Another Casting Crowns Video

The song "If We Are the Body" is the first song I ever heard from the band Casting Crowns.
This is not an "official" video for this song but dang this is a good video for it and it really nails the song in my opinion.

And here are the lyrics to the song (I wonder if I am violating some sort of copyright law by doing this?):

It's crowded in worship today
As she slips in
Trying to fade into the faces
The girls' teasing laughter is carrying farther than they know
Farther than they know

But if we are the Body
Why aren't His arms reaching
Why aren't His hands healing
Why aren't His words teaching
And if we are the Body
Why aren't His feet going
Why is His love not showing them there is a way
There is a way

A traveler is far away from home
He sheds his coat
And quietly sinks into the back row
The weight of their judgmental glances tells him that his chances
Are better out on the road

But if we are the Body
Why aren't His arms reaching
Why aren't His hands healing
Why aren't His words teaching
And if we are the Body
Why aren't His feet going
Why is His love not showing them there is a way

Jesus paid much too high a price
For us to pick and choose who should come
And we are the Body of Christ

If we are the body
Why aren't His arms reaching
Why aren't His hands healing
Why aren't His words teaching
And if we are the body
Why aren't His feet going
Why is His love not showing them there is a way

Jesus is the way

What This World Needs

Before you read this, read my last post. That is, read the lyrics to and watch the video for the song "What This World Needs" by Casting Crowns..........

Now that you have read that and if you watched the video there is a spoken word part toward the middle of it. These are the words to that. I think it hits the nail right on the head in my opinion.

People are not confused by the Gospel. They're confused by us.
Jesus is the only way to God but we are not the only way to Jesus.
This world doesn't need my tie, my hoodie, my denomination, or my translation of the Bible.
They just need Jesus.
We can be passionate about what we believe but we can't strap ourselves to the Gospels because we're slowing it down.
Jesus is going to save the world but maybe the best thing we can do is just get out of the way.

Just thought I would share this with you.

A Casting Crown video

Ok, I did the Discography of the Moment on these guys so now how about a video of them?

Here are the lyrics to this song:
What this world needs is not another one hit wonder with an axe to grind.
Another two bit politician peddling lies. Another 3-ring circus society.
What this world needs is not another sign waving super saint that's better than you.
Another ear pleasing candy man afraid of the truth. Another prophet in an Armani suit.
What this world needs is a Savior who will rescue. A Spirit who will lead. A Father who will love them in their time of need
A Savior who will rescue. A Father who will love. That's what this world needs.
What this world needs is for us to care more about the inside than the outside.
Have we become so blind that we can't see God's gotta change her heart before He changes her shirt.
What this world needs is for us to stop hiding behind our relevance. Blending in so well that people can't see the difference and it's the difference that sets the world free.
What this world needs is a Savior who will rescue. A Spirit who will lead. A Father who will love them in their time of need.
A Savior who will rescue. A Father who will love. That's what this world needs.
Jesus is our Savior, that's what this world needs. Father's arms around you, that's what this world needs. That's what this world needs.

Another Allular List

This post is an update of the post Ranking the Descendents/All that I posted back in March 2009.

On that post I listed my favorite albums from the Descendents and ALL, independently. On this list, I am ranking them in order of preference AND combining albums released under both the Descendents and ALL monikers.

I am not, however, including any live albums or compilation albums in this list.

  1. Everything Sucks - Descendents (1996)
  2. Pummel - All (1995)
  3. Mass Nerder - All (1998)
  4. Cool To Be You - Descendents (2004)
  5. Breaking Things - All (1993)
  6. Problematic - All (2000)
  7. Enjoy! - Descendents (1986)
  8. 'Merican - Descendents (2004)
  9. Milo Goes To College - Descendents (1982)
  10. I Don't Want to Grow Up - Descendents (1985)
  11. Allroy for Prez - All (1988)
  12. All - Descendents (1987)
  13. Percolater - All (1992)
  14. Allroy's Revenge - All (1989)
  15. Allroy Sez - All (1988)
  16. Allroy Saves - All (1990)
  17. Bonus Fat - Descendents (1985)
Hey Dave! Am I missing anything on this list?

