Top 3 Films: Ed Harris
Happy 60th Birthday Ed!
Just Cause (1995)
This film was based on a novel of the same name written by John Katzenbach (who also wrote the book the movie Hart's War was based on).
It is about an anti-death sentence college law professor that investigates the murder of a young girl in Florida to help try to get her alleged murderer off of death row.
In addition to Harris, it stars Sean Connery, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Capshaw, Blair Underwood and Ned Beatty.
Harris plays Blair Sullivan, a serial killer awaiting execution.
The Rock (1996)
This film was directed by Michael Bay (Bad Boys, Armageddon, Mystery Men, Transformers, etc..) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, etc...).
It is about a group of Marines that take over Alcatraz Island and essentially hold the San Francisco Bay area hostage to blackmail money out of the government.
It stars Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, William Forsythe, and Michael Biehn. Harris stars as General Francis Hummel, the leader of the rogue Marines.
Enemy at the Gates (2001)
This movie is partially based on a book written by William Craig titled Enemy at the Gates: That Battle for Stalingrad.
It is about 2 snipers, one Russian, one German that hunt each other throughout the film.
Harris plays the German sniper, Erwin Konig. The Russian sniper, Vassili Zaitsev, is played by Jude Law.
It also stars Joseph Fiennes, Ron Perlman and Bob Hoskins, who plays future Soviet premier Nikita Krushchev.
This was a really hard list to put together. Ed Harris has done a lot of great films. Here is just a partial list of some of his other great films:
The Right Stuff (1983)
Sweet Dreams (1985)
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
The Firm (1993)
Needful Things (1993)
Apollo 13 (1995)

Week 11 Scores
1. Saints beat the Seahawks 34-19. :( Well, at least Seattle wasn't completely slaughtered like when....
2. The Vikings lost to the Packers 31-3.
3. Colts lost to the Patriots 31-28. :) Way to go Pats!
4. Chiefs beat the Cardinals 31-13. :)
5. Eagles beat the Giants 27-17. :) Always good to see the Giants lose. Almost as good as watching the Colts lose.
6. Bills beat the Bengals 49-31.
7. Cowboys beat the Lions 35-19. What's up with that?!? The Cowboys win 2 in a row? Oh, it's just the Lions, never mind.
8. Redskins beat the Titans 19-16.
9. Jets barely beat the Texans 30-27.
10. Steelers destroy the Raiders 35-3. :( Not a sad face because I like the Raiders but because I really don't like the Steelers. Then again, they were only playing the Raiders, nothing to jump up and down about.
11. Ravens beat the Panthers 37-13. No big surprise there.
12. Jaguars beat the Browns 24-20.
13. Falcons beat the Rams 34-17.

15. Bears shut out the Dolphins 16-0.

Top 3 Films: Terry Gilliam
Happy 70th Terry!
Terry is best known for 2 things: (1) being the only member of the Monty Python troupe that was not born in Great Britain, and (2) being a great director. This list is not a list of the best movies he has acted in but a list of what I think are the best movies that have had him as their director.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Terry actually co-directed this movie with fellow Python member Terry Jones.
This movie was actually not based on sketches from their TV series, as were previous Python movies. It is basically a spoof of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the titular Grail.
Besides directing this film, Terry also starred in it as Patsy (King Arthur's assistant), the Bridgekeeper, and the Green Knight. It also stars Graham Chapman as King Arthur, John Cleese as Sir Lancelot, Eric Idle as Sir Robin, Terry Jones as Sir Bedevere, and Michael Palin as Sir Galahad.
12 Monkeys (1995)
This is one of my favorite time-travel based movies. It is loosely based on a short film produced in 1962 titled La Jetee (or The Pier).
It is about a convict in a post-apocalyptic future that travels in time to help figure out what caused a world-wide pandemic that forced the entire remaining population of the Earth underground.
It stars Bruce Willis as James Cole (the convict), Madeleine Stowe as Dr Kathryn Railly, a psychiatrist from the present-time (not the future) that gets kidnapped by James Cole, Brad Pitt as Jeffrey, an inmate of a mental facility in the present that James Cole ends up in, and Christopher Plummer, as Dr Goines, the father of Jeffrey.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
This film was based on Hunter S. Thompson's novel of the same name.
It stars Johnny Depp as Raoul Duke and Benecio Del Toro as Dr. Gonzo. It also has cameos by Tobey Maguire, Ellen Barkin, Christian Ricci, Gary Busey, Mark Harmon, Cameron Diaz, Lyle Lovett, Flea, and Harry Dean Stanton.

