of yours, a big Floyd fan. Dark Side of the Moon however, oddly enough, is not of my favorite album's of theirs. In fact, my favorite album of theirs is the follow up to DSOTM, Wish You Were Here.

Best rock singer? That's a good one! Outstanding guitarist? Not bad playing for a guy who shamelessly plagiarised blues riffs and hooks that had been done earlier-and better. Beatles were the quintessential boy band. Long before New Kids on the Block, Boys II Men, N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, etc.. Beatles were the trendsetters. "Boy band before boy band was cool". Other than that, most of their music was boring and their early shyte was lame bubblegum pop.

Stairway to heaven is a terribly boring song and it guitar solo really sucked, in fact jimmy page really sucked. It really pisses me off when it comes on the radio everyone obsesses over it and thinks it's "the greatest song ever written" well it really isn't. zepplin never had anything I ever liked and I always thought they were really overated.

The reason people of your age can't appreciate Zeppelin for what they REALLY were (while some may appreciate them for their SOUNDS), people my age actually understood why they were so important.
The Beatles were to afraid to go over the edge. They would step up real close and look over and say "Nah" and turn around and walk away. Zeppelin jumped, with a smile on their face. They crossed the line, with innuendos and strange screams, echo, mass distortion. Jimmy Page invented shredding. Robert Plant helped along the very small amount of falsetto male singers at the time, John Bonham is ranked as the number 1 rock drummer of all time, and JPJ was just cool in essence while innovating new methods that Pink Floyd utilized themselves. Take Pink Floyd's "Money" and slow it down about half a second and tell me that couldn't be a Zeppelin song.
You don't understand what you're talking about obviously. If you did, you would realize your falsity. Zeppelin invented a DECADE. Their style, music, hair, beliefs, strange interests. It all helped shape the 70's. Whether you dislike their sound or not, you shouldn't discredit their talent or their actual influence on the world, which was to much for you to imagine.
And if your favorite album is Dark Side of The Moon, then I truly don't think you have room to talk, talk about an awful band, AND an awful album. At least Led Zeppelin didn't have 8 minute intros into a 7 minute song. HA.
I for one grew up in the seventies (born in 1960). I first liked Led Zeppelin when I was about eleven years old, in 1971. But by the latter half of the decade, I grew tired of long drum solos and guitar riffs the sounded more and more "intellectual" (Yes/King Crimson/Pink Floyd etc.). I wanted the fast, danceable rock 'n roll that I remembered hearing on the radio as a kid. So when PUNK came on the scene, I was ready as a sixteen year old to embrace it. I thought it pretty much slammed hippie rock and Led Zeppelin for the overproduced, boring music it was. To this day, the music of the Ramones, X, DEVO, the Sex Pistols, B-52's---to name a few---sound much more fresh and alive, more like the original spirit of rock 'n roll from 1955-1965, before it grew into "poetry" and had to have "meaning" in all the songs. Give me an up-tempo Little Richard song or "Beat on the Brat" by the Ramones any day over a Led Zeppelin tune. It's no contest!

I think the Small Faces actually started the high male lead singer thing. Plant certainly copped Stevie's style ( listen to You Need Love on Youtube ). In fact JP wanted Steve Marriot to sing. Not to mention the Jeff Beck Group was a LOT like LZ, stylistically and otherwise. LZ's greatness was the sum of it's parts. JPJ and Bonham were rock solid, brilliant, who cares if Bonham was "the best drummer ever". Add Plant's andro stage prescense and Joplin like vocals and Jimmy's visionary playing and producing and you have a band that def does NOT suck! One of my faves. But not really that original, it's what they did with the template.

Maybe it's because I like other rock 'n roll that is played faster, like rockabilly and punk. I find most seventies rock to be overproduced and kind of a chore to listen to, and it's my generation's music. I was supposed to like it. But I don't.
DeleteThere is not a single way in which this band sucks. Each of the members of the band were incredible and their respective instruments. Jimmy Page is an awesome, and my favorite, guitarist who is incredibly versatile playing slide, shredding, playing with a violin bow, in different tunings, as well as multiple generes like blues rock folk, funk (The Crunge) and even a little rockabilly tune (Hot Dog) which is awesome. John Paul Jones played multiple instruments and mastered each of them, and even incorporated Chopin during his live improve on piano in No Quarter (30 min long live at seatle). John Bonhams is a beast on the drums, Moby Dick speaks for itself, and Plant was a great lyricist. I don't find any of their songs are boring and how can they be overrated if they all can create and play such incredible music?

I am a girl. Some (drunken) douche took a swing at me once for saying Kansas was my favorite band. On another occasion something similar happened when I said Metallica was better than Zeppelin (the person in question was slamming Metallica for selling out- I wasn't arguing on that, I agree, but then they went on about Led Zeppelin, which brought about).
In that instance I had a beer can thrown at me. This isn't to say that any fanbase doesn't have these sort of egotistical jerks who react violently to any sort of criticism towards their brand, experience has just told me some are worse than others. That extends beyond music as well, into sports, movies, television, videogames, books, so on.
But in terms of music I can't think of any musical group outside of boy bands and their legions of crazed teenage girls be as given to as much zeal and contempt as Zeppelin fanatics.
Totally turns me off.