An Allular List

Okay, so I have done an Essential Descendents/ALL list. I have done a post Ranking the albums of the Descendents/ALL. I have done a post listing the Top 9 ALL/Descendents Songs (although I separated the song between the Descendents and ALL). And I have done a post listing my favorite song on each album.

You would think that I have no more Descendents/ALL lists in me....but of course, you would be wrong.

This next list was a huge undertaking.

This is a list of my Top 11 Descendents/ALL songs. The difference between this and my previously posted Top 9 list is that this is a list of favorite songs combining the two "bands." Another big difference between the two (and the real reason this post was such a difficult task) is that it is actually listed in order of preference. That is, the #1 song on the list is my #1 favorite song of theirs, #2 is my 2nd favorite song of theirs, and so on....

So without any further introductions, here it is the Top 11 Favorite Descendents/ALL songs!

1. She's My Ex
ALL - Allroy's Revenge
Released in 1989
Written by Bill Stevenson
Sung by Scott Reynolds
The album Allroy's Revenge was All's 1st album with Scott Reynolds.
This song was also released on the live album Live Plus One and on the 1999 self-titled greatest hits album.

The album Pummel was the band's first and only release on a major label for the band. The label was Interscope.
This song was also released on the live album Live Plus One and the 1999 self-titled greatest hits album.

4. Refrain
ALL - Mass Nerder
Released in 1998
Written and sung by Chad Price

5. 'Merican

Released in 1985
Written by Bill Stevenson
Sung by Milo Aukerman
On the album I Don't Want to Grow Up, 2 guitar players were present on various songs. The song "Silly Girl" was played by Ray Cooper.
On a more personal note, the song "Silly Girl" is one of the first Descendents songs that I heard and have since always been one of my favorites.
This song was also released on the live albums Liveage and Live Plus One.

9. Hope
Descendents - Milo Goes to College

John Lennon: DOTM

The only albums I am including that were released after his death are the ones with new music, that is, songs that were not previously released on other albums.

  1. Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins - November 1968.
  2. Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions - May 1969.
  3. Wedding Album - November 1969.
  4. Live Peace in Toronto - December 1969.
  5. John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band - December 1970.
  6. Imagine - September 1971.
  7. Some Time in New York City - June 1972.

  9. Walls and Bridge - October 1974.
  10. Rock 'n' Roll - February 1975.
  11. Shaved Fish - October 1975.
  12. Double Fantasy - November 1980.
  13. Milk and Honey - January 1984. *
  14. Menlove Ave - November 1986. **

* Recorded during and after the Double Fantasy sessions.
** Recorded during the Walls & Bridges and Rock 'n' Roll sessions.

Here is the compilation I would put together of Lennon's best solo material:

Mother (from John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band)
Working Class Hero (from John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band)
Imagine (from Imagine)
Jealous Guy (from Imagine)
Just Like Starting Over (from Double Fantasy)
Woman (from Double Fantasy)
Borrowed Time (from Milk and Honey)

Looking back at this list, it is kind of unfortunate to realize that Lennon did not really make much good post-Beatles music. And come to think of it, his best work was in colloboration with Paul McCartney.

Paul McCartney: DOTM

  2. Ram - May 1971.

Stephen Egerton Interview

While I am on the subject of All/Descendents, I wanted to go ahead and post this interview I did a while back with the guitar player for both bands, Stephen Egerton. In my opinion, this guy is just amazing and one of the best guitar players out there (in any genre). The guy really has a great sense of rhythm and really knows how to work a song out on the guitar. Just an amazing talent!

So here is the interview:

What prompted you to originally start playing music and guitar specifically?

I was a music fanatic from the beginning of my life. Including pounding my head on the floor along with my parent's records... which explains a lot.

Do you have any specific musical influences?

The Beatles were played a lot in my house when I was growing up, and they're definitely my first major influence. The Beatles, Black Flag, The Sex Pistols, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra are my favorite bands.