Barenaked Ladies: DoTM
The Barenaked Ladies (BNL) are a band that formed in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario (a town outside Toronto, Canada).
I am not necessarily a giant fan of their work and only really started listening to a few of their songs because they wrote and perform the theme song to the show Big Bang Theory, which I only recently started watching.

For me, it's probably a little too early in the season still to start making any predictions but if I had to take a guess based on what I have seen so far here is what I would go with:
Eastern Conference Predictions
In the Atlantic Division, the Penguins will take it.
Boston will take the Northeast Division.
Washington will win the Southeast Division.
In the end, I think Washington will win overall in the Eastern Conference.
Western Conference Predictions
In the Central Division, I think the defending champions the Chicago Blackhawks will take it.
Vancouver will dominate the Northwest Division.
The Pacific Division will be won by Los Angeles.
In the end, I think Chicago will be defending their Stanley Cup title against Washington.
Only time will tell.
Until the next time........enjoy!!!
Top 3 Films: Danny DeVito
Happy 66th Danny!
Batman Returns (1992)
Certainly not my favorite Batman film and with even more certainty not my favorite Batman villain, but DeVito as the Penguin just seemed to work in my opinion. Strangely, I liked Burgess Meredith in the TV show in the role better but for the movie and the vision that Burton had for his film franchise, DeVito did a great job in the role.
Also starring in this 2nd installment of the Burton/Schumacher franchise was Michael Keaton in his last appearance as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and Christopher Walken as businessman Max Shreck. Paul Reubens did a cameo as the father of The Penguin (aka Oswald Cobblepot).
DeVito even got a nomination for Best Movie Villain at the MTV Movie Awards. He lost to Jennifer Jason Leigh in Single White Female.
Hoffa (1992)
Another one of my favorite biopics, this one is about the famous missing person, the Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa, who was played brilliantly by Jack Nicholson.
DeVito actually directed this film and the character that he played, Bobby Ciaro, is actually a fictional character based on several people in Hoffa's life.
Also starring in this film are J.T. Walsh as Frank Fitzsimmons, the man that took over the Teamsters when Hoffa went to jail, Armand Assante, and John C. Reilly.
Renaissance Man (1994)
In this film directed by Penny Marshall (Big, A League of Their Own, TVs Laverne from Laverne and Shirley), DeVito plays Bill Rago, an unemployed advertising executive that finds himself teaching English to a group of U.S. Army recruits.
It also stars Gregory Hines as the group's drill sergeant and Mark Wahlberg as Pvt. Tommy Lee Haywood.

NFL Roundup 2010 (Week 10)

1. Seahawks beat the Cardinals 36-18. :)
2. Patriots beat the Steelers 39-26. :)
3. Chiefs lose to the Broncos 49-29. :(
4. Bills beat the Lioins 14-12.
5. Vikings lose to the Bears 27-13.
6. Jets beat the Browns 26-20. The only thing that surprises me about this score is that the Jets didn't score more than 26 points.
7. Colts beat the Bengals 23-17. :( The sad face isn't because I like the Bengals, I just don't like to see the Colts win.
8. Dolphins beat the Titans 29-17. I was actually a bit surprised to see this happen.
9. Buccaneers beat the Panthers 31-16.
10. Jaguars beat the Texans 31-24.
11. In the biggest surprise of them all in Week 10....the Dallas Cowboys actually pull off a win against the Giants 33-20. I am willing to bet that the Giants are hanging their heads in shame right about now.
12. The 49ers beat the Rams 23-20.
13. Falcons beat the Ravens 26-21.
14. On Monday night, the Eagles defeated the Redskins 59-28.