ReplyDeleteZeppelin definitely did plagiarize some of their songs-- especially early in their career. They are a-holes for claiming to be the writers of songs like "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," "Bring It On Home," and "Dazed and Confused"-- which are clearly rip offs of other artists. That being said, later in their career they did write many, many great songs that are completely their own, from "Ramble On," "Out On the Tiles," and "Over The Hills and Far Away," to "Kashmir," "Ten Years Gone," "Achilles Last Stand," and "Fool In The Rain." In my opinion Zep still deserve to be considered one of the great bands of history for all the wonderful original tunes they did-- but, at the same time, also deserve to be knocked down a few pegs for the blatant plagiarism that they've never really taken responsibility for.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion but led zeppelin rocked and is one of my favorites I can get how people don't like them truth is they are a specialized band designed to appeal to a certain crowd but that crowd was tremendous thus the record sales. Some people like pop while others like rock or progressive rock or rap or metal or blues based rock but this band was exceptionally good at what it did and people are supposed to create music from previous ones it isnt necessarily copying but a form of skill and art. So just because you like thrash metal like metallica means you are a fan of the genre. While pink Floyd are different huge fan by the way do don't criticize these bands since they are what influence the artists you listen to today. By the way rolling stone rated jimmy page 3rd greatest guitarist of all time and John bonham a 1st greatest drummer and he is the biggest influence for today's drummers

ReplyDeleteEverybody takes something from someone else and re-invents it themselves. There are SO many riffs that sound similar in a ton of different songs. Led Zeppelin added a blues feel to rock SO, they might off took some shit from blues and incorporated it into rock music. There are only so many chords you can play and riffs. I swear now a days people are running out of ideas and are copying shit I've heard a million times already. Led Zeppelin was one of the greatest bands ever in my opinion and everyone has their opinion. I was influenced by John Bonham to start playing drums he is a fantastic drummer. I could see how Plant's singing could get on some peoples nerves though. Bascially, all I'm trying to say is....Led Zeppelin improved rock and roll by adding different genres into it. Plus, John Bonham is one of the best drummers ever end of story.

ReplyDeleteI liked them when I was about 13 years old..a whole lot. Man,what powerful songs. I needed that then I guess. After I reached into my twentys I started to truly love the Blues, then I realized what Led Zeppelin did. They did what a lot of other British and American bands were doing, listening to great American Blues artists like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson etc... And selling it back to white teens and white kids like me. While perhaps they did do me and many others the service of exposing us to the blues in a way we were ready to handle(along with the Stones, ZZ Top, Henrix..you can add on) they never at their peak let on to what it was they were doing or gave creds to the real artists..in fact they were straight up ripping them off in several cases and in spirit for the most part. Now I know. You know, I don't blame them for playing the stuff or putting it on acid so to speak (acid rock...yep) the blues are and were great(and timeless) and they knew it too. But they really should have been spreading the word about what they were listening to and helping those artists..not just ripping it off and letting dummys like me think how great they were. Perhaps they regret it too. Funny now I think of them as some sort of cover band. I think of a lot of rock that way though.Zeppelin was far from alone in the bilking of the blues. But many including the Rolling Stones were honest about their heroes and what they were doing.

Jon Anderson sings tenor, naturally high voice, never falsetto, straight from the diaphragm, he is still singing gigs solo today soon to put together a band with a very famous violin player. Robert Plant sings falsetto, completely in the throat, when he isn't he is a bass tenor at best, I haven't heard anything new from him.
Steve Howe to Jimmy Page: Steve Howe composes circles around Page, who plays very sloppy, missing notes while high on drugs. Steve Howe was never high on anything, he respects his body and is a strict vegetarian. He is still touring with Yes and his playing is spectacular. Jimmy Page would be silenced forever if he had to copy anything Steve wrote.
Rick Wakeman to John Paul Jones.....There is no comparison, none at all. Rick Wakeman will go down in history with Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and other timeless composers just listen to the six wives of Henry the 8th. Yes, no comparison at all
Chris Squire to John Paul Jones. Chris squire is touring now in 2014. He has influenced Steve Harris. Enough said.
Bill Bruford to John Bonham. Bill Bruford also very straight, level headed jazz influenced drummer, never wasted or on drugs during a show John Bonhem could neverplay anything by Bruford there is just no way he could play such presision with those tree trunk sticks. Bill Bruford was definetly one of the best drummers on earth but he is now retired which is better than dead from partying too hard, so let us compare Alan White who has a different style more hard rock he is still playing and currently on tour with Yes which again is better than dead in a grave from being too wasted.
The first 6 albums by Yes are better than the first 6 by Zep, also Yes continued to play through the 80s, 90s, 00s, & 10s. Zeppelin died with their drummer early 80s. Maybe they can not play or they will get sued, their song stealing has caught up with them. Also none of Yes was screwing a 13 year old child like Jimmy Page was.......just saying.

The real measure of what makes a legendary band is their impact on music, which is not subjective. Led Zeppelin and specifically Jimmy Page's inventive and improvisational producing has made a major impact on the bands and artists that have followed them, whether they know it or not. This and only this is the measure of a band's/musician's impact on music. Liking or disliking is irrelevant. Same goes for The Beatles, Elvis, Mozart, etc. Some musicians come along and change music, which is why people discuss their music for 20, 30, 50 or hundreds of years.

I don't really like classic rock in general because pretty much every classic rock artist is an arrogant, bigoted, sexist, racist, homophobic, and all-around horrible piece-of-garbage excuse for a human being; and it really shows in their "music". There really isn't anything "classic" or memorable or good about "classic" rock anyway. It's just bad music that people are nostalgia-blind for. It pretty much all objectively sucks. I much prefer REAL "classic" rock music like Elvis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, The Monkees, etc. At least those guys had some talent!

I have found a lot of people on music forums who hate or don't like Led Zeppelin even some on heavy metal forums. And even some people who for some puzzling reason like their music,say they can't stand Robert Plant's awful screeching,screaming and whaling vocals.

In 1995 Rhino Records published I, Caramba, the autobiography of legendary rock critic, musician, and graphic artist John Mendelssohn.The book came nicely packaged with a CD compilation featuring solo demo material and several tracks from two of his bands - the Pits and Christopher Milk.