What type of music did you listen to growing up?

A lot of 50's and 60's rock and roll as a kid, and a little jazz. My mother had good taste in music, and I grew up with a great variety. When I was 11, a neighbor lent me Frank Zappa's "Absolutely Free" which sparked my interest in "unusual" music... opening the door for punk rock.

What type of music are you listening to currently?

Lately, I'm listening to very melodic music, old and new. Simon and Garfunkel, Fiona Apple, Pernice Brothers, The Beatles (always), and I'm checking out a lot of 90's music I hadn't heard before. I'm looking for new things to listen to.

How did you originally hook up with the guys from the Descendents?

Karl Alvarez (ALL/Descendents bassist) and I grew up together. We knew Bill a little bit from shows we did with Black Flag. When Doug Carrion and Ray Cooper left, Bill called Karl, and Karl let me know they needed a guitarist too. It made sense for us to join together, since we'd played together for so long. We had been huge fans of the Descendents, so you can imagine how great it was for us to get to play with them.

Aside from ALL and the Descendents what other side projects are you currently working on?

I play with an instrumental band called Slorder. We released an EP a while ago, and will probably record more soon. I've also got a big stockpile of songs I'm not sure what to do with. I write all the time, and I play drums and bass, so I've recorded them, but haven't figured out what to do with them from there. Occasionally I post a few on MySpace. I also played drums on a great record for a Tulsa band called John Moreland and the Black Gold Band. They have a permanent drummer now, but that was a lot of fun.

What do you prefer more, recording or touring?

I like recording more than touring. Touring is fun, and I like the challenge of live shows, but I like the idea of the music being more "permanent".

What type of guitars and amps do you favor?

I play Music Man guitars. I've got a couple of older Gibson guitars as well. I have several different amps for different things. Satellite, Sound City, Crate, etc.

What are your personal favorite ALL and Descendents albums and why?

Favorite ALL record is Problematic. Bill, Karl, and Chad kick major ass on that record. For the Descendents, it's Everything Sux. It was a really fun record to make. (Otter's Note: On a personal note, Everything Sux is my favorite Descendents record as well.)

Do you have a particular song that is your favorite?

I have several I'm really fond of. Thank You, Rotting Out, Carry...

What prompted your move to Tulsa, Oklahoma?

My wife's family lives here, and I wanted my kids to be close to them. It's also really inexpensive here.

How much of an effect does your location have on how often you get together with your various music projects?

A really big effect. Almost all of my collaboration with other musicians is over the Internet. Slorder makes their way down once in a while, but most music I do is by myself these days.

How and why did you get involved in owning your own recording studio?

I've been recording bands for many years, and had a large hand in building our studio in Colorado (The Blasting Room). Since my main work is recording these days, I set up a studio after I moved here.

How many different band's albums have you produced?

Probably 30 or so bands, and more than 50 projects over the last bunch of years.

Do you have a personal favorite band that you like to work with as far as recording goes?

Not really. For the most part, I really love recording. I enjoy working on music that's outside my usual style, and I get along pretty well with people for the most part, so I can always find a way to get into a recording project. Recently I've been recording a band called John Moreland and the Black Gold Band, who's music I really love. If you really get into the music, recording is an awesome thing to do.

Do you have any favorite movies? Favorite books?

I'm not as much of a reader as I should be. I go through phases where I watch a lot of movies. I like Seven, Fight Club, all the Pixar movies, the first 3 Star Wars movies. Cheesy stuff that doesn't make me think too hard. I'm not much for comedies, because I'm not funny.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry? How do you feel about music going almost completely digital?

The music industry appears to be in an awful state. I don't know what to think anymore. I'm comfortable with music being digital, but it's sad that along with that comes the breakdown of the industry. It means that touring is the main means for a musician can support themselves, as recording is more often than not a losing proposition financially. It means that very few musicians can eek out a living unless they're touring, which means that a lot of great music is overlooked, or not able to be heard.