Back in September, I made my predictions on the post about Week 3. That was obviously a bit premature so here are my new picks for this season's winners.
In the NFC East, I think Philadelphia will win.
Green Bay will still win the NFC North.
In the NFC South, defending champs New Orleans will stay on top.
Seattle will take the NFC West.
Although, it will be really close, the Jets will take the AFC East.
Baltimore will take the AFC North.
The AFC South will be won ultimately (and unfortunately) by Indianapolis.
Kansas City will take the AFC West.
In the end, I think the Philadelphia Eagles will take the NFC championship while the New York Jets will take the AFC.
If I have to guess between those two, I would put my money (if I were a gambling man) on the Jets.
Top 3 Films: Beverly D'Angelo
Happy 59th Beverly!
National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
This Harold Ramis-directed film was the one that started the franchise. Personally I think it is the best one of the Vacation series.
Beverly of course plays the matriarch of the Griswold family, Ellen Griswold.
The films also stars (as if you didn't know) Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, Anthony Michael Hall in a very early role as Rusty, Randy Quaid as Cousin Eddie, John Candy, Christie Brinkley, Brian Doyle-Murray, and Eugune Levy.
It spawned the sequels European Vacation in 1985, Christmas Vacation in 1989, Vegas Vacation in 1997, the made for TV Christmas Vacation 2 in 2003, and the short films Hotel Hell Vacation in 2010.
Lightning Jack (1994)
This western film was written, produced and starred Crocodile Dundee's Paul Hogan as the title character.
Beverly plays Jack's "girlfriend." Also starring in it was Cuba Gooding Jr.
American History X (1998)
In this amazing film, Beverly plays Doris, the mother of the main characters Derek, played of course by Edward Norton and Danny, played by Edward Furlong.

The polls have closed and the votes are counted (not that it was very hard to count them).
The winner of the Best On-Screen Superman is........
Christopher Reeves with 46% of the votes.
2nd place goes to Tom Welling with 30% and 3rd place goes to George Reeves with 23%.
Brandon Roth and Dean Cain both received no votes.
Top 3 Films: Wallace Shawn
The Princess Bride (1987)This classic Rob Reiner directed film was based on a book by William Goldman.
Shawn plays Vizzini, the mastermind behind the kidnapping of the princess.
It also stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Christohper Guest, Andre the Giant, Peter Falk, Fred Savage, Billy Crystal, and Carol Kane.
Toy Story (1995)
The first ever Disney/Pixar film.
Shawn does the voice of Rex the dinosaur.
The other actors that lent their voices to this film were Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Don Rickles, Jim Varney, John Ratzenberger, Annie Potts, Lauri Metcalf and R. Lee Ermey.
This film, of course, spawned 2 sequels.
The Incredibles (2004)
Another voice-only role for Shawn as Gilbert Huph, Bob Parr's boss in the insurance company.
Other voices in this film include Craig T Nelson as Bob Parr/Mr Incredible, Holly Hunter as Helen Parr/Elastigirl, Jason Lee as Buddy Pine/Syndrome, and Samuel L Jackson as Lucius Best/Frozone.
I would love to see a sequel to this one.

Top 3 Films: Robert Patrick
Happy 52nd Robert!
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
This is the first role I remember seeing him in and I still think it is his best role.
In this sequel to 1984 sci-fi hit, Robert plays the more advanced terminator, the T-1000.
It was directed by (like the original) James Cameron and also stars Arnold Schwarzenegger (of course), Linda Hamilton, and Edward Furlong.
The Faculty (1998)
This high school sci-fi film was directed by Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn, Spy Kids, Sin City....)
In addition to Robert, who stars as the school's coach, it also stars Josh Harnett, Elijah Wood, Salma Hayek, Jon Stewart and Christopher McDonald.
Walk the Line (2005)
Robert plays Ray Cash, the father of Johnny Cash in this amazing biopic about the early days of Johnny.

Top 3 Films: Matthew McConaughey
Happy 41st Matthew!
A Time to Kill (1996)
This film, directed by Joel Schumacher, is based on a John Grisham novel about a father that murders his daughter's rapists.
Matthew stars as defense attorney Jake Brigance. Also starring in this film are Sandra Bullock as a law student, Samuel L Jackson as Carl Lee Hailey (the father), Kevin Spacey as the prosecuting attorney, Oliver Platt, Charles S Dutton, Ashley Judd, Keifer Sutherland, and Donald Sutherland.
Reign of Fire (2002)
I love this film. It is set in the distant future in London, in a time where dragons rule the world.
Besides Matthew, who stars as the American Denton Van Zan, it also stars Christian Bale and Gerard Butler.
There should be a sequel to this film.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
Not really usually into these type of movies but this one was pretty good.
Matthew co-stars with Kate Hudson in this film.
It was directed by Donald Petrie who is the same guy that directed Mystic Pizza, Grumpy Old Men, Miss Congeniality and Welcome to Mooseport.