What is next on the horizon for All? The Descendents? Any other side projects you have going on?

I think ALL will continue to do occasional shows, and I'd like to think we could record more in the future. As far as Descendents, touring is out of the question, but I'm hopefully for a few more shows, and maybe a record. My projects these days are my own stuff, which I'm sorting out what to do with, as well as Slorder... which is an instrumental band... and eventually Scott Reynolds and I would like to finish recording our 40Engine record. As long as I've got a place to record, I'll keep putting stuff out.

Any final thoughts?

Thanks for stopping by!

ALL Songs Sung By Milo

My good friend Dave (from Oklahoma Lefty) talked about this post a few days ago and we decided that we would both do one. It looks like he beat me to the punch over at his blog.

So basically this post entails the songs originally done by the band ALL that I would like to hear Milo (Aukerman - Descendents) sing if I ever got the chance to see them live.

Dave has a pretty good list over at his site and mine is not as extensive but here is my list nonetheless:

Just Perfect (from 1988's Allroy Sez)
Skin Deep (from 1988's Allroy for Prez)
She's My Ex (from 1989's Allroy's Revenge)
Minute (from 1992's Percolater)
Million Bucks (from 1995's Pummel)
Think the World (from 1998's Mass Nerder)*
Honey Peeps (from 1998's Mass Nerder)*
Refrain (from 1998's Mass Nerder)*
Until Then (from 1998's Mass Nerder)*
Carry You (from 2000's Problematic)
Better Than That (from 2000's Problematic)

* The reason for the star next to the songs on this album (Mass Nerder) is that I just wanted to make a comment about this album. In my opinion this album really should have been a Descendents album. Milo actually does some backing vocals on this album and in fact The Descendents actually wrong and recorded a song titled "Mass Nerder" on their album Cool To Be You.

This post was intended for those readers of mine that are big Descendents/All geeks. You know who you are. LoL!

Here are some videos I tracked down of them:

Beatlemania 2009 Part Two!

Yesterday, I briefly mentioned the release of a new Beatles box set. Here is a bit of information about it.

It was released on September 9 and includes their entire back catalog digitally remastered. It includes stereo editions of all 12 studio albums.

It was released the same day (on purpose I am sure) as the released of The Beatles Rock Band video game.

As a bonus, the box set includes a DVD that includes narratives from each of the Beatles and long-time producer George Martin, giving their thoughts on each album. Also included on the DVD are some television appearances, footage of recording sessions, and other material from their films (Hard Days Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine and Let It Be).

30 Minutes

Do you know that if a foreign country launched a nuclear missile at our country it would only take approximately 30 minutes to reach its target?

Countries such as North Korea and Iran are attempting to build their nuclear stockpile. Russia and China already have the capability to threaten our country and our allies.

Our government's PRIMARY responsibility is to provide for our country's defense and this includes protecting it from a nuclear missile attack. For every hostile country that gains nuclear weapons capabilities, our country should increase its capabilities for missile defense technology.

Thus far, our government has failed to implement any type of missile defense shield, even though our enemies are continuing to build their nuclear weapons capabilities.

Iran, for example, will most likely have the ability to launch a nuclear weapon against us or our allies within the year. As another example, the nuclear-grade weapons that North Korea is testing will soon be able to carry a nuclear warhead as far as Alaska or California.

Does this scare you? It does me.

As thinly spread out as our conventional military forces are now, in addition to other reasons, it is simply not practical for our country to attempt any sort of invasion of these countries and thus far our attempts at economic sanctions has proved unsuccessful at getting them to end their efforts to gain nuclear weapons.

The only chance we have is to improve and continue to fund missile defense technology.

Otherwise, we can kiss our butts goodbye if one of these countries decides to launch their missiles at us.

30 minutes it takes.

What Would You Do?

This blog post is going to get extremely personal.

Some of you that read my blog regularly I have spoken to on a more personal basis and you might know some of this, most of you I am sure do not.

Nevertheless, I have been quiet about this for quite some time and it has gotten to a point that I can be quiet about it no more.

A few years ago, June 2006 specifically, the family and I had just moved to Oklahoma City from the Seattle area. We had not yet even gotten settled into the house we moved into. One early morning in June (very early, like 3 or 4 in the morning) my wife Jesica woke up in terrible pain. She was in so much pain that we woke the kids up, got everybody dressed and headed into the emergency room, where they initially just pumped her up with pain killers while they tried to figure things out.
After running several tests they had determined that a cyst on her ovary had ruptured and they had to do emergency surgery to get it all out. So they took her into the operating room, where they ultimately had to remove the entire ovary itself.

A few days later, however, after running pathology on the ovary and cyst, we got the news that it was not a cyst after all. This thing that had ruptured was indeed a cancerous tumor. They ran more tests to try and determine if there was anymore in there. They were unable to find any.

She was assigned to a doctor at the University Medical Center's cancer division. We saw him a couple of times but Jesica was not very comfortable with him. He did not seem to have much of a personality in my opinion. Problem was that for her type of cancer, there were only about 3 doctors in the state. They did, however, find her another doctor that she was a little more satisfied with.

The next year, almost to the day as when we first found the cancer, Jesica, at the suggestion of the oncologist, had a full hysterectomy done in order to prevent the spread of anymore cancer. During the surgery, they did some searching around and determined that there was no more cancer but would continue running tests for another month just to make sure.

In July of 2007, we were given the all clear. There was no more cancer. Or so they thought.

After that we led a life in Oklahoma (for the most part) free of stress.

But January rolled around and she began having pains in her abdomen. Not terrible pain but pain nonetheless. She even went on a trip by herself with the kids to visit her mother and her new nephew while I stayed behind.

Come February the pain got worse so we called her oncologist, expecting the worst. And the worst came. The cancer was back. Another surgery to remove the cancer was performed and after the 6 week recovery period they began chemotherapy.

After one regiment of chemo, the doctors determined that it was not working and decided that they would start her on a new one. This was also right about the time we were having problems with our mortgage company (see How to Lose a House).
At this point, with so much going on and how much stress was going on at the time, we decided to pack up and move back to Washington. If we were going to have to deal with cancer and chemotherapy treatments, we needed to do it somewhere that we had a better support base.

So once in Washington, we ended up taking her to one of the best cancer hospitals in the nation, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, where they ran some more tests and went over all of the medical records that had been sent to them from Oklahoma. The doctor (who I have to say was, is and has been one of the best doctors we have dealt with during all of this) told us that the cancer was gone as far as she could tell and there was no need to continue chemotherapy treatments. Awesome. Or so they thought...again.

This was in July of 2008. October rolls around and guess who came back. That's right. The cancer came back. Another surgery. Another 6 week recovery period and more chemotherapy treatments after that.

Since that time, we have been on a roller coaster of emotion and of stress and of news.

The doctor all along has been convinced that she and Jesica were going to beat this cancer but as time went on, and multiple treatments attempted, we all became less and less optimistic that this cancer was going to go away.

Fast forward to about a month ago. Jesica was having some more pain. Keep in mind at this time we already knew that there was more cancer in her body but the attempts to remove surgically had ceased (this was decided because they did not want to further expose the cancer to open air and risk it spreading further). She went in to have some tests run and of course, there was more cancer. Also keep in mind that this visit took place in between chemo treatments. She was still in the middle of treatment, and the cancer not only was not going away but new ones (a bigger one even) were growing.

At this point, the doctor gave us the bad news that there really was nothing more that they could do and the doctor herself told Jesica to start putting her affairs in order. So this was a little shocking. Had they given up? Was there seriously nothing else that could be done?

They had decided to try one more type of chemotherapy but informed us not to get our hopes up about it because this type of chemo has time and time again proven ineffective against Jesica's type of cancer.

Ah, that reminds me, let me rewind a bit to talk about the type of cancer Jesica has. I am not going to even attempt to try to pronounce the biological names of this type of cancer and I might be a little off on the specific details and some of the numbers I will mention here but this gives you an idea of what we were up against.