New Poll: Best On-Screen Superman
Surprised that this new poll has nothing to do with politics? Yeah, you should be. What the heck am I doing posting a poll about Superman the day before the mid-term election? Perhaps to get our minds off it for a little while. If you people don't know how you are going to vote by now, God help you. LoL!Anyway, this poll is to find out who you all think who has portrayed Superman the best on screen.
The choices are:
Happy voting!!!
CD Review: The Dissent of Man
I have been listening to Bad Religion for quite a few years. I think I first started listening to them around the early 90s when the No Control album came out. Great album by the way.I have come to expect quite a bit from this band as they have released some really really great albums. Suffer, No Control, Generator, and Stranger Than Fiction to name a few.
So the fact that I expect so much of this band does not make it easy for me to review one of their albums and to write a review on it.
So I'm not going to lie. When I first listened to The Dissent of Man, I have to say that I was not impressed. In fact, I was a little angry about the quality of the songs on the album. I began to wonder whether or not Bad Religion's music had gone downhill and wonder whether or not they had reached their peak several years ago.
It also made me a little upset because I remember that their previous album, New Maps of Hell, was really less than impressive and after multiple listenings, I still only like two songs from it: "New Dark Ages" and "Dearly Beloved." Kind of sad. So here I am thinking. Great. Two stinkers in a row. Maybe it is time to just quit relying on the boys to make quality albums anymore.
However, then I remembered back around 2002 when I first heard the album The Process of Belief. I really actually hated that album at first. But after subsequent listenings it began to grow on me.
So with that in mind, I started listening to it a few more times and I think it is safe to say that this album too will grow on me.
I think it is also safe to say (with the exception of New Maps of Hell) that Bad Religion just does not put out bad albums (oh yeah, I was not a big fan of The Empire Strikes First either come to think of it).
Aside from those, Bad Religion has consistently been putting out the same great music for 30 years. The only difference being that their songwriting chops have gotten progressively better, as has their production quality.
The Dissent of Man was released on September 24, 2010 by Epitaph, the record label that the band themselves started so many years ago. It was recorded between May and June 2010 and produced by Joe Barresi, who has also produced such bands as Melvins, Fu Manchu, and Pennywise. He also produced Bad Religion's previous album New Maps of Hell. The band lineup, which consists of Greg Graffin on vocals, Brett Gurewitz on guitar, Brian Baker on guitar, Greg Hetson on guitar, Jay Bentley on bass and Brooks Wackerman on drums, has remained consistent now for 4 albums.
Highlights of this album for me are "Only Rain" "Pride and the Pallor" "Wont Somebody" and "Ad Hominem."
Definitely worth at least checking out but if have never listened to their music before now, start with something like Stranger Than Fiction or Recipe for Hate first.
Enjoy!
The Failure of Capitalism?
So here is a question I would like to post to all of you Otter Limits readers.
Has capitalism in our country failed? Has the free market economy more or less begun to implode on itself?
I have been thinking of some things lately that have made me start to wonder whether or not capitalism truly is the best economic system on which to base our country.
First, you have to wonder....is capitalism is a moral and just system?
In order to answer that question, let us think about it in this way. If Jesus were living in our times, would He condone capitalism? If you answer to that question is yes, here is another question. If Jesus would condone it why does He say in the Gospels, "blessed are the poor, woe to the poor" and "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." How do these quotes from Christ Himself coincide with the apparent greed and power-grabbing that is not only allowed but is actually encouraged in a capitalist society?
Aside from its moral implications, there are other questions worth asking. Questions such as....
Why is that the person that held the office of Secretary of the Treasury during the bailouts of the financial industry is a former CEO of the global banking firm Goldman-Sachs, which stood to benefit quite a bit from those bailouts?
Why is it in a society such as ours that is supposed to be democratic, is it the money and those controlling the money, instead of the will of the people, who control our elected officials and the decisions made at the highest levels of our government?
For instance, why is it that even though an extremely large majority of the people of the United States opposed the idea, a large portion of the taxpayer's money has been freely given to the financial industry, the automobile industry and the mortgage industry?
Also, why is it that the upper 1% of the population makes the decision for the bottom 99%?
Is this capitalism or is it feudalism?
Just in case you didn't know, feudalism was a system that flourished in the Middle Ages where the system of government was kind of like a pyramid. The king sat at the top of the pyramid and was basically the head of state. Under him were the various lords, who really controlled everything. They were the owners of the land and their vassals (indentured servants basically) were given the right to farm the land for their service by either giving the lord a portion of the fruits of their labors or by serving them in military combat.