First of all, ovarian cancer is rare anyway. Of all of the types of cancer that there are out there, ovarian cancer might show up in, let's say about 8-10% of the cases. On top of that, ovarian cancer does not normally show up in people at such a young age as Jesica is so we are already looking at Jesica's cancer as being closer to a 6-7% (if that high) range of all ovarian cancer.

So when they tested this cancer, they initially told us it was a type of cancer that I will call Cancer X. In all of the cases of ovarian cancer that have been found, Cancer X only showed up in 5% of the cases. So we were dealing with a rare form of a rare form of cancer.
However, after looking at it more, studying it, researching it, they determined that it was only biologically built like Cancer X. In other words, it physically looked like Cancer X. But they realized that it more closely resembled a type we will call Cancer Y.
Cancer Y itself only shows up in about 0.5% of all ovarian cancer cases. Great, even more rate than we originally thought.
Ah, but wait, it gets better.
Because it was biologically built like Cancer X but performed and was showed the aggressive nature of Cancer Y, that it was actually Cancer Z, a type that they have NEVER seen before!

So essentially, the doctors are dealing in what we can basically call guess work. They have no idea what they are up against. But these are smart doctors, I am not trying to belittle their intelligence or what they know. Just making a point that they are dealing with a rare situation.

In any case, they are trying this new type of cancer that they are about 99% sure is not going to work. Best case scenario with this chemo is that it will help manage her pain but easing some of the pressure that one of the tumors is putting on her internal organs.

So a few weeks went by after we got the news that there really was nothing more that can be done and were told to get her affairs in order. At that point, we really had no idea how long Jesica would still be with us.

Well, that question was answered for us just recently. This past Wednesday Jesica went to see her doctor to get a lot of questions answered and maybe determine if there were any other steps that might possibly be taken.

The bad news is that there really truly is not anything else that can be done. All options have been exhausted, save this "pain management" chemo.

But that isn't it. There is more bad news. We were informed that due to the nature and aggressiveness of the tumors, it is unlikely that Jesica will live past 6 months.

(Long sigh)

6 months.

What do you do when you are told your wife is going to be done within 6 months?

What do you do when you realize that in 6 months you are going to be the single father of 3 kids? An 11 year old girl. A 5 year old boy that just started kindergarten. And a 3 year old girl that was only 5 months old when the cancer was first diagnosed and has known nothing of a healthy mother.

What do you do with the knowledge that sooner than later you have to start making funeral plans?

What do you do?

Well, if you ever figure out that answer to that question, would you mind letting me know because I don't have a clue what to do with this information.

I am going to be blunt about this. I am, for lack of a better way to put it, terrified for what lies ahead.

I am, to be quite honest, a little co-dependent. Sometimes I do like to be left alone in my thoughts and to have some peace and quiet to be able to read and that sort of thing. But truthfully, I can't really function all that well without someone else around. The only time I have truly ever lived on my own, that is, lived by myself with nobody else in the house, apartment, dorm, whatever, was the last 2 years I spent in Alaska when I was in the military.

The fact that I am going to be losing somebody that for all intents and purposes has taken care of me for the last 8 years of my life, and the fact that I am ultimately going to be responsible for taking care of myself now, is frightening.

The fact that I am going to have to raise 3 little ones (1 of which will be a teenage girl soon) practically by myself is pretty scary.

Well, that is about all I have to say about it for now. I really just wanted to get this stuff off my chest because I felt like I have been silent about it long enough.

But I do have to ask. What would YOU do with this information?

Old Music Reviews

I recently got an e-mail stating that my website on GeoCities was going to be de-activated because GeoCities in general was shutting down.

At first, I ignored it because I have not updated the thing in a really long time and did not really care if any of the stuff on there disappeared. Besides, a lot of it I have already transferred to other websites, blogs, etc. anyway.

However, I decided to head over to the site and check it out just to make sure there wasn't something on there that might need to be saved somehow.

So I found on the Music page of the website some old concert reviews that I had done so I thought I would post those here.

They are listed in reverse chronological order.

Saturday, January 13, 2001. The Medicine Hall, Norman, Oklahoma
Same Day Service

This time around the show went off much better than the last one I saw with them. The music was good last time around, they just kept having equipment failures of some sort. Not this time though, everything went off pretty good. There were some opening bands, I listened to bits and piece of their sets but was unimpressed so I kept leaving the venue and hung out outside the building waiting for SDS to start up. So Same Day Service came on a little late, a lot of the kids had to leave because of a curfew, so unfortunately the place thinned out a bit. Anyway, the music still sounded really good. This apparently was their last show in Oklahoma before moving off to Austin Texas. I can't say I blame them, a band like this shouldn't have to live in such a cultural armpit of a state like Oklahoma. As far as I'm concerned they are one of the very few local bands worth listening to. And now they're leaving so the pot dwindles down even more. I wish them the best of luck in their new surroundings, hopefully they'll find what they're looking for. Their new CD will be out soon also by the way.

Sunday, October 29, 2000. Music Dimensions, Oklahoma City
Bratmobile w/ Same Day Service

Even though this show seemed to have a few problems as far as the bands went, it still turned out to be a pretty good show. To begin with, the show started much later than it was supposed to because both of the bands were running behind. Ok, so Same Day Service started off, and they were having some equipment problems, mostly the guitar player. Their music, however was pretty good. Probably a good idea to check these girls out again. So when Bratmobile finally showed up, their set, although a really good set, was muddled with problems from the beginning. First off, everyone in the band was either sick, hungover from the previous day, or both. The singer had apparently all but lost her voice. The guitarist had a migraine and/or was hungover and the drummer had a cold. In addition, the vocal mike was cutting out all night which seemed to be really irritating the singer. Anyway, even though each band had their own little problems with their sets, they overcome all those obstacles and played a really good show.

Glam-Fest 2000 - Poison/Cinderella/Dokken/Slaughter

I know you're probably wondering why I am doing a review on a butt-rock show. Well, I went to this show and believe it or not, I had a good time. We showed up a little late and fortunately, we missed most of Slaughter's set. So, not much to say about them except that it was really funny seeing the singer wearing tiger print spandex. Dokken was actually pretty good, other than the fact that it really wasn't the same without George Lynch. I spent a good portion of their set talking to my friends about the show. We were wondering why Winger didn't end up on this bill and during Dokken's set, it dawned on me, the guitar player from Winger is now in THIS band! How strange, no wonder the songs sounded watered down. The next band was Cinderella, I never really liked this band to begin with, so I wasn't too impressed with them here either. Poison, however, I'm not too sure how I feel about saying this, but, I actually thought they put on a good show. And even worse, you may think, I have seen this band 3 times now. I can't figure out why I keep going to these shows to tell you the truth. Maybe I never got that one butt-rock chromosome out of my system. Well anyway, they put on a decent show. The music was, well, Poison so you figure out if that's good or bad. All in all, my experience in the Land of the Cheese was entertaining and I don't regret going.

Pulpit Red

First off, lemme tell you, I was really psyched for this show. I haven't been able to see this band in so long. Ever since coming back from Florida, they've played a few times, but I kept missing them for whatever reason, the show was cancelled, I had to work that night, or I found out about it after the fact. So, here I was, finally about to see Pulpit Red, who I consider probably the best band in Oklahoma City. Seconds into their opening number "Telephone Girl" I knew that it would be well worth the wait. This band was just great, as they always are. Why this band isn't more popular than they are I will never understand. Their set is so full of energy and chock full of great songs, you just can't help but get into these guys. I was really glad that I was fortunate enough to finally catch these guys again and I just can't say enough good things about them so why bother? Anything I write probably wouldn't do them the justice they truly deserve anyway. Bottom line, Pulpit Red, just flat rocks. Most of the bands in this city could learn a thing or two about rock and roll from these guys.