Are we seeing perhaps an end to the middle class and the emergence of a two-class system: the have it alls and the have nothings?
Why, or how, is it that some people, particular corporate CEOs, are receiving salaries numbering in the tens of millions of dollars while others can not find decent paying jobs in order to support their families, or have to work 2 or 3 jobs in order to stay afloat in order to keep from getting forced out of their homes by the mortgage companies that their taxes just helped bailout.
Maybe the question I should be asking is not whether capitalism has failed but perhaps is it capitalism in and of itself that has created this elimination of the middle class or is it the rise of the corporation that has led to the failure of capitalism?
Is capitalism in theory a really good and fair economic system but in practice, because it has been left unchecked, has been left something to be desired.
Perhaps capitalism has not failed by itself. That is, perhaps capitalism is not the symptom of the problem. Maybe it is just the greed of corporate America.
Perhaps it is the fault of our elected officials whose political campaigns and careers are significantly funded by corporate America so they have a vested interest in allowing it to run free, without any type of meaningful regulation. They want to keep their jobs and are so addicted to their power that they have basically taken the lease off the dog.
Our Presidents, our U.S. Senators, our Congressmen, even our state and local legislators have been bought and paid for, which is indicative to me that they are just as greedy as corporate America itself. This shows me that they, like capitalism, just might have failed this country as well. They have failed the people and they have failed future generations because of their own greed.
Then again, is our current economic system really capitalism anymore? When the government of the United States has to keep the banking industry, the mortgage industry and the auto industry from going bankrupt, I don't think that is capitalism. That falls closer in line with state controlled industry, which, of course, is socialism.
Last night, I was watching this documentary and my wife, noticing my mood during the film beginning to shift asked me,
"Is this movie pissing you off?"
Me: "Yes"
Her: Does it make you hate America?
Me: "Absolutely not, but it does make me hate our government and kind of hate capitalism too."
Her: "What's the difference between America and our government?"
What's the difference?
America is not the government. America is not a particular economic system like capitalism. Corporate America is definitely not America.
America is people. People committed to freedom. People working hard to support their families. People voicing their opinions by voting in elections and making their voice heard to their elected officials.
America is 'We the People' standing up for what they believe in.
So I guess the point I am getting at here is whether or not capitalism is American. That is, does America = capitalism and vice versa?
I don't think so. I don't think the U.S. Constitution set up a specific economic system that the country had to follow in order to be a democracy.
But, then again, what are our other options?
Communism? Where the means of production and distribution are controlled by the public at large and there is no private property. Well, bits and pieces of that idea are good in theory but have never succeeded in reality. And the very idea of even uttering the word communism in this country would get you shot.
Socialism? The government controlling it all? Heck no. They can't even get mail service to run correctly, besides all of the other failures government controlled entities have had. Socialism is definitely not the way to go.
Are there any other options?
Another option is distributism, where the means of productions are spread equally among everyone. This is a type of system that ensures that everyone owns some sort of productive property. In some ways this appears to be sort of a hybrid of capitalism and socialism. The difference being that in a socialist state no individual actually owns any property.
It seems to me in a way that this was the original intent of the idea of capitalism, where all of the means of distribution and production are owned privately. The problem with it, as I have stated above is that the rise of large corporations has undermined that thought of everyone owning a piece of the pie.
The idea that only some people should be the owners of property and means of production and distribution while others are the workers and own next to nothing, save maybe a television set and some pieces of furniture is not only a bad idea but, in my own personal opinion, highly immoral.
To me that is not the American way. I don't think the forefathers intended for there to be such a wide margin between the rich and the poor. I don't think they intended for large corporations to control the country. But they do. And for the time being, it seems like there is no end in sight for that to continue unless those of us with voting power make it known that this is unacceptable.
With that in mind, to conclude here and to answer my own question.......
Yes, I think capitalism has failed.