Dick Dale
Well, what can you really say about Dick Dale, I mean, come on, he's the King of surf guitar. He was great, as was expected. There were a few bands that opened up for him, the first one I think was called the Poison Okies, the music was ok but it was nothing special, nothing really noteworthy. They play like rockabilly-style originals. (At least, I think they were originals). The next band I forgot their name, but it's all for the better because I really didn't care for them. The bass player was playing one of those 1980s BC Rich Warlock basses, so she had that going for her. As for the rest of the band, they really weren't that great. They didn't suck, they just weren't that great. The next band, I don't remember their name and I don't remember what they sounded like because for most of their set I was outside listening to tapes of a local band. I didn't really have any desire to listen to them cuz they didn't seem all that special to begin with. Anyway, on to Dick Dale. He was simply amazing. He ripped through a set of what apparently was his just winging it. He told the crowd that he really doesn't remember how to play most of his songs, he remembers the basics of it, and than just feeds off the audience to play the rest of it. Whatever the case, it was really cool. He played his old standard Miserlou of course. I'm willing to be that it was the only song in the set that most of the crowd knew. Surprisingly enough, there were more young people in the crowd (young being, not old enough to drink) than there were people that might have actually heard his stuff when it first came out back in the 60s. He also played some newer stuff that is supposedly coming out on a new CD here in the next few months. Bottom line, he definitely lived up to his title. Dick Dale IS the King of the Surf Guitar, no question.

Misfits

Well, this was the first show of the millennium that I went to see and I must say it was well worth it. I have never seen this band before and I was glad to have seen them. There were two opening bands, one of which was good, one of which was really bad. The first band, Subsanity, are a group of guys that I have known for a good many years. They're music is somewhere between grind core and punk. They're a really good band and have been together for a really long time. Everything about their show was good, good sound, they were tight, new music sounded good. All in all, a good band to go see live if you ever get the chance. The second band however...flat out sucked. They sounded like Korn. And if you don't know me, I hate Korn. All that adidas rock is just a waste of airtime. I just really don't understand it. It may be good for somebody but I really don't like it. So this band, called Element, I really didn't like. So much in fact, that I spent their entire set, drinking beer and heckling them. At least I amused some of the people in the crowd so the people that did hate them joined along with me and were well entertained during their set. However, there were a few people in the crowd that were not too happy about me leading a crowd of hecklers. Anyway, bottom line, Element sucked. No need to go any further with that. Misfits, on the other hand, were great. For anyone that continues to say that the new Misfits are no good and refuse to listen to them, they don't know what they are missing. I personally like the new Misfits, of course it's not the same but who cares, there are a good number of bands that have changed their singers and still been a good band. They played mostly new stuff, opening up with Forbidden Zone, off the new album Famous Monsters. But they also played to the old schoolers with some of the older Misfts tunes, namely, Mommy Can I go Out and Kill Tonight, Die Die My Darling, I Turned into a Martian, among many others. The new singer, Michael Graves, definitely does justice to the old songs previously sung by Glenn Danzig. In fact, more so than a lot of people that have tried to sing Misfits songs. Anyway, their show was definitely worth the wait to see them. My only regret of the night is not having met Doyle, the guitar player, after the show. I did, however, meet Jerry Only, the bass player, and the drummer Dr. Chud. Pretty cool guys. You must see this band live at some point in your life.

Friday, Sept 3. Club Downunder, Tallahassee
June of 44 and 3 Second Kiss

Well, what can I say about this show? We traveled about 2 hours both ways to Florida State University in Tallahassee. What a waste of driving time and gas that was. At least the cover was only 5 bucks. Both bands essentially sucked. June of 44 had potential but whoever was running sound for them needed to be shot. Everything they played was covered up by the fact that the sound was mixed horribly. As for 3 Second Kiss, they just simply blew. They were some artsy-fartsy emo-core band of some sort. Their drummer seemed to be into their set though. Although he played basically the same beat the entire time, his head was bobbing away and he looked like he was just really into it. The guitarist played the same notes over and over. It just sounded like crap. Not much else to say. Definitely a couple of must-see bands!
